As a non-PODM fan, I have to say I don't like the scene itself considering the angle is terrible, but considering it has Eric, it would definitely be a grail for most. HOWEVER, I am inclined to also call shenanigans like tyleet did. It just doesn't make sense for this, a grail of all grail scene for LM (which had really bad scenes anyways) to just appear out of the blue a long time after it came out, and after putting your own cell in was discovered.

I'd like to believe it's true, but I just feel like, if it was, why is it so late, and it isn't like anything we've seen before so if it is real, why did Disney go all the way to end of the film JUST to make 1 or 2 POMDs???

Saw it come up on ebay last night and was SOO tempted but I just could not justify the $350 price tag. It may be worth more than that, I don't know, but I just could not justify it right then. I saw it got some bids at $150 but then the seller ended it so I am guessing somebody messaged him to buy it. No idea what it went for.

ok wait a sec. i was watching this on the bay last night when it was an auction, not a bin, and had an opening bid of $150. then, i believe it was this morning, i saw it had gotten another bid. now, the auction is gone and was replaced with another auction starting at $150 but with a bin of $350 and now it's gone. hmmm...fishy fishy

I have other cells from other movies that a lot of you wouldn't believe exist too. There are people out there that are exclusivley PoDM collectors, and every once in a while, something comes along that we havent seen yet. It happens to me about once a month. I have another friend that this is all that they collect......we have talked about this pin and it's rarity and we are sure to let you know what is to come of it.

The question of this poll is: "Would you consider this PODM a Grail Scene?" What makes a grail a grail is in the sole perspective of the owner or buyer. In any movie there are scenes that connect with an audience that emote a feeling. Did Disney go out and take a poll of all our "feelings" on individual scenes? Of course not. My "grail" scene is not among what was put in to the Little Mermaid PODM pins.

Although some pin collectors would consider this scene a "grail" only because you haven't seen it...Ever. The Little Mermaid PODM came out nearly a year ago. And for all that time, if this scene was in existence someone surely would have posted a photo of the pin just for shear bragging rights. So lets take a look at the facts or for those who are baffeled by it's authenticity, the Evidence.

1. Check out the PODM Library of Scenes of all the separate film cels in all 24 pins on Pin Talk: http://www.pintalk.com/showthread.php?5236-The-PODM-Library

2. See the published book by. E Rudolph on PODM's coming out for sale in 2 weeks. This is a great reference for all PODM's. First sale of this book is at a Chicago pin trading event.

3. Still want that "Grail" scene, then go buy 100 of them on Ebay from Ebay seller Movie Film Cell for $49.99 and custom make any grail scene you want.

So, with just those facts, do you still consider this pin a grail now? Or is it just a cool film scene in a Little Mermaid pin frame?

I'm not saying it's authentic or fake, But to use in talk or somebody's book from Chicago as the authority on a pins authenticity is beyond ridiculous!!!! Neither of these are or were involved in the pin making process therefore have no expert authority to say. E-rudolf is just another pin collector. thats all. The only way to get true authenticity is to go through Disney, otherwise anything said here is just pure speculation one way or the other.

Having said that, Angel, if that is your pin, you have a great scene and congrats on it!!!!

I for one am going to believe in innocent until PROVEN guilty!! The american way!!!

Where's the soundtrack? It is on all of the PoDM pins with film frames in them. This really does look like a cel replacement.

I'll post a better scene with the sound lines later on tonight. For whatever reason imageshack is giving me a hard time.

This is why I think it looks like a replacement. In the scenes I have, the cel color extends all the way to the left before the purple starts. Also, the areas on the right are cut out on all of them (if that makes sense, I have no idea how to explain that lol!).

Whether it's a replacement or not, it is very cool. Perhaps even more so if it is a replacement. It's something I really would like to attempt someday.

Yep, same with the one I have.

Yep, that's the scene I'll be framing with my others. I sprained my right wrist, and left elbow the night before the release, so I was going to make sure I got a scene I really wanted!

Back on topic: I went back and checked out all of the scenes I originally had (including trades), and it's the same for all of those.

I would also call foul on this one. I have been a pretty serious collector of PODM's and I have also seen replaced cells and this one looks replaced for several reasons that have already been stated. Here is one of my LM PODM's and as the other poster you can see the color goes to the soundtrack and doesn't have a black frame around it.

I hope its real because I love seeing new ones but as old as it is it seems rare. Now that said IF its real it is for sure a grail scene for someone if for no other reason than rarity.

I found a few questionable areas with this PODM which leads me to believe it's custom made/not real. It goes with what others have already pointed out but I marked the trouble spots with a paint program...

Red - This is the biggest thing that to me stands out... I glanced at eBay and my own PODM collection for confirmation. The other cels/scenes all have black frames around them, especially on the right hand side of the cel.
Examples:

v92p.jpg

(See how her hair is cut off by the frame and it's nice and straight?)

6i2p.jpg

0u6s.jpg

(Again, right side, big chunky black strip that's apart of the frame).

The scene posted in question is missing that on the right side. Plus it seems suspiciously cut at a slanted angle where as the others are relatively straight and clean cut by the black bar. I have a PODM where the cel was placed at a crooked angle but it still has the black frame, even on the right side.

Green - The turquoise strip on the right side comes extremely far over whereas the other ones it's not so prevalent on the right side. It's SO far over in that scene that we see past it and see a darker greenish strip which seems shifty to me. Also the sprocket holes do not cut into the scene like they do in the examples above of other PODMs. The sprocket holes are pretty pronounced and clear to see on the example PODMs were they are faint on the scene in question.

Yellow - There's what appears to be a large scratch here that looks pretty deep. This could be just a manufacturing flaw... but given the other two points I made above, it could also very well indicate tampering with the pin itself. It could be where apart of the pin was held back as it was opened to remove the previous cel in order to replace it with the new "human" scene. If this was just a fuzz or something else on the pin then ignore this point.

Last point that leads me to believe this is fake... 2nd gen PODMs were pretty good about using nice scenes where the characters weren't obscured/had their backs to the camera. The only PODMs we saw that with were the balcony scene in BATB where you clearly saw Beast holding the mirror to give to Belle, the rose and her back turned. However everything else in the cel was completely visible to make up for Belle's back being turned (the expression on Beast's face, the mirror, the rose...). In this scene... you cannot see Ariel's face and Eric's face is partially obscured by her arm. I think if this scene was to make the cut...they would've put this scene instead (which is literally about half a second after the scene shown in the PODM)

So all in all, my opinion is that this is a custom scene someone made using a previously existing PODM. I hope I'm wrong as I would not want to see someone out of a chunk of money plus this would be an amazing scene to have. Hopefully another similar scene gets posted in the future to prove that these scenes actually do exist.

Dang Laney! You made some great observations! I never would've noticed all of that lol.

Thank you! ^^ Just was looking at it and those things stood out. Again, I hope it turns out to be real as that would be for the best in this situation and really cool if this scene existed :)

I have done a bit of research and found a company that can reproduce a digital image onto a film... Of course there would be differences such as the Audio tracks and such...

If this were able to be changed out and have the dream scene of your choice placed in the frame instead, would you still want it even if it's not original??? We can all think of a scene of our favorite released PoDMs that we would have loved to see made, what if you could sacrifice a poor scene for a grail one, does the pin become worthless or a dream to own???

It becomes a Worthless forgery in my honest opinion. The PODMs would no longer require a hunt and you would be destroying purpose of having a htf scene... The next person can just duplicate your scene... No fun in that at all.
