In all these years that I have been a DPF member I have not sold pins on the site...and very infrequently purchased & held one pin co-op in 2011.

We have decided to really " liquidate & clean house" of our unwanted, extra, duplicate, etc...Disney items (pins, dolls, tshirts, puzzles, pin bags etc...) so we are considering selling on DPF.
In regards to selling on DPF it always seemed like there was the potential for (I'm sorry to say this, I hope no offense is taken) but some high maintenance drama and sometimes dubious actions. I only say this because I have watched a lot of drama unfold over the years (sometimes it kept me away from the site). I know for the 100 great transactions that happen likely only one bad transaction happens but for me those odds can be stress inducing.

So if anyone would like to provide any advise, "Best Selling Practices" & procedures, do's & don'ts, easy listing & pricing tips, auction perspectives, tale tells

...please feel free to post here or PM me if you would like the info to remain private

We really want to do this correctly/fairly as it will likely be our one shot at this.
We are per se not leaving the pin world but the burden of all the extra items is oppressive so we are just keeping our core collection of our most loved items.
I thank you in advance for your time with this and your feedback.

Actually you have no more chances of problems here then on ebay. With ebay the risks might be bigger. If the buyer decides for any reason they don't want the item they can return it because of the buyer protection policy. I have also heard of ebay charging back fees on items the buyer says they did not receive even if the delivery confirmation says they did receive it. Because of that you should get signature confirmation. It costs a couple of extra dollars but on biger ticket items it can be worth it.

Good luck in your sales.

I understand signature confirmation but with us it is not a good idea. With us, by the time we hear the door knock from the back of the house and get to the door the mail man is gone already. Our regular mailman knows to just leave the package and he hides it in some predetermined locations. With signature confirmation it will be more hastle than it is worth. I think you should sell here verses Ebay and I have sold on both! I have very rarely had a problem with mailing things out. The problem I have had has always been on Ebay and not here. The people here are pretty honest. Besides, with Ebay you have listing fees, final value fees, and PayPal fees. Here you will only have PayPal fees if the buyer does not choose to send as a gift. There is a program you can use that will show you what the fee will be ahead of time if you would like to have it I will provide you with a link. It is on my laptop and right now I am on my desktop or I would just list it now.

Thanks for the info. This is exactly the type of feedback & perspective I am hoping to read.

The Fee Program will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I've sold on here and eBay, and I'd reiterate Rocke01's comment that I preferred here. The buyer can choose to pay as goods if they want the protection, but if they pay as gift (which I've done almost every time I've bought items on DPF) then you don't lose any money in fees, which is nice. It's also nice to avoid the listing fee eBay charges, especially as they charge a higher fee (at least, UK eBay do) for fixed price items than auctions, plus the end price fee, so you lose a fair chunk there. Here you just set your price, and it's as easy as that.

I think another reason it is good here is the easy communication. I find a lot of people don't answer eBay messages whereas when buying/selling here on DPF it's been easy to stay in contact and discuss anything that needs discussing. I wonder if this helps with the risk of "dubious actions" as you put it. What also helps with that is that I think there are simply fewer people on DPF that are out to commit said actions than there are on eBay. Obviously the number of people on the site is smaller, but also because we are a community for pin collectors, people are here to enjoy pins, not steal them. Plus there's much less chance of being sold a counterfeit or scrapper. Somehow it just feels safer here, if that makes sense.

One more good thing is the feedback - I know eBay has this too, but again the smaller scale here makes it easier. Negatives stand out much more clearly when it's one out of 20. On eBay a seller may get thousands of positives despite selling scrappers/fakes because people don't know better, but buyers on here are aware and leave feedback accordingly. Plus, I find people on here are better at remembering to leave feedback. When I've sold on here, I've got feedback as soon as the item was received. When I've sold on eBay, 25% of my customers never left feedback, even after I contacted them to check everything was okay. I even left them feedback to see if that would prompt them to do it, even though I usually like to wait until I know they've received their item before doing so. No such problems here - if anyone forgets, a quick PM and they rectify it.

