DisneyStore Limited Edition 17" Dolls Discussion
So I've sat back and listened for a while to the back-and-forth discussion about scalpers, which is pleasantly civil so far and full of fascinating debate about whether or not to let new people in on all the "inside information." Now that my anger at UPS has finally blown over (yay!) I feel I have two cents to add.

I would just like to point out to everyone (new and old collectors alike) that scalpers are not necessarily new people; it's wishful thinking to assume all scalpers must be new because there's no way they wouldn't have gotten caught if they'd been scalping for a year or more. I didn't have a great example of this ideology until last week. A "collector" who shall remain nameless has been very vocal on a particular FB group. Well, the day the newest wave of Frozen dolls came out he was furious that his order for an LE Anna was canceled and made the mistake of venting about it on the group. I guess he got it figured out because last night I saw his advertisement for that same doll for $260...on that same FB page. I know for a fact this person has been actively "collecting" for at least as long as I have (one year next month), and probably longer. Then there is another group full of veteran collectors called Disney Flea Market, which has all but endorsed scalping for as long as I'd been a member. Another incident relating to the newest wave of Frozen dolls happened the day the dolls were released in-store and before the online release on that page when a scalper tried to sell the whole set for $800. When a group of people immediately commented about how completely inappropriate it was to want that much for the dolls before they finished selling at retail, the admins deleted all of their comments. Then they came back with a pinned post saying they would ban anyone who created "unnecessary drama" before the actual release, and then commented back and forth literally for hours about how ridiculous it was for anybody to complain about the scalper's prices in the first place. I know plenty of well-respected, high up collectors on that page who scalp frequently and are never maligned by anyone for it because of how long they have been "collecting." Needless to say, I am no longer a visitor to their page.

So that said, I don't think scalping should have much of anything to do with collecting experience; they are not one and the same, and a person on this page should not automatically be trusted just by their join date or the size of their collection. It's true that it's a huge factor in determining who might be a scalper, but it's not the only factor. I have four LE dolls, including two that are on their way to me, and I'm sure that most people here have more than that if not entire sets of Disney LE dolls. But I am no scalper and buy only the dolls I want for my collection to begin with, since I don't want all the characters or want to hold off in the hopes of buying earlier ones.

But on the flip side, I think newer collectors, including myself, HAVE to understand that it's perfectly logical for veteran collectors to be suspicious of us at first. I would say why, but most of them have already said it so perfectly I don't see the need. I also agree that discussion, particularly about the non-financial details of the dolls such as whether or not the Cinderella dolls really look like Lily James (the jury's still out on that one, lol), what costumes they will pick for upcoming dolls, whether there will be more Harrods sets, etc. is a great indicator of who's really interested in the dolls for their intended purpose. And like veterans have already said, if you've been on the forum for a while AND contributed to the thread during non-release seasons that's really the best way for anyone to see if someone's a scalper or not. I too am suspicious of guests who lurk around the forum and read posts since at least one is probably on a reconnaissance mission for eBay at any one time, but at the end of the day I don't think it's right to be overly paranoid and hide information to the point where most of us are in the dark. It's great to talk to a group of people who share this love of Disney and the LE dolls, and I absolutely love reading discussions here so long as they are polite, which they are 95% of the time. I'd hate to see the strong community feeling of this thread be ruined because of scalper paranoia.

I am sorry if this came out as babble, since it is rather long-winded now that I've read it over to myself! But really, on a personal level I have felt very welcome here on the forum and look forward to future discussions with all of you, whether you joined this morning or have been collecting since the beginning. :)

this. /thumbs up

I saw Cinderella today and loved it! I loved the costumes so much and it makes me super excited to get these dolls now! :) I thought Lily James made a great Cinderella and Cate Blanchett was perfect as Lady Tremaine.

Frozen Fever was also really adorable and it made me really want dolls in these outfits...although that would mean we would have four Annas and four Elsas...and then we will probably get more down the line when Frozen 2 comes out!!! I will need to dedicate an entire bookshelf to just Frozen dolls by the time they are done LOL.

I received my blast off email for Blue Cinderella but still haven't recieved one for Wedding Cinderella, but the order still says active.

I can't wait to see these dolls in person! :)

Its not babble, very well said!!!

For anyone who is interested in getting an epilogue Anna-like shimmer of their very own, please try Rimmel London Natural Bronzer in Sunshine. I promise you won't look sweaty!! Ha!

I still remember, back when I was at DS back in 2012 on the day that the Designer set of Belle and the Beast, there was a guy who barely made it out of the store before shouting out to the entire mall that he was selling the set for $200 dollars, even as he was surrounded by Cast Members and mall security. Now THAT'S nerve.

Anyhow, very productive weekend. Saw Frozen Fever and Cinderella on Saturday and then got the blast-off email for Cinderella on Sunday. UPS hasn't registered the tracking number yet, but considering the day of the week, I'm not panicked yet.

I think this conversation has highjacked the thread, so I'm going to make one last post about it before I start a new post to discuss the OT.

