Avoiding bad trades from pin pics

So I've noticed several people have had bad experiences trading on pinpics. What safety precautions can you take to try to avoid this? Or are you just at the mercy of who you are trading with?
 
I have traded there but honestly, I dont know how to avoid a "bad" trader... I have only done 2 and they were for low-value pins, so if the trade went bad, I would be annoyed, but not out too much.
 
I look for names I recognize either on Facebook or IG or here at DPF. Very few-- if any-- respond to requests for pinpics trades, which I find disappointing, esp when I recognize the name. If I get a trade request from someone whose name I don't recognize, I ask if they are on FB or IG and can we move the trade there, as it's much easier to exchange pictures. If it's someone I don't know or recognize, I always ask for photos of the pin before trading. HTH.
 
AFAIK, the PinPics staff has obtained the reference database from the old rnr-collectibles site and are currently working on integrating it with the PinPics site. I haven't heard any more than that for a long time though.

It's a lot more dicey trading without the reference center, but it can still be done. If no red-flags are immediately obvious, you can always ask the community if they know that person. In extreme cases where YOU are well-known but the other person isn't, you can ask them to send their pin first. Or you both could choose a well-known 3rd party to send your pins to first, who will then forward them on to the destination. I know docfish2u has previously said he'd be happy to do that, as well as other fine members of DPF

I have been able to make a couple nice trades through Pin Pics, but also find that many do not respond to requests. I have found that posting and trading here has really helped improve my reputation as an honest person to deal with (I hope) and find trades much easier to make. I think reputation of the requestee on pinpics is a big reason why many requests get ignored. If the ID is not known, few are willing to take the risk.

LOTS of Elliott pins still to trade for and acquire ... hopefully, i will find them all one day

I just joined PinPics a few weeks ago as well, and my trades have been pretty good so far. Now, that I'm a little more experienced, I ask them if they're on DPF. If not, could they send me hi-res pics. When examining the pics, I've found that some are scrappers and try to educate the person why I believe so. It was only my 2nd trade ever that I thought I might've gotten a scrapper, but after asking a more experienced trader on DPF, I'm pretty sure it's authentic.


How active is the forum on PinPics? I joined it cuz I thought I had to be a part of it for the Pins@Cost program; however, it didn't seem really active to me. I've made a post to ask questions and no one responded, so I just came back to DPF full time lol
 

Not very active. I'm there, under a different name because it was the Yuku Boards name I had chosen for when Dizpins was active.

The main people active are peachyshades (Linda), HoneyLemon, docfish2u (David), me (sometimes, lol), AvatarAng1, nom.inator (Gwen), GreyWyvern and a few others. Maybe a dozen active members there.

I actually signed up with the original PinTalk (when it wasn't part of Yuku Boards) first, before finding my way here to DPF (which I found out about on DISBoards)

Now, onto your original question, it's difficult to avoid a bad trade, other than the mantra, if it's too good to be true, it usually is.

The Pin Pics forum isn't very active, but it's my original forum and I love the people there. ^_^

The Yuku boards at the PinPics forums are a little less user-friendly than vBulletin here at DPF, so sometimes posts get missed. But people still post there! I find using the "Active Topics" button is the best way to see all the activity there.
 
If I am suspicious ,I usually check dpf and tell them I am on here too
i have not had a bad trade since I got back to pinpics ,u have to use your judgement
that's the only thing I can think of ,or ask if they have refs ,like the traders name and email ,then u can check

I have had mostly good pinpics tradee, though have had better luck with responding to trade requests vs. sending them (so even if the proposted trade isn't interesteing, I'llcompare traders and can often work something out).

I admit to pretty much ignoring it the last few months as life has gotten in the way of pin trading.
 
So far I've not had any bad trades. The only thing that I was annoyed about was having to pay £16 custom fee -_-.

Hello everyone I am new this forum... I have a question, I agreed to a trade with someone on PinPics (I'm not sure if I should say their name or not).
We talked over email and they asked if we wanted to trade multiple pins. But when I went to look for their account to check what pins we had in common, all of a sudden I cant find their account on Pin Pics.... it is like it doesnt exist. Did something happen?

I've made quite a lot of trades on pinpics through the years, including some quite recently. So I do still use the site regularly to look for trades. I think it has its merits and is worth using. At the very least, you can see what pins are sought after etc...
That being said, most of the trading I do now is through this site or various FB groups that I am a member of. Back in the day, before Facebook and the like, pinpics was one of the only ways to trade online (at least that I knew of).
There used to be a reference center too and that was a good way to check trading/selling history. That reference center hasn't been working for some time, although there was talk of getting access to the server. ..not sure what happened with that.
I want to say, in the last 5 or 6 years, it seems like pinpics members never even respond to a request. I wish people would go in and turn their settings off to show that they are not trading. I think a lot of members probably don't use pinpics as much anymore, or don't even trade now and forget that their pinpics account is active. Maybe they even have a new or different email address and never see the requests sent to them?
Now that there is iTrader here on the forum, hopefully we will get a reference database built up again that we can check. Make sure to tell everyone about it. I only learned of it recently.
One technique for ensuring a good trade is to use a moderator as a go between. You each send your pin to that person, who then mails it on to you. That way, if the other person does not ship the pin, you can still get yours back. Pretty much any honest trader should not have a problem with this system, unless they are overly concerned about postage costs. I would think though, that for a rare or hard to find pin, this would be an acceptable request on your part.
Also, ask for photos of the front and the back of the pin.
That being said, sometimes you just get unlucky even when you take all the precautions and there really is no sure fire way to vet every person you are going to trade with.

I think you are able to change your user name if you want. I seem to recall that I did this at some point so that my pinpics name matched my DPF name.

They may have been removed if there were complaints submitted against them for not going through with trades they set up through the Pinpics site (scamming people)...

 
This +infinity. It's impossible to guarantee avoiding a bad trade, but always listen to that little voice inside your head and use common sense; if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
 
I have made hundreds of trades through pinpics, it is the only way I know how to trade. I do miss the reference center and hope they get that incorporated into the site soon. In the 15+ years of my Pin Trading I have only had one bad experience and that was years ago. What I find more common now is someone contacts me for a trade, we agree on the pins, and then I never hear back from them. If they send out multiple requests, and get a better deal I wish they would tell me. When deciding who to trade with I pick people who are looking for more recent pins. It indicates that they are still keeping up with their account. Also, now that I am on both forums more frequently, I tend to look for names that I recognize from these sites.
 
Most of my trades have been through Pinpics, which has allowed me to obtain grails I never thought I could. I have however had one bad experience recently where I believe that I might've been scammed as I haven't received the pin which was meant to be sent a month ago and the user hasn't replied to my messages since I told them that I sent mine. However, that has been the sole blot on an otherwise fruitful trading experience provided by the site, I'll just have to be a bit more careful in future.
