    Hello,

I have been slowly adding pins to my wants and really like a lot of the Piece of Disney Movies and Piece of Disneyland History Pins. I would think these would be difficult to counterfeit but wanted to know if that’s an issue so I know to be extra careful if I decide to buy on the secondary market or trade for one.

    Thank you!

I havent heard of fake PODMs liek that but there are several fantasy PODMs out there. The only thing I heard about that could be consider fakes is that some people have changed the scenes in the pins so it has a more popular and more valued scene. In my opinion this kind of makes the pin fake since its not competely original but is tampered with. I dont think that this is very common though so porbably not something to worry about. There is a great book that describes almost all avalible scenes in all 24 pins so the only time I would be worried is if there is a scene not described in that book. Easier to know when it comes to the first 12 pins. The last 12 ones is a bit harder since they have more spread out scenes. the first 12 are all from a consistant strip from the movie and also because of that there are lots more "bad" scenes with like no character in it and such.

One of the two Genie PoDH have been faked as well. I'll double check and see which one it is.

I've actually seen a bunch of PODH pins (can't remember which ones) on eBay out of China in the past, but they all seemed to be missing the dome and the item from the attraction. In addition, I believe they had no card.

Definitely like to know that one since one of my sons collects Aladdin and that would be one I’d be tempted to get one

The dome is the main reason I figured they might not get counterfeited, so it makes since that the dome would be missing if the pin wasn’t authentic.

They also faked some of the 1st year PODH. I remember Dumbo and I think 20K Under the Sea. But I don't remember the specifics. Those were "counterfeited" as in someone from the US commissioned a factory to make more. Not the leftover Disney scrap, which is where the no bubble ones come from, I think.

I believe it's this one, though it looks like the scrapper items have been taken off of the bay. Just be sure it comes in card and you see actual pictures of the pin. :) [IMG]

It looks like the bubble missing is from the Genie faked PODH?

Seems like any PODH that does not have a bubble is either a fake or damaged. Both being undesirable... avoid no bubble. Is this an appropriate conclusion. If so, I am going to add this as another of my trading 'rules'. :)

So fakes don't have a bubble. What about the tower of terror one mentioned earlier, did it have a bubble? I'm on the look out for these so having a basis to determine authenticity would be good.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the photo, but it’s from Pinpics and should be the legit version (right?) so I thought maybe I just couldn’t see it. Either way, no bubble with the piece of history inside means no good!

Wait a minute! I believe some of the first podh didn't have bubbles on purpose. I believe Dumbo, Tough to be a Bug, jungle cruise, skyway, test track, Muppets, and Mr. Toad (and maybe others) were all like that. So not having a bubble might not mean anything depending on which it is.

Let me just slow you down for just a few parsecs there. While I would say this probably is true of the later PoDH releases, I'm almost positive that it does not apply to all of the earliest ones. It has been a long time since I pulled out mine, but I'm almost 100% positive that Tower of Terror, at the very least, does not have a bubble.

In all fairness, I will admit that I traded for mine, not on card. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of it as I got it shortly after release and nobody was questioning these pins or even considering counterfeiting them way back then. If you would like, I can check my others and let you know which do/do not have bubbles (I believe I have cards for the rest that I own).

So I did a bit of research through Pinpics and it appears there are a few without bubbles, but not many. All pins should have a piece of Disney history included (hence the series name) so if that’s not present, I’d presume that pin to be damaged or fake. The pins that don’t have bubbles have the piece of history under plastic that isn’t bubblelike or it’s under epoxy (if the Pinpics description is correct). I think the Genie example above from Pinpics is damaged or faked because there’s a spot for a bubble, but there’s either no bubble or nothing in it (but the bubble appears to be missing to me). I found pictures of the same pin on the card on another site and the card indicates a piece of the Hyperion’s carpet is included (and the carpet is dark, not white, so something should be visible). So, you just have to look up which pins should have a bubble.

Ultimately, it seems that the piece of Disney history pins haven’t been known to be counterfeited with the bubble, which was part of what I really wanted to know. So, if I buy one with a bubble, hopefully it’s likely to be authentic. I don’t think I’ll be looking to collect the ones without the bubble, so at least I think I’m good. I didn’t realize how many there are!

I should have been more clear in my explanation. While not all of the PoDH pins have a bubble, all of them do contain the fragment of the Disney history. After all, that is the purpose of the series. Those that don't have the bubble do have it under a flat epoxy (or epoxy-like material). I think it would be likely and fair to assume that those pins that do not contain the fragment of Disney history are either damaged or (shall we say?) unauthorized ... and in either case, probably best avoided.

I apologize if my previous answer was not clear or as helpful as it should or could have been. My focus was just on the question of the bubbles/no bubbles that I may have missed the proverbial forest for the trees and if that is the case, I do apologize.

You're correct. Many of the early ones (most? All?) did not have bubbles (but always had the item, as you/others stated later). The item was always something very flat and just adhered to the pin with epoxy or similar. So if it's ToT, or the ones I listed, or possibly others from the early days, it should not have a bubble.

The picture on Pin Pics is the picture that was officially released by Disney for the pin. In the high res version of it, you can clearly see a bubble, but it appears to have nothing in it or the object is white. Sometimes, it is not uncommon for Disney to photograph the prototype for the web and then never update it later. I have seen this happen many times over the years.

This, or use concept art and never switch it out when the pin is finally produced. I can't tell you how many times I have seen this happen (or not happen) over the years.

Since Disney now owns Star Wars, I vote for some pins with a piece of film or artifacts inside!
