I'm wondering how to expand my pin collection without breaking the bank or trading away some of the pins I have that I think are cool and still getting some good pins. Any ideas?

Try and get some of the newer releases and get rid of em while they're hot, I was able to offload my vanellope racers and king candy racers for about 65/55 each and I had 4, also if your out of state best bet would be to lurk ebay and try and find some steals that are BIN or up for auction, usually you have to be quick about it but i have definitely been able to grab some steals that way as well. As for not trading away pins, at first its hard, but then again this is a pin trading community so I am sure pins you trade away will always find their way back to you, sometimes you gotta make a sacrifice to get other things you want

Check the sales board on this forum. You can often find good deals and/or entire collections for sale. Many people sell due to financial issues or because they are leaving pin trading.

Win the lottery?

Seriously, pins are not a cheap hobby unless all you collect are hidden mickeys. Decide what's important to you. Do you buy Starbucks every day? Go to the movies every weekend? Consider repurposing other spending money if pins are what you truly want.

Remember, "It's a marathon, not a sprint." Don't get caught up in to measuring your collections to other people's, and don't get too caught up in trends and buy stuff you don't really love. Learn to "zig" when other people "zag." I'm so pin money broke right now, because so many people are 1. trying to catch up with all the new D23 releases 2. trying to raise some funds to pay off all their D23 purchases, combined with back-to-school expenses, that there are quite a few bargains to be found.