Sorry for the long, rambling message, but basically it all boils down to one thing: DPF is a community, and as a result, we treat each other well, especially when buying and selling. If you can sell on here, I would. It's easier, feels less pressured, and you can save quite a bit in fees. Best of luck with whatever you decide! If you're selling any Oliver and Company or Emperor's New Groove pins, please do let me know! :)

Not rambling at all...thank you for the tremendous thought put into your response, very much appreciate by us :)
I am really sorry but we don't have either of those character pins. I will take a look at your wants and see if we have any matching pins.
Thanks again.

Aw, thanks, I appreciate that!

eBay and PayPal fees - about 13%. payPal without ebay - about 3% if paid as goods. ebay will place a hold on paying you until you mail out the item(s) and input the delivery confirmation numbers; then usually the "estimated date funds wiill be released" changes to the day the buyer receives the item. Power sellers on ebay may get their money faster (and they are the sellers that ebay protects the most).

I haven't sold on dpf yet, but I have bought from those on dpf and haven't had any problems. Most sellers here are willing to work with the buyers if there are any problems. Like you said, there is always the possibility of bad apples anywhere but I've found as a community, dpf looks out after their members whereas ebay is straight business.

you may find it easier to sell pins here (unless you're looking for maximum profits) but you may find it easier to sell other non-pin merchandise on ebay as dpf members are mainly pin collectors (with some doll collectors) and may not be interested in other merchandise.

You will find drama in life everywhere, it's just the way it is. LOL.

But, here are some helpful guides for proper packaging & shipping.

Guide to pin buying

*The prices are no longer accurate for shipping since USPS changed its prices and I can't edit it*

The guide can also be used for pin selling. Most helpful hints are:
1. Good communication;
2. Accurate pictures (no stock photos);
3. Accurate description of the item (note any damage, blemish, etc.);
4. Delivery confirmation for items less than $250; signature confirmation for items $250 or more (if sent as goods);
5. For prices, check ebay sold items and get an average. Also price your items below ebay prices (buyers know that sellers save 10% in fees by not using ebay so buyers expect some of that savings to be passed on to them)
6. Note that the forum rules require payments sent as goods. I always send as goods UNLESS it is someone I know VERY well.

The best outlet to sell will differ depending on the pins. If they are highly sought after they will sell quickly here for the most part but the forum has become a bit of a ghost town buying and selling wise as a large percentage of members have taken to Facebook instead. Ebay offers you a much larger audience so that can help to find buyers if you aren't getting enough interest here.

ebay charges 10% of the ENTIRE sale including the shipping costs so you are actually paying more than 10% as he shipping cost is gone from your profits plus the fee. PayPal gets 3.9% for transfers from a balance or bank account, I'm not completely sure but they use to charge more if it was paid via credit card. Most sellers will get 100 or 100k free listings depending on what the current promotion is. Those are sometimes only for buy it now or auction style listings so you should check that. There can be a per listing cost but unless you are selling a lot you should be able to avoid that cost by using whatever is available for free. I always suggest starting an auction for the least amount you would happily take for the item if it's an auction style listing. If you use the "reserve price" feature it is an additional charge and a lot of people avoid bidding on them because it's frustrating to bid alone and not be able to meet the reserve price.

A huge help in selling or even trading for that matter is to print shipping labels directly through ebay or Paypal and avoid paying USPS prices. Bothe ebay and PayPal offer steep discounts for printing through them directly and both come with free delivery confirmation! This dollars add up of you do any serious shipping.

I wish you the best of luck no matter which way you decide to go! I will be sure to check out your sales threads should you post them here and if you decide to use ebay and want to pm me your seller name I will check them out there as well.

I actually bought from you before ,everything was perfect ...good luck with your sales here ,I am sure you will be fine

Thanks for the % break down of fees, number are always helpful in making informed selections. :)

The Pro & Con of DPF vs Ebay very informative and helpful, thank you.
I will send a PM if we go the route.
Thanks again

So much great info and insight. Thank you all for sharing your perspectives, experiences and encouragement. I have a lot of information now and quite a bit to think about.
Likely we will start with a small sales thread in the coming days and see how that goes.

So much has changed on DPF and I have no idea how to to close a thread or to whom I request for closing. If someone would be so kind to PM the instructions or a link I will be greatly appreciative.
Thank you all again and have a great day.

Send a PM to dancecats to close the thread. Members can only close their own threads in the Marketplace.

I don't use facebook for pin related things. Can someone please pm me some information and names of groups where I can sell pins ? Thanks :)
