We've had this come up before actually and our opinion is as follows.
While there is only really one "official winner" of an auction, you can approach the 2nd place person in regards to a trade. Hypothetically, if they were willing to trade during an auction, you would think they would be willing to trade just because. While the chances of them accepting this trade offer are probably very likely, they are not bound by auction rules, and may decline the trade if they so choose.

This is a really useful question. I've just had the same situation on my first auction. Wasn't planning on auctioning both sets but at least now I know there's a chance I could do. Thanks Mylittletyguy.