Anyone whose feelings are hurt over the paranoia about scalpers is actually lucky: you clearly haven't been burned by a scalper, which believe me, hurts more and makes you feel mega stupid. Once it happens to you, you can't take back the feeling or the paranoia that comes with it, no matter how much people say it's not fair to act upon that paranoia. This forum is very well known and has been infiltrated by sharks, so many don't feel "safe" posting here.

Fact is Disney fans / collectors are extremely helpful and kind. We love sharing and feel good thinking we've helped someone. That's why we're such prey for sharks. It sucks to have to be so guarded, but I could tell you countless stories that involved me and my collecting friends... but then you'd become just as jaded as I am :D

Really, though, you should feel encouraged to contribute to threads. We can talk about things besides links and item numbers, you know. Starting with my next post lol.

I hated it in the photo and then loved it in person. The ribbon on top is ribbon, rather than a thick, hideous jutting-up plastic handle like I had thought from the picture. The bow on the back is adorable. The box material is better quality than the photo looked. The cut-outs on the sides are really unique and pretty, they remind me both of her carriage and also of C for Cinderella.

Her doll itself also looks more gorgeous in person than I had expected. I know Disney is getting a bit of a reputation for taking unflattering pictures, but I've never been as deceived before as I was with her. I can't stop staring at her now, she has pride-of-place on the table right by my computer. I was almost certain that I was going to take a pass on her, I didn't buy online and got too tired being awake all night to line up for what I thought was a doll I wasn't going to buy, and if it wasn't for my fiance (lining up, seeing her in person and making the decision on my behalf), I would have missed out.

Okay, I am OBSESSED with the box. I can't believe I almost didn't get this doll now that I'm so connected with it. I opened her tonight, the first time I've done that to a LE. I boil permed her hair to make it look like the movie and plan to do some more work on her. Another first with a LE for me. Also, and this is the part that makes me crazy, I decorated her box with over 100 rhinestones.

I loved the movie so much that it's bumped Cinderella up to my favorite LE doll. Fingers crossed we get a fairy godmother with the video release! Doubtful but that's what makes it a dream / wish.

Please share photos when you are done with the makeover! I didn't even think about them doing another LE with the video release because of it being live action -- oh I hope they do! The fairy godmother classic doll was so beautiful -- a 17" of her would be stunning!

I know I can't believe how much my feelings have changed from seeing the stock photos to actually getting the doll in person. I was glad I was able to see the movie in a prescreen because that helped me to decide to get her and I am so happy I did! It's a shame because so many people reacted negatively to the photos as I did and decided not to get her, when they might have thought differently if that had seen the doll in person.

Even the photos of the box looked horrible and now I am obsessed with that box too. It is beautiful!

I much prefer her box to the heirloom collection ones. On the flip side, I think part of the reason the doll is so special to me is because she can be improved in ways I can manage. I'm getting rid of that oil leak on her face. It looks *better* once she's all opened up, but there's still too much of it. I'll leave some around her cheeks and eyes to give her a glow, but it's just too much all over.

My hopes aren't too high that there'll be another release with the video, but boy are my fingers crossed! I think the fairy godmother doll would be nicest, but I wouldn't complain if they released Tremaine. It's the only live movie that could really get multiple dolls. BatB can only release Belle... Which I can't wait to get now lol. Disney roped me into another collection. Gah!

I'll for sure post pics I forgot to say. If you'd like a teaser of her in the "salon", here you go. You can tell by the expression on her face she wasn't happy to see a camera at the moment.

haha, so glad to hear you are loving her. please post photos, would love to see what you've done with the doll and box.

i opened the plastic case on mine and touched up her hair and tilted her hand and face to how i wanted them to look but it's strange, i never got a feeling of wanting to take her out. geezuz, if i had another one, i would. but she is just so pretty in the box. ; u;

i... i actually had mixed feelings about the movie. urgh, i feel like i should go watch it again to soak it in. i remember posting that "oh no, the trailers definitely didn't show too much and it's all about seeing the scenes together" and i probably should retract that statement, cause i didn't feel as excited watching the scenes i already watched.

i still very much love the movie. it was gorgeous and so is the doll. no regrets whatsoever about getting her. it was weird cause i think even when i first saw her and was like "... did they make a mistake and put the 12" doll photo?", i was like "oh well, i need her in my life" haha. i am really happy with her. c:

i would want the prince. o: that would be nice. him in his royal getup would compliment her ball gown well. omg what if he was posed like he was chasing after her.

they probably won't go for that, let alone him as a limited edition doll but it would be cute.

I've wondered how much of the work on these dolls, if any, is done by hand. It does seem like some of it would have to be. Is there info somewhere on how they are made, as in any work that's done by hand? I would love to know more about it.

