First (and let me preface this by saying, point blank, I was NOT at the event and have no first-hand knowledge of this auction or what happened), TiggerNut's description of the other bidder as 'newbie' is very neutral and can pertain to anyone. Please keep all discussion about the auction itself. Speculation about the identity of the 'newbie' is not appropriate nor necessary.

Second, congratulations on winning the auction. The pins are gorgeous and I'm glad they ended up in a collection where they truly will be loved (even though I'm drooling over those Cheshires).

Just to look at this from a different perspective:

Would it be possible that the other person felt the same way about a group of traders trying everything to make sure he didn't win?

Yeah... I am still not understanding. You are right in saying that these pins are worth more to alice collectors, but it also sounds like you guys got taken for a ride. Paying (potentially) thousands of dollars more than you should have doesn't sound like a win in my eyes.

The money, though, is not really what I care about. I guess what I really don't like is the celebratory hoorah over conquering an unknown beast, when in reality no one knows who this guy is.
 

I agree. There are many who would call Tiggernut arrogant and disrespectful to others. To me, it's further evidence that the pin trading hobby is a clique hobby, newcomers and those without connections need not apply.

It really sounds like there is an air of entitlement to some imagined hierarchy of pin traders as well as further hysteria over unproven counterfeit fears.
 
Actually. All assumptions aside. basically this was a bid war that went nuts... We see it happen on evilbay all the time. why not at a live auction?

I say woohoo. you won, even if you over paid. woohoo to those you are splitting the pins with.. you are doing that right? and to the person you out bid... Well, they gave as good as they could.

was it a counterfiet buyer? Was it a new trader? who knows.

What if I was to show up at next years WDW event and not introduce myself, see a friday 13th set I absolutly had to have and told everyone to give up? Would rumors begin flying that I was an evil counterfieter? Would people outbid me for the simple fact i was an unknown?
 
This is why I am so ecstatic still that I joined this extraordinary group of people!!! It is so nice to see that people in this world still care and more over, care enough to help others!!! People still work as a team for the greater good of the whole group rather than always looking out for #1! I may not have been one of those Alice collectors, but want to thank you just as a fellow collector because you and all the others who worked to be victorious in what is right have given me a little more faith in people's kindness!
 
I saw the Alice lot and it was gorgeous. I also saw the$3,000.00 bid on Friday and almost fell over . When they announced the $6,000.00 winner, I really fell over . LOL Thinking whom in their right mind in this economy would spend that much on a lot of pins, but Kudos to you for running that guy off. Wish I could have formally met you.

I really don't know what these cliques or hierarchy it is that you are talking about. I honestly don't see it but I think a lot of people like to put titles on things. There have been newcomers mixed in with old timers at events all the time so I see no such prejudice as you are describing when it comes to, in Tiggernuts term, "newbies."

I think Diana explained her actions perfectly as to why she bid so high. I would find it a bit odd and a tad insulting if someone came off with a $3,000 bid when an auction has so much time left.

Agree again. Doesn't seem very "Disney" to be competing and congrats over ganging up on him.

Well, Disney always releases LE pins (like the LE 200 Disney Villains set) knowing full-well that more than 200 people will want them. So, how is competing with each other over limited pin supplies not very "Disney"??

Besides, if Disney didn't want us competing against each other, they wouldn't be running auctions at the Pin Trading events...

Amen! I've been trading and collecting for 10 years and been to a few events. But, I am only at a Disney park <> 5x a year. It's rare that I feel welcome amongst a group of traders, usually have to be on defense. But, I guess this is just another aspect in life. There's always going to be cliques, and it's apparent in pin trading.

It is not very "Disney" (polite) to be ganging up on him.

Geesh, discussing pin etiquette is just as bad as discussing politics or religion. Just as cutthroat.

The thing about opinions is that that (to quote/paraphrase Margaret) they're sometimes like armpits: we've all got them and sometimes they stink. When you post your opinion (and YES, I say OPINION), people either will agree with you or they won't ... and that's fine. I believe that when two (or more) people agree all the time, one of them has stopped thinking. I asked you to keep this thread about the auction for a reason. This thread has gone way off course ... I think we're done here.

Also, about multi-quoting passages: do you see the symbol at the far right at the bottom of each post? It looks like two quote marks inside a quote box with a plus sign. That's how you multi-quote passages; just click on that for each passage you want to multi-quote and just use the Reply With Quote for the last passage you want to quote.

I agree with you, I go in quiet & leave quiet but If I ever get treated like that at an event there will be problems cause I treat those in the same way i want to be treated. This is a hobby not a sport or compitition.
