So the last time I went to Disney World was Christmas of 2009. Sadly when I went I had forgotten my pins back at home. Anyway I decided to buy myself a few pins to trade with.

One cast member was super kind and traded right away with me. Then a few hours later I went into a store and a cast member had a pin that I REALLY wanted, and she would not trade with me.

She said that my pin was not equal to the pin I wanted. I asked why and she said she was busy and told me to go.

I was appalled and walked right out.

Every trade that I have had with a cast member was great and they are usually so friendly.

Note: she was not wearing a child's lanyard.

Are there new rules for trading, that I missed?

Wow! That's horrible. A cast member has to trade with you no matter how great the "cast member's" pin is. They belong to Disney and not them. You are allowed two trades per cast member, per person, per day. They should have traded with you. I'm sorry this happened.
 
I'm sorry to hear this happen to you, as a former CM I know that there aren't any new rules thus far and as such you can only do a pin for a pin, anyone displayed on her lanyard is fair game. That said you can decide to complain: offer name, park, area, and if possible role that said Cast Member was from and they can get talked with possible consequences to by management. I have only heard about this happening at Disneyland Paris but even still.
 
I probably should have complained but I was just ashamed about what had happened plus my family was waiting for me.
 
Can cast members use private lanyards/pins while on duty? If so, could that have been the case as to why they would not have done the trade?
 
Wow, that sucks. They have to trade, no matter what. If they have their own personal keepers, they should not be displaying them! Sorry to hear this.
 
Aye happened to me in Paris on a few occasions, I wanted to get the pascal from the booster set and the woman went no not that one cant trade that, I asked why and she said she wants to trade for it later which I thought was rude. Paris does have quite a few rude cast members when I went on my first trip. So it happens everywhere and I did complain a few days later as the same CM was rude to another UK trader I met over there.

WHAT???? NO, they cannot do that! CMs have a lot of leeway about why or why they won't trade (ultimately it's up to them), but that is NOT an accepted Disney reason! Are you sure it was a CM???????

And no, CMs can wear their own pins on their costume (and they don't have to trade, because it's their personal pin), but ANY pin on a lanyard is NOT their personal pin, it belongs to DISNEY, unless they have an acceptable (Disney) reason, they are obligated to trade with you! And you should not be ashamed of anything, that CM is an A--HOLE!
 
The only other time a cast member said not to trade with them was because I had an really limited pin(was really young at the time) and she said that she would feel bad giving me a plain pin when I could keep the rare one. I later traded that pin for a holy grail
 
WoW, I never heard of such a thing ! Cast Members are not allowed to wear private lanyards and are suppose to trade with you from their lanyards . The pins belong to Disney and are distributed to the CM's to trade . The only pins they don't trade are worn on their shirt collars, such as how many years they have been employed . Unbelieveable, sorry this happened to you .
 
It may not have been a cast member. Last time I was at the parks, at Animal Kingdom there was a man walking around with a lanyard and his outfit looked like the cast members outfits. People kept going up to him and asking to see his pins - I almost did myself - before realizing he was not a cast member.
 
There are actually pins that can be worn as part of the costume, certain pins such as the american flag and special pins such as2010 voluntear pins worn opposite side of the name badge.
 
I get mistaken for a cast member quite often. Not sure why but it's probably the lanyard. However, when that happens I explain that I do enjoy trading with people but that I am not a cast member. When they hear I am not a cast member people sometimes withdraw. I then ask what pin they are looking for and what they want to trade. If it's possible I trade, because I love helping other people complete their sets.
 
Some cm have there personal collection on them.. I've had that same problem but she was nice about it they only have to trade the pins give to them each day.
 
I know there is a cast member on Main Street at Disneyland that is doing just this to guests. He is decked out in a ton of pins that you normally don't see cast members with as many as this guy has. He also has some Disney "items" that he has acquired from Company D and is trying to trade those items to guests for pins. I've reported him to his lead once but he's still in the park doing it. Next time I see him, I'm going to ask someone else in the area for their manager. I don't think it's a bad thing if he were to wear that many pins to trade with people (as long as they are Disney's) and not his & Disney's rules, not his.

I've never heard of anyone else doing it though and I just think what you ran into was a bad apple, and don't let that stop you from trading with cast members

When trading with Cast Members, Guests should offer a pin that is not already displayed on the Cast Member's lanyard.
 
Shane, that's horrible, if I still lived in SoCal I'd ask you to point this (unusual) jerk CM out and complain to their Lead or Manager too! :rant:
 
That's a shame. I go to the WDW parks and Downtown Disney regularly to trade pins and I have never been refused a trade by a cast member. The only rule or guideline that I am aware of that may cause a CM to refuse a trade is if you are offering the CM a pin he/she already has on their lanyard. But even than, their is no need for a CM to be rude about it. Hopefully the experience didn't tarnish the rest of your day or trip to Disney. I guess even Disney cast members have "off" days once in awhile !!
 

Pin Trading at Disneyland Paris is governed by different rules than trading at the US Parks.

1) Hidden mickey / white glove / gift with purchase pins (from the guest) may only be traded for similiar pins

2) Regular pins (from guest) may only be traded for other regular pins or hidden mickey pins

3) Limited edition pins (from guest) may only be traded for other LE pins / regular pins / hidden mickey

I have also heard reports that cast members at the Paris park are more knowledgable about counterfeit pins and will not knowingly accept them. (I'll leave it so someone who has had the pleasure of trading at Disneyland Paris to confirm the final statement. The pin "class" restriction is well known now just like being unable to trade pins at the Tokyo Disneyland and Disneysea parks.

From the sounds of things, you may have encountered someone who formerly worked at the Paris park.

I have only traded in UK stores with cast members, but on one occasion the cast member did say to me that she would only trade LE for LE because otherwise she would end up with just rubbish on her lanyard and no LE's - which I found to be a pretty fair statement.

On our last trip to WDW, we had a ADR at Cinderella's Royal Table. After we checked in, I saw a CM who was working at CRT and she had this pin
on her dress. I asked her to trade, but she said it wasn't a "trader". I was bummed, but I didn't give her a hard time about it. Still think she should have traded, but oh well...
 


Again the key phrase here is on her dress. Cast members may wear pins that are part of their uniform or the occasional personal pin. Pins that are part of their uniform are specifically not for trade. Sometimes cast members are given pins in recognition of working on a holiday, special event, or more rarely they may choose to wear a personal pin that is not for trade.
 
I had this happen to me once. I was stalking this guy for a Roger Rabbit pin he had. (I'm not a creep, just wanted the pin really bad) and I saw him trade it with a cast member, and I had a roger rabbit double i had bought on purpose. So I went up to the Cast memeber to trade and I got declined. He wasn't rude or anything, he wasn't wearing a child's lanyard, he just declined. It might've been he was changing shifts or something but I walked by two hours later he was still there. My Pin was gone but the CM was still at his stupid little Register. I felt weird afterward and didn't trade for the rest of my stay
 
Gotta say that if this happened to me, I would ask for a manager right away.

If you're following the rules and haven't already traded 2 pins with a CM, stop that CM right then and there and ask for a manager.
