my accidental accumulation of scrappers

I've still got some scrappers among my Hidden Mickey sets.
I was gifted a large collection of pins when I was just a newbie, and my first goal was to complete the sets that my friend had begun, not realizing that some of them were fakes, and some of the pins I bought to add to them were fakes, too.
I need to evaluate which sets are worth hanging on to.

We do get better at spotting the fakes as we gain more experience in this hobby. I have found periodic fakes from my early trade days too. Some I toss, some I keep as place holders in hopes of finding a real one someday.

My kids are just starting to really get into trading so when we go to parks they usually trade for a few. It happens and we don’t want to discourage them trading since it’s genuinely a pin they like. My son traded for the same scraper gold crown about ten times he wanted to collect all the crowns. 😂

It’s painful but you’ve got to let them enjoy! I didn’t get time to explain the scrapper situation before my wife started trading and we definitely lost some beautiful pins for scrap 😂. She’s since learnt the difference (mostly) but she was so sad! Not worth doing it to little ones.

My kids got really good at finding scrappers. They even started saying "May I please see that pin?" So they could inspect it
before they traded. Which is an ok thing to do. I still do it and sometimes if it's a pin I haven't seen, I trade for it even though
I know it's a scrapper.

My almost 7 year old is aware of scrappers. We don't do a lot of in person trading (being from Boston), but at the parks if we go to a board I use the phrase "I don't see anything here for our collection" to signal everything is a scrapper.
If I don't say that she goes on a mission to see if she can find the (usually) one that is not a scrapper. It's almost as if she loves the scavenger hunt more than trading.

(And she loves handing out stickers more than anything. So every trip I now buy a 100 pack of munchling stickers and we haven't come back home with a single left over yet, lol)
