If the trade is lopsided in your favor, do you say anything or do you just assume they know what they are doing?


For the record, I made the offer in question (so I knew it was in their favor). They didn't say anything but asked questions like was my pin mint, scratched, on card, etc. that made me think they KNEW what I was offering.

I am considering getting out of trading (not collecting or buying) so I have begun to try and get some of my easier wants and it sometimes means I give up more than they are worth!
 
It depends. I check feedback and if the person appears to be new I'd say something. If the person has tons of feedback I assume they know what they are doing. Several of my traders I didn't pay full price for and so I can afford to over trade (within reason) and expect other traders to do the same if they really want something. But my replies always start, "If this trade is still of interest...". If I don't hear back I figure either the pin has been traded, or they have reevaluated.
 
I often offer another pin from their wants or something that looking at their collection they would like. Or just send a free little pin along with it, like a PWP ticket stub pin.
 
Personally, after all these years and dealing with some pretty messed up(very rude) pin people, I don't worry about it. I just send my standard acceptance to a trade --btw is very upfront, but the trader is also given an out if they don't wish to trade. It's up to the other person to know their pins. I'm not their parent. I did my homework.

Trades are hard to make 'fair', people base their pin's 'value' differently. What is 'fair' or 'giving more' is in the eye of the beholder. Rarely do I ever get an offer in what I preceive as 'my favor'. Most traders are asking for me to trade down, way down, so they can trade up. Now, that, I don't consider fair at all.

It all boils down to what you can live with. If you really want the pin, knowing you're 'giving more', then it's up to you on weather you trade or not.
 

ok. YOU offered the lopsided trade, in the other persons favor right? If they are getting the better end of the deal, you do not need to say anything, you know your giving up better than your getting.

The only time to be concerned and to communicate is if it is lopsided and in your favor rather than theirs. If I know i am giving up a nice pin for a lesser but keeper pin, that's my problem. If I knowingly offer a lesser pin for a nicer pin, I try to make sure the other trader is absolutely sure before completing the trade.
 

Correct! I know I am over-trading. And I am guessing because of her references and the questions she asked, she KNOWS I am over trading, but didn't come out and say so. If she had asked, I would have told her that I knew what I was offering was in her favor and ok with me. I'm just wondering if most people ask or if they just "go with it" because its a good deal.

I am not mad or upset or Anything. Just curious.
 
I had a lopsided trade at May's PTN in my favor. I had DSF Jessica Rabbit Stained Easter Egg LE150. The guy saw it and said, wow, I didn't make it out there to get this pin and I really want her. She was mint on her card and in bag. I paid about $20.00 for her.
He said please look through my book and see if there is anything you would like. I came across the Beloved Tales Beauty And The Beast pin . I pointed to it and said, I love this pin, but I'm sure you won't trade this. your lucky to have it.
He said, I will trade you that pin . I said. Sir, this pin is worth wayyyy more than the pin you want. His response was I don't trade by value, I trade for what I want. If your happy, I'm happy, I said I was thrilled and asked him to at least pick another pin or two, but he laughed and said, honey, its perfectly fine.
So sometimes its not always about value, but what collectors want.
 
As someone else said, I check the person's references and look at their collection and traders - if it's obvious the person is an experienced trader I don't feel the need to say anything; otherwise I would say something.
I recently received a request seeking one of my pins and offering 5 or 6 different pins as potential trades. The first choice was very much in my favour and the second choice was roughly an even trade. This person is clearly a very experienced trader - he has tons of references going back several years, a huge collection, many traders, and only about 25 wants. Just in case, I did decide to respond by saying that I would trade for the first choice or, alternatively, the second choice - I wanted to give him an easy out, in case he'd checked off the first one by mistake. He emailed me back that he is happy to trade for the first one.
 
I tell them it's unbalanced and ask if they want to choose something else from my traders to add to the trade. Even then some people don't bother replying! :rant:
 

First off NNNNOOOOOOO don't get out of trading. I like trading with you!!!

If the other person offered me a lopsided trade in my favor I usually offer a second pin in addition to what the other traders wanted. I figure that way they are more likely to to pick me to trade with and it makes it more fair for both traders. I never want unhappy traders (they are less likely to trade with me again).
 
Generally when I notice an offered trade request is lopsided in my favor, I reply to the person offering and ask if that's really what they meant to offer. Nine out of ten times I never hear back. Those rare times I do, I usually offer more than the one pin that's being asked for so I don't feel like I'm cheating someone out of a great pin.

You are so sweet! I like trading but I stop and wonder why I'm buying "traders" instead of just buying for myself. Because I never know if a pin is going to be tradable or not!

I can answer that question for you, because you get to trade with great people like me. :facepalm: Boy was that hard to write with a straight face.
 
At the risk of wading into a potentially explosive topic *puts on riot gear* ... the most important thing to remember is that, at the end of the day, a pin's value is subjective and a pin is worth only what someone is willing to give up, whether in pins or $$$, to acquire. Yes, I do realize that a pin might generally be accepted as valued at 'X' price range, but if you don't like/want that pin, would you really pay 'X' (or trade 'X' worth in pins) to acquire it?

That being said, when someone offers me a trade that I consider lopsided, do I assume the other person knows what he/she is doing? It depends upon whether I think the person is very new and didn't know what he/she was doing or an experienced trader who was willing to overtrade. It also depends upon the pins in question and how drastically lopsided I consider the trade. A slight overtrade, fine, I would go with (after all, a pin's value is subjective); a moderate to drastic overtrade, I would say something and probably re-negotiate or decline the trade. After all, it comes down to not only what you can live with but your reputation as a trader. Besides, after all, what is it they say about something seeming too good to be true?
