Looking for some help in cleaning up some older pins. I just bought a lanyard's worth of older pins. When they arrived (still on the lanyard) it looks like at some point it was wet, or in a high moisture environment. A couple of the pins have dark stains and green stains, almost like a patina on the back. The fronts are still looking great, so I'm thinking it's the constant exposure to the lanyard and time.

I'd be less than enthusiatic to receive these in a trade, so I'd like to clean up the ones I don't plan on keeping.

Any suggestions on how and what to use? I tried soap and water on one and got some things off, but I think I need a stronger cleaner, but obviously don't want to harm the pin.

Thanks

I also have the green stuff on the back of a couple pins and would love to know how to get it off.. I tried baking soda and also a lime away type product with no luck

I am not sure about the pins you have but I have one of those jewelry cleaning cloths that has two cloths in one. One that cleans, one that shines. It does work pretty good in cleaning up pins to make them look better. It comes in a red box.

I had a pin with gold metal areas that were so tarnished it looked like the gold-coloured surface had rubbed off. I used Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and it looks good as new. I've used the same stuff to polish pins with light surface scratches.