I think a good deal is done by hand, as opposed to an assembly machine. At least that's the case with most vinyl dolls. I'm sure they use various machines, but I believe they are hand operated and there's a lot of hand assembly and detailing. It's just done in a country that pays theirs workers much less than most of the rest of the world buying the dolls (otherwise we would be paying over $500 for these dolls). Also, you have the pre-production work and cost. There's a really good video on Youtube from last summer about the design creation process on Sleeping Beauty LE. As a doll geek and general art lover, I really enjoyed it (but I watch all the Tonner doll videos too): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6HbLtpg9WE Another good video on the creation process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXdk2R21_Hs

There are actually a lot interesting videos on YouTube about the doll making process. There's just not a lot out there on specific lines.

I cannot wait to see what she looks like when she is finished! I was so on the fence about getting her myself, and the box was kind of jarring at first, but I ended up loving the film so much that it made me hate myself for not saving up enough money in time to get her. She looks gorgeous from all of the photos ive seen, and it really makes me wonder what Belle will look like when Beauty and the Beast comes out (assuming they make a doll of Emma Watson, but after Cinderella I really don't see why not)!

Omg, I can't tell you how much I love this photo! It's great. She looks just like a model getting her hair and makeup done before a shoot. Hilarious. :)

I am so excited for the BATB live action dolls now. I'm sure they'll make them. I can't wait! I just hope they turn out as beautiful as Cinderella did.

I think its safe to say that we will probably be getting dolls for each of their live action fairytales now. I assume that we will be getting more live action fairytales than just Cinderella and BaTB. Disney will probably announce more films at the D23 Expo. I am not too fond of them remaking all of their animated classics, but Cinderella impressed me enough to have more of an open mind on future films like BaTB (it felt like I was watching a tribute to the original film).

But I expect them to go all out with Belle! I am already imagining what her golden ball gown will look like!

So I know that this will probably NEVER happen, but wouldn't it be amazing if the release of the Cinderella doll mean't that we got a Jack Sparrow doll for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales"? I don't expect it to happen, and it probably won't happen, but the thought of one actually being made sounds amazing!

With the shitload of **** that's come out lately.. it may be possible. I would most likely not buy him though.

i second this. i also have an issue with her top ribbon that makes it look like a lunch box but i just taped the access ribbon to the side to make it flat. haha!

This. Exactly my thought when I saw the stock photos, especially with her in the box. Lunch box was all I could think of. But I'm among everyone else that when I saw her in person, the box was more beautiful than any of the 17-inch boxes I've seen. As for the doll, the more I look at her, the more she's growing on me. Every time I step into the room with the dolls, I'd look at her, then look at the rest of the dolls displayed with her. I'm so glad my husband convinced me to go ahead with this and believed that she will grow on me.

Also late to the convo but agreed that I'm thankful that my husband gets the hobby and is actually the one who will push me toward getting a doll if I'm on the fence about it because of poorly taken Disney stock photos. He'll laugh at me that I'm excited like a little child when I receive my dolls but am very supportive of it. I am actually afraid of bringing this hobby up to any of my friends, or coworkers because I know the kind of look I will receive if they hear that 1) I collect dolls, and 2) the amount (albeit retail) that I pay for the dolls. And don't even mention my mother, which is funny because my mother is the exact reason I'm starting to collect Disney dolls now. I remember distinctly that when I was a child and wanted Disney princess dolls (this was back when Disney princesses were very successful in the 90s), my mother will always tell me no they are too much or no you have enough toys. Gosh I can only imagine her expression if and when she finds out my shrine!

I started with the animator's collection and were picky with the classic dolls as I don't think the recent years' version do the original animation's any justice as far as resemblance of face mold and costume goes. Not that I could've done anything to help it but I really wish I had known about the limited edition dolls much sooner. I had spotted some of the designer villain's collection when they went on clearance on Disney's website but never knew they were just part of a bigger collection (and it were the designer beautified ursula and queen of hearts so they didn't do it for me). I didn't find out about the 17-inches until the second wave of Frozen dolls were being picked up in store. I love the first two waves of Frozen dolls and especially Snow Queen Elsa but can't find myself to justify $2k for a doll; I'm glad I got the chance to own the recent Frozen dolls and am hopeful we will see a Frozen Fever LE dolls. Also attending D23 for the very first time this summer and am excited to see what merchandise, doll announcements they'll be making and crossing my fingers for a D23 Elsa!

here are photos of my doll!

I'd LOVE to see the box after you've bedazzled it with all that rhinestones!! Please do post pictures when possible!

I'm hopeful for a LE Lady Tremaine - for some reason fairy godmother didn't do so much for me but oh man, a Cate Blanchett Lady Tremaine LE doll would be to die for! Either in her entrance dress or her ball attire.

I would die for a Prince LE. I've never cared too much for a male doll but I would love to get him in either the green outfit when they met for the first time, or his blue marriage attire. I'm really debating on whether to get the wedding classic doll set because I do love the prince's attire in it but it bugs me how unhappy (and murderous) toward each other they are, and how they didn't seem to get richard madden's face mold correctly and he somehow looks like a chimp to me...
