I happened to come across the newly released Mattel Classic Dolls while at Toys R Us tonight and thought I would give my 2 cents on them. If are unfamiliar with these dolls, Mattel released a set of Princess and Villain Dolls approximately a month ago (I don't know exactly when, but it was not that long ago). Mattel has released Cinderella, Ariel, Snow White, the Evil Queen (Grimhilde is her actual name I'm told and I apologize for the butchered spelling), and Ursula. Since I was only interested in the Villains I wasn't really looking for the Princesses, but when I found them I went ahead and gave them a once over.
To me Mattel has been lacking in quality and accuracy when it comes to Disney dolls. Granted, in the late 80s and mid to late 90s I believe that was our only access to Disney dolls and they were pretty good, but over the years they have just become generic shadows of our beloved Disney crew. (Now, if the Disney Store came out with dolls that early I don't remember them. I was a child in the 80s and 90s so maybe my mother just never bought them.) For this release, I was quite surprised at their quality. Now some I though were a hit and some a miss, but over all they are an improvement over the mass marketed ones.
I did buy the Queen and Ursula because those are the ones I wanted. I've attached pics below. The Queen doll itself is pretty awesome; her dress is pretty detailed and it looks to be several pieces instead of one piece. My only issue with her is that she has no hair. Her head is flocked instead to give the appearance of her iconic headpiece. It's not a deal breaker, but it is a little odd. Ursula is a different story. Her face to me is dead on; she even has real hair it looks like! However, her body is a different story. The torso is plush similar to the Disney store doll, but her tentacles are plastic. She is using two to "stand" on while the others are to her side. Again, not a deal breaker ... just interesting. I am keeping them in their boxes just because I like them.
Now for the Princesses. To me, Snow White was definitely the prettiest and the most movie accurate. Her face is pretty, her dress pretty, and her quality was great. I think she is better looking then her Disney store doll. Cinderella looked very generic to me. Just ordinary. I would prefer her Disney doll counterpart over this version. Ariel was for me by far the worst. Her face was weird and her costume boring. She appeared to have legs under the fin, but I didn't buy her so I can't confirm. The Disney Store Doll is 1000% times prettier. It's a shame to because if I was to going to get one of the Princesses it would have been her.
Since I didn't buy the Princess dolls I do not have photos to share; however, I'm sure if you google them or search ebay you can see them for yourselves.
Oh, and I also found a Couture de Force Maleficent. Love her! The other figures in that series are also stunning - especially Aurora - so I may have to get a few more of these! Sorry for the not-so-great pics and the long post!
