I heard about his death late last night/early this morning. He was a mainstay at DSSH, manning security lines, making sure people didn't purchase over their limit of PTDs (back when it was one style and one per person), etc.

This news hit so hard - not only was Nelson a major part of the past several years of our local pin world, he was a smart, good guy who added to our experience by being part of it. I just can't imagine going to DSF and not seeing him there - keeping people under control and still managing to keep a sense of humor about our pinsanity. This hurts.

RIP Nelson. You are already missed greatly.

I've been heartbroken over this since I found out yesterday. He was such a sweet man. We always talked for a bit when I stopped in, and he would always ask what I got, and often try to convince me to buy all of the pins or offer to be my "friend" when it was slow so I could buy more pins. Just a few days ago, I stayed and had a longer visit with him and another man who was visiting from Orange County. I'm so glad I was able to at least have that final conversation with him.

He is going to be very much missed.

I'm feeling so sad for Nelson's family as I know they were very close. I'm not a DSF/DSSH regular Nelson always made it a point to say hello. I always remembered how he made sure the line was kept in order and no one was cutting those who came to the releases alone. As the others had said Nelson was always a protector, a "big brother" to all of us.

Nelson, you will be missed by the pin community and all of those you protected.

I did not go to the wake, but I did go to the funeral and the burial. The funeral chapel was full (some people had to stand since all the seats were full), and I'd say about 70-80 people went up to the burial afterward. It was nice to see such a large turnout.

I am Nelson's younger brother Warren.

Our family wishes to express its sincere thanks for all of your
prayers, visits, and many acts of kindness extended to us
during the passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle,
nephew and cousin. We greatly appreciate the beautiful
floral arrangements we received and your kind words,
monetary donations, and time. We realize how truly blessed
we are to have such caring friends during this sad time. Our
family was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and
attendance at Nelson’s farewell services. No words can
express the sorrow of losing Nelson, and your acts of
kindness and expression of sympathy will not be forgotten.

Warren, thank you for your post. Your brother was an incredibly kind, funny, and gentle man. I frequent the Soda Fountsin shop, and every time he saw me he asked me how my collection was going; whenever a pin came out that he knew I would want for my collection he always asked me if I got it. He remembered many pin traders and what they collected. He was able to keep order in the shop without ever raising his voice or getting angry, and was often the calm in a very busy store.

He was very well respected and loved in the pin community. He is the one of the only cast members at the shop that I never heard a single bad word about, ever. He is very greatly missed.
