How do you feel about breaking up pin sets? I have lots of pin sets that usually have one pin in them greatly wanted... The problem is I don't overly like breaking up the sets... How do you feel about that?

Break them up. If nobody did it then there would be a bunch of people who just want 1 pin of a set and no way to get it.

I agree, if someone wants the whole set and all the sets are broken, it's still possible for them to collect them all and reform the set, but if someone wants a single pin and none of the sets are broken, then we have a problem...
 
Unless it is a boxed or framed set (like, a super nice display) I say break it like a diet at a Christmas party. It is the only way I get some of my Stitch pins. Plus the thrill of the hunt to assemble a set (like my Wild about Safety collection I am working on) is fun too.

If it is a booster/starter set --> most definitely break it up
If it is a boxed set --> break it up
If it is a framed set --> I would consider all the pins in the set and make sure I wouldn't be stuck with half (or a few) of the pins left in the frame, making it impossible to display if I wanted to, but also hard to trade the rest of the pins.
 
Boxed sets, break them up. I agree with what has been said; a framed set might be harder to break, but if you can find people looking for those individual pins, go for it.

I agree with everybody, but at the same time, I am so picky with my sets. I always tell myself that I'm going to break them up, but there's something about sets that I love and I can't seem to break them apart. Its such a bad habit. T__T
 
Break them up. If you only want one pin from a set, why not use the rest for traders?

There are folks who specifically keep sets whole. They like the set together. BUT the overwhelming majority of pin collectors only like this or that pin from a set. Breaking it up gives people the chance to get their hands on that LE50 pin from the framed set.
 
The only reason some sets retain their value is the one pin. Take the one pin out and the others are worthless. I only break up a set if I really have to for a pin I really want. If they just pointed it out because they want it they better have something to make me break it up. I try to trade as a set. But if they aren't really that closely resembling each other I might. Once you break it up though you're bound to find the next person that says "Man I wish you had the whole set." haha.
 
I have trouble breaking up sets too. I believe they are more valuable when kept together. Like Mark said above, sometimes if you break up the set and the most valuable one goes, you can't get rid of the rest. It is hard to trade for whole sets, but it is easier to sell them if you can't trade them.
