Got my first trade offer on Pinpics, need some tips

So I just got my first-ever trade request on Pinpics, and I'm not too sure how to proceed. I'm hesitant to name the person making the request, as it seems naming folks seems to be generally frowned upon here, but I want to try and find out how to see what kind of a reputation someone has before agreeing to a trade over the internet. What's the best way to go about researching someone that wants to trade with you (that did make an offer of a pin I want), before deciding to accept or decline the trade? I tried looking for the person's pinpics name here on DPF, but they either aren't a member here or have a different username here. Is it ok to ask (using the person's pinpics name) other members here if they've had any dealings with this person, and whether or not they are reputable? If not, is there any way to research a person's reputation based on their pinpics name?

Thanks for any tips or help with this. I've literally only traded a few times (with cast members and other guests on-property, so it was always in person), and I'm obviously a bit nervous about agreeing to a trade, sending out a pin, and then not getting the promised pin in return, so I just don't know where to go from here.

PS: Mods - If this is in the wrong section, I apologize, I just wasn't sure which section to post this to, so I thought the Pins Discussion area seemed the most appropriate.

Use their email address and look them up in the DizPins reference center: http://www.rnrcollectables.com/referencemain.htm

There is a "Check References" after the top section. You can see who they have traded with and when. You can always as for references and ask them if they use DPF. The key to good experiences so don't be afraid to ask questions or state terms of the trade. For example make sure you agree to exchange tracking numbers so you can monitor the package in transit. When you both will mail since some people will delay the mailing out and can cause some "nervousness" on your end.

If any feels wrong or off, just don't do it. You should feel comfortable with the person and the trade.

If you are trading high end pins you can always use a go between. I have heard the mods here can help you with that as can I. I have done it for a couple of people before. The way it works is both parties send their pins to a trusted person. Then when both packages are received and verified to be the pins expected and they are in good condition then that person sends them on to the traders. Generally speaking if somebody is not willing to do that with high end pins I would be very leery about trading with them.

Thanks for the info, docfish2u. I checked his email through the link that rif-raf posted, and he's got a *lot* of references going back to 2001 (more than I could be bothered to count.) We are both trading LE pins, and even though we'll be mailing each other the pins, it turns out he's actually local to me (so I doubt he'd want me knocking on his door if he doesn't follow through with his end of the deal lol.) Plus the pin I'm sending (though it is LE) is still currently easy for me to replace as a trader (as it's one of the Food and Wine Mickey recipe card pins, which I'll probably just pick up another one for trading when I'm at Epcot this weekend.) So I'm going to send him the pin and hopefully he'll send the promised pin in return, but considering his high number of references over many years, I think it will be a safe trade. I would think if anything, he'd be more nervous about me not following through, as I have no references as I've never traded online before, and the pin he's sending me can really only be purchased (at quite a markup) on ebay. He said he'd mail it out on Monday, so I should have it by the end of next week (and I'll be heading to the post office to mail the pin to him on Saturday before heading to Epcot.) So I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly. Thanks again for the advice, as an intermediary might be a good way to go if I do any more trading online if the person doesn't already have what appears to be a very solid reputation.

Generally speaking you would use the intermediary on higher end pins. I have traded for over 14 years now on pinpics and have had very few issues. Maybe 1 percent. I can't speak for the other methods like facebook, but have had very good success using pinpics. But since I won't use the new pinpics(personal choice) I will be very happy when Darris gets his new database up and running.

Thanks again for the info, docfish2u! I really have only been using pinpics as a way to keep track of what I have, what I want, and what I'm willing to trade, and figured it would be useful if I traded with anyone from DPF. I really don't see me trading through facebook, but am hoping things work out well with the trade through pinpics. I don't have many wants, or many traders yet as I'm still new to pin collecting and trading, but when I got offered a pin I really want for a pin that I bought specifically for trading (as I'm planning on attending the next meet-up at All Star Sports in October, and wanted at least *something* that someone might want in exchange for one of the pins I'm looking for), I figured it was worth taking the chance of trading online. If it all works out, I should have 3 of the 5 pins in the Mechanical Kingdom set that have been released so far (there's still 1 more to be released, but as it's a surprise release, I just have to keep checking the pin locations at WDW until the last one in the set releases.) I'm both excited and nervous about my first online trade, but will be extremely happy if it all works out.

Are they members here ?? If so maybe they have refs ,if not reccommend them to join,it would not hurt a bit
good luck

Hi tiggermickey,

If they are members here, then they're using a different name than they're using on pinpics. I did tell them that I was on here, and that it was the same name as I use on pinpics, but he didn't respond as to if he was on here or not. In any case, I shipped out my end of the trade to him on Saturday, and according to the tracking, he should have gotten it earlier this afternoon, and when we first set up the trade, he said he wouldn't be able to ship out until today, so I'm not expecting anything until around the end of the week. But where he did have a huge list of references (and I had none, as this was my first online trade), I figure at least at this point (or whenever he gets home today), he'll know that I'm on the up-and-up, as the pin I was to send (Mickey recipe card from this year's Food and Wine Festival) has been delivered. Now it's just keeping my fingers crossed that he sends me the pin he promised (Mechanical Kingdom Daisy pin). Obviously, I'm nervous (even with his good references), as I've never traded online before, but I guess at some point I was going to have to take a leap of faith if I was ever going to do any trading online. Worst-case scenario, I'll be out a pin that I bought for trading (and already bought another one of this Saturday at Epcot), and will likely refrain from trading with anyone else that isn't at least on DPF, but at this point, I have no reason to believe he won't follow through (again, considering the number of references he has, going all the way back to 2001.) (Still, I don't think my nervousness about the trade will subside until the pin he's supposed to trade me shows up lol. Guess I'm a bit of a nervous nelly.)

I just want to thank everyone that helped me out in this thread. I've finally completed my first successful online pin trade, and everything went great! So thanks for the tips and help!

Glad to hear everything went well!

Thanks everyone! I just got my hands on the Mechanical Kingdom Donald on the Jungle Cruise pin, so now I just need the castle to have all the pins in the set that have been released so far (there's still one more to be released, but where these are surprise releases, I can only keep checking the pin shopping spots at WDW each week until the new one releases). I'll admit that I was really nervous about my first online trade, but am glad that everything went smoothly and am very happy with the pin I got through trade (the Mechanical Kingdom Daisy on Astro Orbiter).
