So, just to clear this up: Disney Pins Blog posted a new photo of this pin, blaming bright lighting and the angle for the "controversy":

It's weird for me that they went with Mickey. I mean, all the other pins from the series feature a non-humanoid animal, so Mickey doesn't seem to fit. Pluto would have made more sense if they wanted to go with fab five. Personally, I was expecting Simba/hoping for Mushu.

All of them are sidekicks!! Why would you do Mickey!? This set was a total snooze. XD

You're right! Now I really feel we got robbed of a potential Mushu... Or Heihei, he's so colorful, after all. But eh, I wasn't sold of the idea of this set anyway.

I enjoyed Mickey. I figured for the surprise it was gonna be him though some of the other characters would’ve made more sense.

Was everyone just so unimpressed with this set that no one cared about the Surprise? XD
Yes. :p

However DSF often goes with a classic Mickey for its pins so it was what I predicted jokingly to friends in line would be the surprise pin prior to the announcement - and I was right. :D

But it was a quiet and underwhelming release overall which was a relief to me since I needed - and got - the Chessie!

I loved the surprise! So care is radiating from me! :mickey2:

I appreciate and also relieved others were not so excited about the set (although 242 people showing for 150 guaranteed spots is not really 'nothing'... its just not the 700-1000 people who showed this past summer). Agree... low demand allowed me to gain the Cheshire (also my primary goal for this release). Two pins for the perm. collection! Yay! :cheshire::mickey:

Theme is a bit blown by them using Mickey, but perhaps if more paint palettes come out they won't all be cute and cuddly side kicks anyway? Stitch would be perfect for this set, but also not a secondary character.

Do you think DSSH wants to offer Mickey pins since he is a primary character for Disney (or perhaps 'THE' character of Disney...)? But DSSH wants to sell out their LE pins (since pins hanging around cannot be good for their pin business). So to sell out AND offer Mickey pins, DSSH routinely does Mickey as a surprise?

Finally... how cruel (to everyone but 150 lucky people) would it have been to make one of the other popular characters the surprise. DSSH cannot win... but that's pin trading. :p

Mickey was used as part of the logo of DSF for many, many years prior to the merge with Ghiradelli's. So he's always represented the store in a sense i.e. their grand opening pin:
pin39448th200

I expect they will always want to keep him in the pin mix. :)

Mickey's been the surprise for several of their recent releases - in-store Dog Walking release and Christmas release.

Not PTDs, but WDI will be releasing another set of Character Clusters: Peter Pan (Lost Boys alert!), LATT, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians (SGT. TIBBS!!), SITS (both Lady Squirrels!), and Jungle Book.

Looks like these are in chronological order as well, no?

I wonder what they're up to ... I mean, it could just be that "chronological order" is the new hot way to keep track of things and release them in a logical fashion. But this sudden penchant for All Things in Order makes me wonder if there's some big something-or-other afoot and we just don't know it yet. Looking back, were the Villain profiles in any kind of order? Or is this New for 2018?

Nope, they definitely were not...

I wonder too...
