I am a Chicago area pin trader and I will be visiting Southern California for spring break. I see that pins will be released on April 1st and I have figured out from previous discussions that people line up and are given wristbands or something. Can you guys explain to me how this all works? Where do you park? When do they actually start to sell the pins? Can you buy one of each one, or are you allowed only two or three pins total. Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks

Go to the DSSH facebook page. Look under the Photos for rules on past pin releases. Toward the end of March, they will post on facebook the rules for the April 1 pin release.

Here is the basic lowdown on DSF/DSSH. Details can vary between releases, such as cutoff time and number of sets able to be purchased, but in general, this is how it goes:

~ Each release will have a sales time posted on the flyer. There is also a separate cutoff time, which is generally an hour to an hour and a half earlier than the posted time. You need to be in line with a wristband no later than this cutoff time - NOT the sales time. (As btown said, this cutoff time will be posted in the rules sheet that DSF puts out a few days before the release). Once they know how many people have shown up, they will put that many numbered tickets into a big raffle drum. Once they have the drum set up, people file through in the line and will receive a random numbered ticket from the drum (so you could be first in line and get number 200, or the last in line and get number 15). These tickets determine purchase order - the person with ticket number 1 will get to purchase first, the person with ticket number 10 will get to purchase tenth, etc. Once the sales time hits, they will open the shop and sell the release pins (as well as PTD pins, and chocolate and other merchandise).

~ The best place to park is directly across the street at the Hollywood and Highland shopping center. There is a big multi-level parking lot underneath the shopping center. With validation from the El Capitan theater, you can park for $2 for up to 2 hours with DSF validation and up to 4 hours with El Capitan validation. At the vast majority of pin releases they'll leave a door open so you can validate from the theater and get the four hours of parking.

~ They will specify how many sets each person can purchase in the rules, but generally it is one or two sets per person. You are allowed to buy each individual pin design in a set (so for the Villains release, if they limit to one set per person you can buy one Gaston, One Hades, one Cruella, one Yzma, and one Jafar; if you can buy two sets you can get two of each of the five pins). You can only buy one of any surprise pin that comes out, even if you can buy two sets of the previewed pins.

I haven't been able to check Facebook yet, cannot do it from school, but am glad you posted. The flyer says 6 am, so does that generally mean that they will start to sell the pins by 6, and we will have to be in line by 4 or 4:30? Do they do this so you don't interfere with the regular DSSH customer? I can't believe you guys do this every time they put out pins. What dedication!

Correct. If the flyer release time says 6am, then the cutoff time will be either 4:30 or 5, and actual sales will start at 6. I'm guessing for this release the cutoff time will be 5. They use the hour in between cutoff and sale time to get the numbers prepared and distributed and the first 50 or so people set in line.

And yes, they do it so early so they have time to sell the pins and clear out the crowd before normal business hours and before Hollywood Boulevard gets busy with tourists, shoppers, and movie-goers.

Do people do any pin trading in line, or are most people there to get the pins to sell on Ebay or doing pick-ups for friends. I don't plan to bring alot of pins to California, but I would bring some if I could pre-arrange some trades.

People do trade in line (I usually see at least one or two people with pin trading bags), though I feel that it's often trades that are prearranged. I don't usually show up much before 15 minutes before cutoff and am always towards the end of the line down the street, so I don't know how much trading goes on ahead of the release while people are waiting in the esplanade.

If they post a cutoff time for wristbands plan to be there well ahead of that time, as if you are one minute past that time you will not get a wristband. And there clock might not match yours exactly. I only ever went twice and the second time i missed the wristbands by about a minute :(. It takes time to get your car parked and walk over to wherever the line has stretched out too. ;)

Also you might want to be aware that this isn't the safest place in the world. If you have a friend that would be willing to come along that is a bonus, that will give you an extra chance of a good raffle number and hopefully some safety in numbers. But that's just my impression of the local and what shows up on the news from that area as well.

I plan to bring my sister along. Hopefully one of us will get a good number. I would really hate to get up early, drive all the way to store, and not be able to get any pins. That must really suck!

Even if you get a bummer number there is usually still some pins left at the end that people with lower numbers didn't want. But it just depends on the set ;) Hope you get great numbers and have a good time :)

DSF posted the rules for this release today.

The cutoff time is 5am, so you need to be in line by 5 am at the absolute latest. The limit is 1 per person, which means one set, or one each of whichever character(s) you want. If you and your sister both get a low number, you can each purchase one of each pin.

Good luck!

I occasionally will have a pre-trade set up for when I'm at DSSH. However, I do bring my pin bags with me in case I have an opportunity to trade with others.

Thank you for posting the rules. We will try to be there on time, but we are staying at Newport Beach and I understand we might be at least an hour and a half away, so it will be a long night. We will be at Disneyland on Thursday night, maybe we should just hang around the park as late as possible and then make our way to store. When do people generally start getting in line; when do they give out the wristbands, and can you ever leave the line?

I show up in line @3:00am and there are people their already. From Newport take the 405 N to the 110 N to the 101 west exit Hollywood bvld. head west for a couple of miles you will see people lined up in front of the store.I always bring a fold up chair.Things take a long time its nice to have a seat with you. Watch out for the creepy people on Hollywood blvd.Alot of them have been up all night...

I believe the line "officially" starts at midnight, I have no idea what time wristbands start to be handed out. And yes, you are allowed to leave the line and come back.

Well we got there around 4:30 am, got our wristbands and waited in line. Pretty low key crowd. When they handed out the numbers we were told that 341 people were in line, my sister got 210 and I got 331☹️. While we waited to buy pins, I mentioned to some people that I had a high number and somebody who decided not to buy the pins gave me their lower number. Thank you so much! So we were both able to buy a set of pins. I traded with some people outside and inside the store, bought other pins and even got a sundae and the PTD. A little disappointed there was no special April Fools day pin, and that they did not flip the PTD's even though they only had Vidia left when I purchased. All in all, a successful venture, but left me pretty tired for the rest of the day.
