Just got the email that said trading boards only allow for 4 "tabs" or trades. Is this going to be enough to keep us busy all day? It's our first event and I feel like we might get bored. I just want to try to pre-plan, should we be planning on the event actually going until the end, or that we will be leaving early?
 
this is the first year that they have had this rule so honestly I don't know, I feel like the answer is going to be a big fat no, in the past I have spent all day in line to trade at the boards, usually going through at least twice as many times as we are being allowed this year. I am hoping that they have something else planned that they haven't told us about yet to fill our time!!
 
Yay! I finally get to do the boards! I've always had to pass...they took up too much time when my main priority was trading with fellow traders in the room. But with the tab system, maybe the lines won't be so bad! I guess time will tell. People on Facebook be actin' like it's the end of the world, tho.

As with anything, the event will be what you make of it. If you're literally only there for board trading, then yeah, it's going to be a rough on for you.

I still have yet to hear...do they consider the "games" as "boards", or will they be separate from the tab system since there's no real selection process?
 
There is a LOT to do and see besides the Trade Boards!!

Trading in the back section with fellow Traders from all over the World can take up the whole 2 days alone!! There are the displays from the other "Disney Pin Partners", the Pin Games and entertainment at the Stage, the Silent Auction displays, the Pin Store, lining up to get pins signed by the Disney Artists, meeting up and talking with old and new Pin Friends.........

Plus you can always "Take a Break" and step outside to the World Showcase to eat "in another Country"!!

I have done the Trade Board lines every year and have usually only managed to get through 5 or 6 times a day so, 4 isn't so bad (like Abyssinian28 says - the Event is what you make of it)!!

I only managed to get through the lines 4 times last year because they were so long so I don't mind at all. I prefer to trade in the trading room. When else will you get a chance to trade with people from all over.

I agree...the opportunity to trade with such a variety of traders, is what this is about. And also, Disney is including six pins, that we would normally be looking for on the trade boards... So, adding that to the vouchers and it make an equivalent of ten vs just the four vouchers...
 
I'll argue that some of us go to events primarily to do the boards. I collect APs and PPs of pins that fit my theme and the times that I went to the event, I found more of those on the boards for my collection than I found anything I needed in the trade room. Granted, my wants list was limited - and now even more ridiculously so. But I loved doing the boards as often as possible - for APs and PPs and not for the event pins because those never fit my collecting theme - and that was my main purpose at the events I attended - to expand my collection and I did so primarily from the boards. So, different pin purposes for different folks. Four board trades per day when that's your primary goal is just... awful.
 
us we are going to see what happens and how i plays out this year, if you read your rules they are doing the countdown pin again for next year too, am not happy with that this one was very hard to get since we don't live near the parks and anyone that goes to the releases charges way to much to get one for you, so overall will see what happens
 
We don't trade with other people because we are afraid of scrappers. We haven't mastered the art of telling the difference yet, so I wanted to trade with the boards. Hopefully the games will take up some time.

Just a heads up, that many of the traders that go to the event take fakes to trade to the boards. Be careful.
 
So, as a newbie, I have no idea what this event is, was or looks like. Can someone help a new trader out and explain? From reading other threads, this is a multi-day event centered on Pin Trading with thousands of people attending. I think it's held in Epcot, somewhere in the World Showcase? What is so special about trading at the "boards" and why is there muchado about the new tab system limiting attendees to 4 trades per day? In my experience trading off the boards in the parks, they usually don't have very good pins on the boards and many of the ones they DO have for trade are fakes/scrappers/unauthorized. Hence my confusion. I would think it would be more productive to trade with other people at the event vs the boards. Do they have pins for sale at this event as well? Limited Editions? Special releases?
 
In reply to McMorgan, the appeal of the event for many is to trade on the boards. If you are near the front of the line when the board is refreshed you can find a wealth of pins. Some are AP(artist proof) pins, and some are hidden mickeys. In the past we traded to get more of the event pins that could not be bought. Last year I got a set of hidden mickeys from Hong Kong that were quite cute. I also got some nice LE Hong Kong anniversary pins. It is not at all like trading at the boards in the park. Yes, some people put on scrapper pins, but Disney puts on a lot of nice pins. Sometimes there are just so many pins to look at that you miss something really great. n
 

Hi! Let's see if I can sum this up...

This event is pretty much THE big pin event for pin traders. It's held every year, usually in early September, which is why it's called the September Event often. Every year, Disney does a different theme (this year is GenEARation D). It used to be a 4 day event, starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday, but it's gone through many transformations over the years. This year, it will only be until Saturday. You are correct, it's held inside the World Showcase, between Canada and England, and is affectionately referred to as "Iceland".

