Oh pffftttt. I get why y'all don't like it, but I find variations on the theme of Alice to be interesting. BF has actually become a baby Alice scholar, and he made the observation that Burton's Alice (the character, I mean) is probably the closest in spirit to Lewis Carroll's original. I tend to agree with him. People have done enough weird sh*t with the character in the past 150 years (including icky stuff) that Burton's slightly creepy, mad/genius interpretation of the whole thing does NOT offend me.

UGH. Ok, no offense, Snow collectors, but this is so unfair. You have 3 marquees now!!! Meanwhile, I'm still over here waiting for the day they'll finally get around to Hunchback of Notre Dame... sure, they can squander their enamel on marquees for instantly forgotten flops like Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Wild Hogs, and freakin' Gnomeo & Juliet, but I can't get one measly Hunchback pin???

And how many Mr. Toad marquees are there? I'll give everyone a hint, it rhymes with "beer-o". And what about Emperor's New Groove? Unless you count the Villains Tonight one...

For what it's worth, there are no "Lilo & Stitch" marquees either. Meega naala kristaa!

While I didn't care for the first Burton "AiW" movie, I really liked "Through the Looking Glass". It had a good theme about time not being our enemy.

Now, I'm preparing myself for a major flame war here, but...

"Gnomeo & Juliet" = rip off of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" and that's bad, but "Lion King" = rip off of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and that's OK???

Let the flames commence!

I was just saying elsewhere Frollo gets very little villain love and he is one of the most realistic and problematic villains there is. Plus, he’s got one of the best villain songs!

Seriously, though, the world will always need more Hunchback pins. We should have gotten a marquee (or at least something-- anything-- for the 20th anniversary in 2016 but NOOOO...... Surprised to hear that there's no Lilo and Stitch marquee though, that's super weird.

So much SASS in one thread. I love reading it.

Crawling in as a fellow Hunchback collector to agree with NutMeg! God help the outcasts, give us a marqueeeee

Gnomeo and Juliet isn't a rip off it's a retelling. If anyone is butt hurt maybe they should go be butt hurt over idk....snow white, sleeping beauty, Cinderella, frozen, princess and the frog, beauty and the beast, little mermaid, any of the Alice in wonderland and movies, Aladdin, and omg I mean they stole Pocahontas' history right out of 5he history books!

I like Tim Burton (mostly his earlier work), but imho he was totally off the mark with taking this super surreal, abstract, non-linear story - pretty much the textbook example of the literary nonsense genre - and stuffing it with soooo much structure and plotting. And a plot regarding political drama, of all things. I'm also just generally not a fan of the whole "chosen one prophecy" trope. And I wish they had built actual sets for Wonderland (sorry, UNDERland) instead of shooting everything on green screen. But you know what, I'm not a huge Alice in Wonderland fanatic (not that I dislike it, it's just not something I'm emotionally attached to.) You are obviously more of an authority on Alice than me, and if you enjoyed Burton's take, then there must be something to it. You should post in Merlin's Movie Challenge thread when we get to Alice and share more of your views on the adaptation. :)

I don't think either are "rip-offs." Adaptations are fine. I'm cool with adapting Shakespeare, or any existing works, as long as it's, you know... good. Plus I think Lion King was really original for its time and took a lot of risks, while Gnomeo & Juliet was stale and borrowed A TON from other, better animated films, like Toy Story, Up, and Shrek (curse Shrek for bringing about this endless scourge of snarky, self-referential animated films overstuffed with pop culture jokes...) Also, the Elton John songs actually contributed to the story of LK and weren't just randomly shoehorned in like with G&J (is Elton John a huge Shakespeare fan or something? Why is he involved with every animated adaptation of the Bard??)

That's crazy that there's no Lilo & Stitch marquee either, though. Ok, I guess you can cut in front of me in line, too...

GUUUURL. Do not even get me started on how underrated Frollo is. We would be here all day. But yeah, he is totally the most realistic villain ever, which makes him so much more disturbing. And Hellfire is THE villain jam.

Let's be real, no history books were used for the making of Pocahontas...

