Actually, you don't need to drop out. When you missed the start of the game, Wally changed your status to VIP. All this means is that you can't make an arrest to win the game in the end (but you also should not be subject to the posting periods). You are free (and encouraged) to interact with and act just like the other detectives; there is no reason why you can't and shouldn't play.
 
Exactly what Stef said....feel freeto jump in....if you need a backstory as to why your character is late....something as you got stuck signing autographs and taking pictures with guests will do. You are VIP so basically all that means is you can't make an official arrest and win the game.
