Mickey waffle pattern

When did the mickey waffle pattern back first appear on pins, and has it been ubiquitous since then?

I was just wondering this, too! I know Pin Trading started in 1999, but haven't been able to find info on when the Mickey waffle pattern started.

It started a few years ago. Maybe five? And it's not used in all places. WDI and DSF/DSSH have different patterns on the back of their pins.

Disney Auction Pins and DisneyShopping.com pins did not start out with a waffle type back ... eventually an auction gavel print was added to Disney Auction pins and then even a small 3-D type bubble was added. The textured back of DisneyShopping.com pins has also changed over the years. 🙂

So the lack of a patterned back, Mickey or otherwise, doesn't necessarily indicate a counterfeit?

I think it's still not used exclusively, right?

These days the Mickey head pattern is on the back of all park pins - at least as far as the U.S. parks go. I don't have any Japan or Paris pins right at hand to double-check, but it's on the back of the most recent Hong Kong pin I have too.

As noted above, WDI and DSF have different patterns on the backs of their pins.
