I get paid on April 1 and someone is holding a pin (not on this site) for me that I plan to get when I get paid. I plan to pay with PayPal. Does PayPal protect me if something happens, even though it's not through eBay?

Yes, but only if you pay as "goods". You will have the option when sending money to pay as a "Service" (where goods is listed) or "Personal." For payments concerning "services", the seller is charged fees. For payments concerning "Personal", the seller is not charged fees. I beleve all personal payments do not have paypal protection.

On occasion (depending on where you buy from) some will request to be paid as "gift" (which is under the "Personal" payment options), because they don't want to incur paypal fees on their end. You can opt to pay the fees that they would have had to (this calculator can help calculate what the fees would be), and still pay as goods. This way the person selling you the pin will still get the money they were expecting, and you are still protected through paypal in the event that things don't go as planned.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! How do I pay as goods? Sorry I'm kind of new to this, haha.

Oh no worries! I realized that may be the case, so I edited my post. But just in case that still isn't clear (give Story a few times, and she'll be clear enough to follow :lol here's how to:

- Click on the "Send Money" tab at the top of the screen when you open your account.

- Type in the Seller's Paypal Address in the "to" box

- Type in the total you will be paying them in the "amount" box

- There will then be two tabs: "Purchase" and "Personal". Click on the "Purchase" tab and click the "Goods" option.

- From there it will take you to the page to confirm your payment, and you should be set!

Never mind I figured out how to pay as goods. Thanks

ETA: Oh good and no problem! ;D

Thank you so much for that calculator! That makes things so much easier!

Fee is slightly different in that there is additional conversion fee added (I think).

Also, personal payments made with a credit card still incur a fee (so might as well send as goods).
