An app. You can create groups. Back when I had a flip phone and a slider phone (non-smart phone - ugh, remember those with real keyboards?!), the person with the smart phone could add members with their phone numbers. So, that's how I was added in. Then every night, I would message the group leader and ask them to silence it for the night
Ughhh I tried to join but it wont let me make an account. Says my phone number is not valid even though I put it in the right way and choose Sweden and so on. Well I guess I will try again later. Irritating!

hmm.. i guess fundamentally, you don't need an app to be part of a GroupMe chat. Not everyone uses facebook.. but maybe facebook chat doesn't require an account either? Anyway, GroupMe is very basic and doesn't really have too many features.. besides the "heart/ like" button.
