Barkeeper's Friend, a sponge, and some gentle scrubbing. I've had great results and no damage.

I use the powder stuff in a can....probably less than $2 at the store. Just make a little paste and clean with a sponge or gently with an old toothbrush...that really gets in all the little nooks and crannies. I've revived several old pins this way.
