So I contemplated even making this post but feel it is necessary. I can’t go into much detail as per forum rules on this thread. So if you would like more specific info please PM me.

Admins if this violates the forum rules in any way please delete.

In short my wife responded to a pick up ad on a different site. Everything was agreed upon and payed for. Waited for the seller to contact us with news of a successful or non successful pick up. Doesn’t happen so my wife contacts the seller whom states that they already refunded us the money because they didn’t get a ticket to purchase the pins. But they were still able to get a few sets of the pins but now the price is twice as much. So we declined.

The money is now pending in PayPal until tomorrow. It had better clear!

As of now it could be worse. We could be out the pins and the money but assuming it clears tomorrow all we really had to deal with was a pick up shark who tried to inveigle us into giving up our first born.

Glad to hear you are protected through PayPal. That behavior is so infuriating!!

I've always wondered why sellers even bother with the pre-sells when they're the type of seller who wants market value? Like, if you know you're that type of seller, who's going to want whatever the pins are going for...why offer a pre-sell pick-up?

In addition to being unfair to buyers like you, it's sort of a lot of work and stress that they're causing themselves...?

My personal opinion with sellers like this is it is basically a line of free credit.

They get however many people to prepay. They then have funds for the initial purchase of the pins and extra.

This was done a month prior to the release. And with 2 other people that we know of. So a few hundred dollars at least just between 3 of us. With 30 days to pay it back basically.

I just wonder how many people just payed the rediculous increase on top of what they already paid.

Yuck. I guess I never thought about it that way. Tying other people's money up like that...definitely a crappy thing to do. Good luck with the resolution!

Another reason might be this way of thinking - sometimes prices rise after a pin is sold out, but often prices start off high and fall shortly after. If you are doing a presale and the prices happen to rise, you can cancel the sale and resell it at the higher price. But if the prices fall, then you will have locked in the sale at the higher price.

I’m sorry but what you describe is so deceptively devious...like who even thinks to do this. I’m all about the pretrade/presale just so I don’t over-buy something but this is like next level...disgusting... @AlaskanMalamute did the PayPal clear?

Yea it cleared yesterday. So no true harm just a bad experience. I’m probably more disgruntled because we’re all so spoiled with all of the wonderful members on here that do pickups so close to cost or at a marginal mark up.

If you paid Friends and Family then you are out of luck. If you paid for Goods, open up a case with PayPal.

Yea I always do goods and service with these type of purchases.

I opened a claim immediately after receiving the email from PayPal. But it only gets better!

This is clearly not the sellers first time working this angle. Because the refund was posted to my account the seller was able to get my claimed denied. So today is going to be a on the phone with PayPal day.

But wait there’s more! We started contacting admins from the other site about the situation. We then got a nasty message from the seller about it. After a little back and forth the seller blames it on a PayPal error. We tell the seller to refund us as a direct payment and not an echeck like the first time(takes 7-10business days to clear). The seller states it was just sent again.

Check PayPal and there was a payment posted by the seller but guess what it wasn’t for the full amount. Sent screenshots of what our original payment was and what she sent us. Seller states they payed us what she received now no answer.

Looks like Andy & I are dealing with the same person (I also always do ppgs). Still waiting for my re-refund that got cancelled before.(I wasn't offered marked up pins though, just almost no communication).

Glad you posted, otherwise I'd have waited longer to follow up.....

To send a direct payment, you have to have funds in your PayPal account. If you received an e-check the first time, it is likely because the seller had already removed all funds from her account and had to issue your refund through another payment method, which takes time, which is part of why the e-check takes so long. If you have funds in your account, the refund is pretty darned instant.

Also, "what she received" ... is the refund much less than the full amount, or is it "minus PayPal fees" less than full amount? Because that phrasing suggest she thinks she only needs to return the cut that she got from PayPal--which technically is true, PayPal needs to cough up its share of your payment, which the seller never received. However, there is LITERALLY a freakin' option to refund in full or in part. So it's like she sat there and selected "partial refund" and typed in an amount. Because "full" would be full and that would be the end of the story--you'd get all your money back and that would include the portion that PayPal took.

Whether or not it's the seller's first time pulling this type of stunt, she is not very smart. I'm super-sorry you are dealing with this (I have confidence PayPal will sort it out for you, because no goods = full refund, and there are clearly no goods for you here--but you'll have to spend time and energy on the phone to get that resolution) but this is precisely why I don't do presales of this nature. Even if the person isn't a duplicitous shark who holds out for more money, you are giving someone your money when you have no guarantee that they will acquire the goods "promised." There are honest folks, and there are less-than-stellar-morals folks, but the bottom line is, your money is tied up with a stranger. It just ain't worth it, kids.

Ugh this is so frustrating!
Surprised PayPal allows this party to have an account!!
Good luck on your day talking to PayPal, and hope some Good news comes your way!!