Lol oh God, now I'm gonna have Gnomeo & Juliet fans AND Poca fans coming for me... seriously guys, don't be offended, you can like whatever you like! I'm not judging you. (Ok, I'm judging you a little... I'm a film student, what do you want from me?? Of course I'm snobby about movies.) I like plenty of trash too though. No shame. Own your trash, girlfriends. More power to you. <3

(Although I still think Hunchback is eleventy jillion times better than Gnomeo & Juliet and is infinitely more deserving of a marquee, and I will fight to the death anyone who disagrees. Just sayin'. Also, we don't have any Hunch PTN's either. Again, just sayin'.)

We would need to sit down at at Epcot, get some Grand Mariner slushees by France and spend all day on him! He’s the personification of some serious Catholic Guilt.

Also HoND related, I’ve been thinking about reading the actual novel though it is quite different.

Gratuitous Frollo love:

I love me some completely fictional Pocahontas! I own that trash! Also love the sound track. Fight me. ;-)

Poca’s tiny pin board is on my wall while Aurora’s huge one sits on the floor by the end of my bed, since I have to move wall decorations to even think about getting it up!

Plus I think Lion King was really original for its time and took a lot of risks

Except for the part where it may have been heavily inspired by Kimba, the White Lion. :)

I'm not saying that it was, but I am saying:

A.) It wouldn't be the first time someone's tried to rip off anime/manga and pass it off as their own idea in the West
B.) Unconscious stealing is a thing that happens- it could have been deep in their memories when they were coming up with the idea.
C.) Several people on the film remember and referenced Kimba, even if it wasn't the "inspiration" for the movie

Counterpoint: I also know that coincidences and parallel thinking happens to writers and artists all the time. I've had it happen to me...had an idea, and boom, someone else beat me to it. So I don't approve of just assuming it's ripped off because they're similar. That said, it's important to investigate claims of plagiarism, always.

But even if it wasn't original in concept or design, it was still a great movie. Kids that grew up with it are definitely making it popular again...

And I have no opinion on Gnomeo & Juliet...haven't seen it. :D

Oh I was being way more sarcastic lol

But no Disney movie is original

I'm in. He is honestly one of the most fascinating characters Disney has ever created. And I actually much prefer the Disney version to the original novel. The whole point of the book was to garner support for the restoration of Notre Dame/the historical preservation of architecture in general, which it definitely helped accomplish, but that just isn't as relevant today as the sociological themes that the Disney film explores (oppression, justice, religious extremism, etc...) Again, we could be here all day ha, but I strongly disagree with the people who complain that Disney butchered the book; I think their changes were totally justified and really interesting. (Except for the gargoyles. Those damn gargoyles...)

Also super jelly of that WDI profile!!!

Honey, you're talking to someone who owns a replica of Anastasia's "Together in Paris" necklace and wears it every damn day... zero judgment here. That movie is the most historically inaccurate thing ever and is downright offensive in its royal apologist whitewashing of the Russian revolution and it is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THING EVER OMG. I think it's totally fine to enjoy problematic media as long as you're honest about the problematic elements, ya know?

I mean, I've watched Kimba. The only real similarities are the rhyming names (and Simba means "lion" in Swahili, so that gets a pass imo), the fact that the dad dies (but this is handled in totally different ways, and LK takes that plot point from Hamlet anyway), and I guess that one shot of a lion standing on a cliff, which may have been lifted from Kimba, sure, but Disney definitely did their own thing with it (and like you said, it might have been unintentional; maybe one of the filmmakers saw Kimba when they were a little kid and that image was subconsciously ingrained in their memory.) So yeah, I personally don't think those plagiarism complaints hold much water. I think the film definitely took some major risks, as evidenced by all the animators who tried to jump ship and work on Pocahontas instead, because they thought LK would be a huge flop. Now if we wanna talk plagiarism, Aladdin and The Thief & The Cobbler, on the other hand...

Anastasia is one of my all time favorite movies. Have you heard about the Anastasia musical? The backdrop of the musical is the Russian Revolution (only slightly less historically inaccurate than the movie).

I love my historically inaccurate movies, Pocahontas is still one of my favorite films (and I'm an American historian)
