Why has Disneystore.com stopped producing mystery sets?

Those were some of my favorite sets to buy, especially trying to get that rare LE 50 or 25 pin.

In my opinion disneystore.com has gone downhill in the past six months. I can't even remember the last time they had a surprise release of a sought after pin on the store

You're preaching to the choir...

No one really knows *why* ds.com stopped doing their regular stuff this year. A couple of theories have been floated around- the move of their warehouse, the 110th series taking up too much of their time/attention, the old series weren't selling well enough, etc.

I, too, loved the mystery sets...but they seemed to go downhill after 2008, and it did seem like they had a lot left over to clearance out. Of course, once they went to LE 500 from LE 1,000, it seemed to fix that problem.

Regardless, I saved a BUNCH of money this year, but purchased almost no pins. Next year, I'm hoping for a happy medium...an awesome pin every month or so.

.
Now that you mention it, I too saved an awful lot of money on pins this year! I probably saved over a $1000!
Just nothing interested me.
The ONLY pins I purchased from DisneyStore.com this year were the 110th Legacy pins just with Walt. And I did like the Piece of Movie History pins.
But becasue I didn't like Florida Project pins at all I didn't go or even try and buy.
Yes...I sure did save alot this year!

I really miss the wonderful pins of the past ~ and Rebekah and I always had a blast with the Mystery pin sets!
So sad over no Tink As ....... pins this year

i just saw you name and had to say how cool it is....sorry...i didnt get any ds pins and dont know much about it.... but i know its cool to blame this pin habbit on ur mom. I can only blame my self...lol but its ok cuz im fine with my pin-a-holics classes. we still meet on sundays at western ho....lol

I agree a bit about saving money...although with all the Cars 2 releases, I didn't do quite as well as some of you. I can remember the day when I bought EVERY week and spent at least $50 to $100 weekly (some were for traders) and on some weeks (mystery sets & LE 100 six pin sets) spent closer to $250. This year I think there were two or three low edition sets (Carriages, Kaleiscopes and D23 train) and I was in a co-op for all three so that I ended up with only the ones I wanted. I don't think there has been a mystery set at all and I bought maybe 20 of the 110th pins (just the ones from my collections), very few holiday pins (again only my characters and most of those were just blah) -- the ones I've liked the best were the two pin sets for Cars 2 and those were only so-so in my opinion. I sure haven't gotten up at 2:00 am very often because it just wasn't necesssary....not even for Halloween ones this time and that's kind of sad. Who knows in 2012 I may not even bother with DS.com pins at all...

In my opinion the Soda Fountain pins coming out in the next 2 months and pretty much the whole year have been much better than anything on Disneystore.com

Yep, pretty much!

In fact, if it weren't for the Soda Fountain, something like 95% of my pin purchases this year would have been retired pins off eBay. No pins at Florida Project, a few pins from DLR, all the Duffy pins, like...3 pins from Love is Magical- and all the DSF Jessicas. That's it.

Only my opinion, of course, but it SEEMS like Disney is much more interested in pushing Vinylmations lately, and the pin output is heading south. Very few good ideas lately- except for Movie history and Walt's legacy. Soda fountain have been good also. I saw alot of what I would call [sorry, Disney. Junk.] We shall see what 2012 brings.

As someone who was never a fan of Mystery boxes, I don't miss them at all. I have never bought a Mystery box and gotten a pin I want. I am firmly in the "I wanna know what I am buying" fan club!

Awww, did you not go through a trading card phase? I love the rush of not knowing what you're getting! Yeah, it's disappointing when you don't get a special one, but the feeling when you pull a LE 100 (or lower)...there's nothing like it! And Disney pins usually trade well no matter what (unlike trading cards and CCGs), so even the "bad" pins trade well.

Also, I don't have the pulling power that some of my friends have! I've done okay on LE 100s, but I have a friend who pulled several LE 50s (three that I can think of off the top of my head) over the years DS.com was doing them.

I did, in fact, go through a trading card phase. But I went through it, survived it, and moved on. And remember, for every one of you finding that LE 50, there are a bunch of me not getting so lucky.

By the way, I still have boxes full of those trading cards so if you want them they are yours for free; just pay the postage. 8^)

I've always wondered one thing about the mystery sets. Do you think being part of the mystery sets makes the higher LE (450, 500) pin much less valuable than other LE 500? It seems like those pins are instantly treated as worthless because almost everybody who gets them doesn't want them and there becomes a glut of traders. Or is it just me?

LOL! That made me really laugh.

I suppose if I *never* got anything good, I would be over it, too.

...nah. I just like the little thrill too much. It's like mini-Christmas.

What types ya' got? ~_^

I find, as with most series, it's about the pin. Do I still have, like, 3 Robin Hood Christmas pins? Yeah. But I traded my last Tink Witch longggggggg ago. I think there was a wide array of desirability in these sets....

When I said "still good", I meant it in the sense that I can at least do *something* with it, unlike trading cards...even if that something is just putting it on a board at an event and getting an AP for it.

I would love a Mystery Set release. I've only been in the hobby for about a year, so I largely missed out on DS.com Mystery Sets.

If you guys are really wondering why the DS pin assortment has changed, and among other things has made a casualty of the Mystery Sets, I can sort of explain.

It's called 'restructuring', and Disney loves to do it. I was there way back in '02 when they first sold the stores off to The Children's Place, which was confusing to everyone in the organization. I can only imagine how confusing it was to the customers. Back then there was also Disney Direct, Disney Auctions, and Disney Shopping. We even ran a little pin business through eBay. Long story short, it took many years of restructuring and more restructuring to bring the stores back into the fold, and streamline everything back into Disney Stores (retail, website, catalog). When I left in '09, the catalog was a memory and the merger with stores was still taking place, while at the same time a new management team was trying to change the brand of Disney Store. The online team moved into the same building with the stores team last year, and I think the catalog has returned in a smaller, mailer form.

I was the merch manager for pins until 2007, and there was one more after me when I moved to marketing. But she's gone now, and from what I don't think they have anyone on the team devoted to developing and producing pins anymore. We worked with a vendor right down the street from concept to design to production. Parks always had a much more massive pin business then us, but that sort of worked in our favor, as I could sneak some designs straight into production (I don't think anyone would've approved Jessica in Jamaica or in Rio at Carnival). But now, since there's no merch manager on the team dedicated to just pins, the person who is managing collectibles handles it, and I think they only get to pick from certain options, as opposed to sitting down and coming up with ideas for weekly and monthly releases.

Anyway, I doubt anyone has even read this far, but if you have, and want more details, I'm an open book about my time with the Mouse.

I thought that with cutting back certain positions would not be filled. Sad, but true.

Thank you for the great details, Dave. :)
