2018 Pin Releases
I really hope no one is desperate enough to pay these prices...

I love how this le 1500 park pin is going to the same prices as the lower wdi Clusters.

In recent weeks, I have become an ardent believer that evilbay prices are crock for a pin less than 6 months old. A pin's value is not determined by its recent sold listings. And that goes for inflation and deflation.

[not really meaning to start a conversation on this topic here in this thread. But I'm happy to sidebar it.]

That's the interesting thing about supply / demand. There is a group of pin traders out there that know the DSSH / WDI pins are out of their reach that they don't even attempt to get them. But a LE1500 park pin feels a lot more "attainable" so more people actively search for it. More pins actually go into permanent collections and effectively "disappear." So you have greater demand (more people looking), and less supply (think housing...there are millions of homes, but the supply that matters is not how many exist but how many are actually for sale). That's the situation can drive prices higher. And there have been popular higher edition pins before...any of the LE1000 WDW surprise pins from the early days - Wet Paint, Mickey for President, etc. The Disneyland Dream pins were super hot, until the overruns showed up, and most recently the 60th diamonds.

But the "crock" part is this is all happening one day after release. Most of the pins likely aren't in permanent collections yet, so there should be plenty of supply for the number of people who actually want to own the pin. But tell that to the speculators...

This is really what I'm getting at. There's no reason for these pins to spike in such a way so immediately after their release when there are still tons swapping hands.

I've also noticed a subtle change in pin people (mostly on social media) in that certain pins are becoming status symbols. So it's no longer "Look at my collection! Isn't it impressive?" it's "Look at this pin (singular). Don't you want it, just like everyone else?"

This, in turn, drives up "the hype" so people who don't even plan to keep the pins as part of a collection are scrambling for them so they're not left behind in the pin plebian sector.

I've noticed that too, kinda foolish to think of pieces of metal like that, huh?

This happens to a lot of fandoms though, sad to see this trend starting to creep into pin trading. :/

Oh yes, it's any any fandom. The great Amiibo Bubble is a prime example. Hahah!

But the connection between this shift and social media is something that's made me reconsider in what ways I engage this hobby.

I was thinking about deleting my IG all together. Especially since some of the "biggest" pin people put DPF in such a bad light.

And I'll say this, too, then be done with the topic here in the 2018 release thread. XD

The status symbol some pins are becoming suggests that we are just one step away from it being used as a means to qualify and disqualify people's collections. "Oh, you collect Ariel? Do you have the WDI profile? No? Hrm, not much of a collection then, huh."

Which is one step away from pay-to-play. "If you want to be a ~real~ Ariel collector, you're going to need this pin. I've got it for sale for $650. I'd say that's worth being a ~real~ collector."

Starting? It has ALWAYS been there. ALWAYS. I think it's the primary reason that most people give up pin trading. We go through this life cycle where people complain about the nastiness and then the groups separate, a smaller group gets formed somewhere, it grows, then nastiness, repeat. When Dizpins went away and people were left scrambling and this forum got formed people were lauding how nice it was to see the direction pin trading was going, as people were trading just to trade. Then several years in, there were a lot of blow ups and a bunch of people ran off to Facebook (mostly precipitated by the air that seemed to be around that if you weren't collecting Tangled, your collection was crap), and now it's going around again.

Just be grateful you missed the whole period around Pinpics graded pins, and some of the other dustups over the years.

I definitely don't need at $650 pin to think of myself as a "real" Ariel collector. That's how I feel most people see my collection, because I don't want any Gomes or the BT. My #3 that I traded for a while back would be risible in some pin groups, but I think it's the 3rd prettiest pin in existence.

I also see a lot of people that have come into pin trading the past 5 years or so that want to make up for lost time and buy whatever they can at whatever price. They're also the fastest to pull the "your pin is a fake" trigger. I never used to have that problem, but now I've had it happen to my sister on a WDI pin I bought for her at Destination D. I had to find the reciept for my sister while she was trying to placate the buyer. I just hope it doesn't get so bad that all the experienced pin traders up and leave. Their collections collecting dust in an attic.

Agreed there are status symbol pin traders out there, but I just want to say... how I chose to view my pin collections is on me, controlled by me, its me who decides, me, me, me... Status symbol collectors... this is their choice and well... good for them, more out of the mainstream pins for me! No one will ever trigger my starting an Ariel collection with their words. Hahaha!

True dat!

The status symbol collectors. Bleh. Yes i collect Ariel, but in a very specific way: with her tail (though a few leggy ones did make it) And her sisters. No Eric, mostly (the R/C stained glass Eric got in). And maybe with Vanessa. While the Heroine round is pretty, it doesn’t call to me, I still prefer the Briar Rose one, which I doubt I’ll get. And yes I have a few of those “status symbol” pins (a few WDI oval frames, DSF surprise releases) but I never paid asswads of money for them nor will I pay asswads of money going forward.

I’m also seeing the status symbol thing come up in the fantasy pin community. 3 digit prices for a fantasy pin? Nope. No how, no way. Don’t care who made it. Not paying it. I’m down for presale pricing, not the in-hand prices. So I won’t get one or two pins I really want. Oh well. There will be more to come out.

I wish more people would stand back and breathe when it comes to pins. They’d save a lot of money and not feed the hype train as much, which in turn keeps the sharks from getting fed!

I feel like this has been happening with just certain collections too. Zootopia saw to a revived interest in Lion King and Robin Hood pins, more are coming out and if you don't have x profile your collection is balls. I've practically given up trying to trade for anything recently, and just wait until I have a,few extra dollars to buy some TSUM blind packs <w>

I agree Merlin. Plus, the is a surge of people doing legit pickups at cost. I see it all over social media. It's great but makes the pins sell faster. I also see many regulars at the park including a husband and wife team who each buy two pins of everything at every store. I know they sell them for profit. Some day it will come down to wristbands or a way for Disney to track sales, like they scanned our AP's to make sure we only got one Lunar New Year button.

You know, they scan our passes for our discount, I’m surprised they don’t track it that way...

This is a company, that when WDW introduced Magic Bands and took away Annual Pass Ticket media was completely blindsided that when APs went to buy merchandise they no longer had a way to prove that they were APs and eligible for a discount (and then WDW quickly had to send out a benefits card). Right hand (tickets) and left hand (merchandise) don't know what each other is doing, so the software has no chance to be useful for both.

Just a public service announcement that I, apparently, will never be a “real” Alice collector. And I don’t care.
