I don't think it's dying but it is getting way more expensive and frustrating. I agree with tiggeriffic that more people are buying.
 
If you were to judge if it was dying from my postal bills you would see it is not dying. However, it seems to be morphing and more people are indeed buying. It is very expensive to have a lot of traders and it getting harder to trade. I find myself trading more overseas now. For me it is about 40/60 trading overseas with the 40% being those. It used to be 90% were in the US for me. So even the postage is more expensive now. With that said, I will always be a trader. I have realized that it is not the shiny pieces of metal that are the most fun to collect, but the wonderful people you meet that are the true treasures.
 
Pin prices have definitely sky-rocketed and so have edition sizes. International trading was big for me too several years ago, but that seems to have died down as well. I'm not evening receiving no-thank-you replies to any trade offers, let alone any counter-offers. I hope this long trading lull eventually ends!
 
It is almost dead. All NBC pins are trash now. Send them to me and I will dispose if them in a safe manner. Lol :wiggle:
 

I agree, prices have increased so much. I also used to trade internationally allot but the postal prices have gone sky high to mail internationally that it makes it to expensive and there are some awesome international traders out there. I also don't get very many replies back for offers that I send out. I also try to reply back weather I want to do the trade or not, I also look at the persons trade list and try to make counter offers if I can.

My pins are more older pins because I don't live anywhere close to Disney and can't just run over there to buy all the new releases. It seems that most of the traders out there today are only interested in all the newest pins that are being released so it makes it really hard to trade with them.
 

Don't give up on older pins. I am a relatively new online trader, and I am accumulating older pins (by purchase AND by trade) at a fever pitch! I love the older pins. I'm even getting current LE pins, and trading them off for older pins that are more desirable to me. Matter of fact, I've traded for some older pins with one of the people on this very thread!
 

It's really nice to see a newer trader interested in some of the older pins. It seems like a lot, although not all, newer traders only want the newest, latest & greatest pins that are coming out. I've actually had someone say this to me about the "Mickey for president" pin: That's only a LE of 1000, why would anyone want that pin.
I told them that several years back that was a couple hundred dollar pin and it still is a higher dollar pin.
they replied with "whatever"

I have allot of these older "Higher dollar" pins in my collection and I still value them as higher trade valued pins, at least to me they are.

I know everyone isn't like this but that kind of attitude about older pins because they are not a LE 300 or lower just turns me off. I always try to make my trades as equal as possible and even offer multiple pins if mine isn't the same edition size but it's hard to when some of the newer pins that I do like are LE 300 and some people won't give you the time of day even if you do offer multiple pins.

Don't get me wrong, I still do allot of trading and 99% of the people that I do trade with are awesome people but it's just when I run into people like this that I get turn off.
 
I did not know that people don't like old pins that are above LE 500 or something. Where can I get my hands on some old large LE pins for cheap?? Sign me up... Lol



when we started this crazy hobby. Only old LE pins were cool. Than Valentins day came and DSF pins went out of this world. So I guess it depends on time. Old or new. Both have a time and place.

The most important thing to me about pins is the character or movie they depict. In fact, many of my most wanted pins are older pins. As someone who has mostly newer pins for trade, I sometimes find the opposite problem - people with older pins only want older pins/DA/DS/Gomes/BTs and don't want to trade for newer pins.
 
As a collector, I don't do much trading to be honest. I have only a few traders and they're not really in demand pins either. I've got my first international trade going out in the mail this week, but otherwise I buy almost everything, either at the parks or through the kind folks who do pick ups (and a few eBay sellers who seem to have DSF stuff up minutes after they come out).

Sadly, I've also run into pin sharks, which left a bad taste in my mouth. Stuff like that also makes me weary of trading since I'm an awful judge of "pin value."

Newer versus older, though, there are older pins that I'd love to have, but since I'm not a trader I'm sort of stuck, since I try not to spend crazy amounts over retail for my pins, this hobby eats enough of my paycheck as it is!
 

Sorry you had to deal with that person. Why would anyone want that pin? Because some people actually like and collect Mickey. I feel sorry for the people who collect pins based only on perceived value. Some of us collect because we like the pins.

Me too. But the funny part is the only true value is what it sold for new. You can make up what ever story you want but it's still just a little pin and not a gold bar. The fake over price is only due to people paying such crazy prices. Not that it will happen. But if everyone stopped paying the price. They would drop. Side thought. Maybe a pin could go up a little due to demand. But DSF 4 pin set that is 12.95 each... Should never sell for $450 on the day it was bought. That's supper sharky.

I don't think it's dying, but harder for a number of the reasons posted here...especially if you are not located near disney. I also love the old pins, but often don't have old pins of equal value to trade, so it gets hard to trade. And buying a pin for a trader, when I can't get them from disney direct, is also pricey and risky. It could be fake or it could be a pin that no one ends up wanting.

That said, I agree with Timeerkat. It's more about the whether or not I like the character, scene etc that really matters.
 
interesting thread. as a new pin collector I collect pins from movies or characters that mean something to me, not for any perceived resale value. I do buy on ebay since I'm not close to a park. There are some fabulous older pins that are on my grail list simply because they remind me of my first Disneyland trip in the 1960s. I have found that the cast members in the park are nice about trading, and I love being able to visit the shops and see trading boards when they are available. As for on-line trading, what about common courtesy? I send out trade requests and like some of you, no response, or even worse in my opinion, a response of LOL. That puts me off trying to trade on-line. I wonder if others are put off by this rudeness and decide to not trade on-line any longer?

I am agreeing with everything everyone has said. I myself, have never traded in the parks as I have not been since 2002, and I only bought pins, never traded. I would have to say online trading is really big right now, Pinpics, This forum, Pinstagram, etc. Since I haven't been to the parks in a while I can't speak for trading in the parks,but I know its not dying due to how many people do trade online, and how many pins I see for sale on ebay. (Even though most lots are scrappers) I enjoy pin trading an do hope it will stay around for a long time.