The event is inside a small events center, and is divided into 2 major areas...the main room, and the trading room. The trading room is basically what you'll find at any given PTN, but what makes it better is that traders come from all over the world, so you're trading with different people. The main room hosts the stage (which hosts talks and games), pin partner booths for future releases, the store (if they have one that year, they don't always), the auction lots for the silent auction, and the infamous boards (more on those at the end).

Before the event starts, they release a catalog with merchandise made specifically for the event. We fill out a Wants list of the ones we like, and they do a computer generated draw system (a RSP) and let us know what we've been selected to buy. We pick up the pins when we pick up our registration.

So, the boards. Basically, you get in line, and the boards are turned away from you. When it's your turn, you get a minute to hunt, then give your two pins and take the two pins you want. When the events were younger (like, maybe 2007), the boards took about 30 minutes to stand in line for, and you had a good chance of getting junk. A couple of years ago, Disney overhauled the boards to load them up with AP and PP pins, as well as a mystery series you could only find on the boards. The wait time in the lines increased, and now it's 45 minutes if you're lucky, and can be as long as over an hour.

So this year, to combat the long line waits, Disney has implemented a tab system. Basically, you get 4 goes in line a day. The people who go to the event specifically for the boards are ticked off (understandable, if that's your thing). I honestly don't get the appeal of waiting for over an hour to trade for two pins when you could do much better in the room, but I'm also a firm believer in people doing what they love. I suspect it's a "thrill of the hunt" thing.

People like me are the ones who benefit from this new system, if it works. I go mainly to trade in the room, so I've always had to pass on the boards because they sucked up too much time. Well, that, and in the early years when I did the boards, I waited all that time and got crap. Very discouraging. Now, assuming it does help the wait time (we'll see about that), than I'll be able to do them.

Lavendersunrise, I was a little baffled at your comment about not trading with people because you're afraid of scrappers. Your chances of getting a scrapper is far, far higher trading on boards and lanyards at the parks than trading with traders. The people who buy scrappers (knowingly or unknowingly) usually buy them to dump on lanyards and boards. So when it's your turn, you don't know if you're getting a pin from Disney, or someone's leavings. Unless you're a Hidden Mickey collector, it's much easier to spot a trader who trades in scrappers. Hidden Mickeys, you're just out of luck. Prepare for a lifetime of checking your pins and still not knowing. It's why I generally don't collect them, and if I do, I buy the packs.

If you just feel more secure trading with Disney directly, I get that. But please do be aware of the scrapper situation you're likely facing on boards and cast lanyards. Good hunting!

we have stopped trading in the parks for that reason. I'm so torn, in ready to have two collections the fun trade in the park scrapper collection and the expensive collection. But I don't want to be the person who knowingly trades scrappers. It's a lose-lose!
 

Where scrappers and cast lanyards are concerned, it really is a lose-lose! It's a shame, because for a lot of families, that's the fun of pin trading...the hunt on lanyards. I do agree with you keeping your expensive collection separate, no matter what. You don't have to dump expensive pins OR scrappers back on lanyards- you can find legit traders for under $3 (at the outlets, clearance pins, GWP, and some trusty traders that sell lots). Disney used to have SALSA sales for cast members and friends of cast...the pins there were, like, 80% off. So some sellers still have those pins and sell them off in cheap lots. 100% authentic, and usually under $2 a pin. But I would ask around, just to make sure you're not dealing with a scrapper seller.

I don't want to totally hijack this thread away from discussing the Event, but do want to comment that you are absolutely right about the effects on families regarding scrappers and fakes on lanyards and boards. We are fortunate that we have a Disney Outlet store about an hour away that occasionally receives overstock pins from the parks. I check a couple of times a year and try to build up some traders for my daughters. However it kills me when we get to the park and they trade what I *know* to be authentic pins for what I *suspect* to be fakes. (based on rough edges, no waffle pattern on the back, Hidden Mickey series, general feel of the pin, etc...) I try to rein it in and let them trade and have fun (that's the whole point, right?) but it is very discouraging.

I wish disney could start banning people who bring scrappers to the park. Like give one warning and then start banning them from trading. Obviously this isn't ever going to happen because it will be a logistically nightmare. I CAN'T knowingly give away a good pin for a "most likely" bad one. It makes me ill.

I have no idea what will happen when my son is old enough to want to trade.

Thanks for the summary - this will be our first event also, so not sure what to expect! Mostly looking forward to seeing all kinds of pins I probably don't know exist, and finding new things for our collections!

(I'll have on the Mickey ears safari hat with pins on it - everyone find us and introduce yourself and trade with us!)
 

That's pretty much what happened to us during our first event! We wandered around and found a TON of pins we didn't even know existed...older Disney Auction pins and LE 100s and such. It was a little overwhelming, but also a lot of fun! Had to seriously bulk up my traders by the next one, though. LOL!
 

I do not understand why people like to go trade off the boards either as most of the pins on the boards will be fakes and scrappers. I go to trade pins with other people and I tend to make good trades so that is why I go.
