Every once in a while some sort of fever takes over my brain. I think it's when I haven't been able to find a pin I really want for a while, and I get that itch. So I go looking on evilbay to see if there is anything interesting there.

Today I found a rare pin I've wanted for a LOOOOONG time. I knew from looking at it that the price seemed too good -- $50 for an LE 100.

Upon closer inspection, the seller original had eight of them! The sad part is, seven have already sold, and I'm sure the last one will be snagged up soon. And while it might not be completely impossible for someone to have 8% of all of the existing pins, it's pretty unlikely. Especially since the pin was originally part of a set.

That means a bunch more counterfeits getting into the market, and another pin I really have to be careful about if I ever do find it.

Not to let my finance background show here, but 8 out of 100 is 8%. It's 8 divided by 100, not 100 divided by 8.
 
It depends on the pin, but if it was a part of the set w/o other pins in the same set looks fishy to me.

Could you pls tell us which pin ??
 
Wait until you get it to look at it... I mean he may be one the crazy people who brings their entire family and gets like 10 lol. But I hope it works out :/

Now that's just emberassing. My grad school adviser once told me that my tests were so lopsided se thought I might be a savant. Fortunately I have mad English skills and my wife can balance a check book.

It is, however, 1 out of every 12.5 pins made, which translates in no way to a percentage. :-D

Okay, now with that info. It seems like all of these guys pins are available in quantities of 4, 6, 8, 10+. So either there are a heckuva lot of pins that have been scrapped/counterfeited. Or this is one of the infamous people who would buy as many DS.com releases as possible.

Also, if you search his other auctions the other pieces of that Christmas Carol set are there. All in quantities of 8. So that would be a possible indicator that he did obtain them in sets, and are breaking them up for more profit.

Edit: I also see that he is selling 51 different so-called "Fantasy" pins, but since the characters are recognizable, those would more accurately described as bootleg. But if he can get a hold of so many of those (either commissioning them directly, or through a "friend") that would also mean he has a pipeline to having counterfeits made.

This pin from the same set has definitely been scrapped...I have seen it come up for sale many times:



So I wouldn't be surprised if others from this set have been scrapped as well.
 
As much as I would hate to think they are starting to scrap Scrooge pins, it is odd that is the only seller that has them? Have you tried asking his source for the pins?

No, I didn't ask. If he is or isn't legit the answer is likely to be the same -- he bought 'em from X. Just no telling. And I wouldn't look at it as scrap of a Scrooge pin as much as scrapping the Mickey's Christmas Carol set. LE 100s are always ripe for it, and by 2008 the market was already such that counterfeits were already becoming common.
