So we finally gave in and bought Disney+. We now have watched season one of the Mandalorian and I did a bit of online digging.

If what I read is correct. The Mandalorian is set ~5 years post The Return of the Jedi (the 3rd movie from 1970/1980 original trilogy.) Of course Yoda was not a baby during this period.

Thus it would appear naming any pin containing the character known as "The Asset" and "The Child" or even "The Kid" would be incorrect for 'baby Yoda'. Since per my new understanding "The Child" and Yoda are not the same character.

Would be interested in what others know on this topic.

This is a hard thread to tread right now. When you catch up to season 2, you'll understand why. Remember spoiler tags don't work for thread previews, friends.

I usually just call him Baby Yoda, because that's what most people know him by.

This comment will stick to general terms about things known through season 1 of the tv show.

The Child has never been Yoda. It is of the same species as Yoda but definitely not Yoda. Everyone on the Internet just took to calling it Baby Yoda during series 1 of the tv show because it looks like a baby version of Yoda and it had no known name. Disney was adamant it should never be called Baby Yoda and it was never called that in anything official. It was basically always The Child as far as Disney was concerned. People associated with the tv show said ages ago that The Child did have a name and that it would be revealed at some point in the tv show but that didn’t happen in season 1 so the Internet had a nice long break with no new tv show stuff coming out to keep running with calling it Baby Yoda no matter what Disney wanted.

I remember when the show first came out, there was a memo to call it The Child after the first episode. Yeah. No. That lasted all of a week until we just started calling it Baby Yoda, because that's literally what everyone else called it. Every time I call him Baby Yoda, some Star Wars fanboy tries to correct me. And then I just point to my name tag which has Ahsoka Tano under my name. That gets them quiet.

Baby Yoda is just a nickname, just like any other nickname given out of love. This one by the fans, not official. Try telling someone that the nickname they gave their kid makes no sense, you should call him X and you'll get an earful. If you refer to "The Child" to a non-Star Wars fan, people will look at you blankly. If you have a child with you, someone might even think you were talking about your kid. As in, "Did you see what The Child did to Cara, he could have hurt her." If you refer to "Baby Yoda," you'll get a lot more head nods, Captain America's, "I understand that reference." Even if they don't have any clue about the show.

    But yes, catch up, lol.

So, for the pins in PTDB, I put Baby Yoda in the description, but not the title. The title will say "The Child." If I find someone else has added a pin and identified it as Baby Yoda in the title, I remove that.

I will probably add the name in the description as well, for search purposes. I don't know if the name is actually going to catch on.

I was wondering about the name now that it is known. I'm curious if it will catch on. I am having a hard time even remembering it.

Yeah, Disney messed up big time by not having Din call him by something in those first few episodes. Any sort of nickname would have done! But no one is going to refer as a main character by a clunky title like "The Child", or even "The Foundling". Kid or Kiddo might have worked....any sort of cute nickname, really.

Baby Yoda was going to be tough to combat (no matter what) once it caught on in social media, but they didn't help themselves by not even trying to steer us in a direction in episode 2.

To answer your question- I think Baby Yoda should at least be included somewhere in the description for search purposes. It's become too entwined with the character to just ignore.

Random side note: Wouldn't it have been hilarious if he had, in fact, turned out to be a clone of Yoda? So he was, in a way, a baby Yoda? Hubby and I were just joking about this after last episode.

This is the pin that started me down this path. prettysure it's of The Child and not Yoda. Is a name change needed?

I may be wrong, but I think there's a cane in that pin. It's hard to see because it's practically the same color as part of the robe.

Ah... yes, I see that. My eye just blended it into the clothing... as if it was trim.

Lots of issues with differentiating this character...

Personally, I think this is just a case of bad marketing and now having to live with it. Having released his name, they may be able to get that to catch on a bit, but I would guess only with fans. Too much merchandise and social media (public media to be honest, too) has been released and broadcast using "Baby Yoda". I really think that is his #1 name and the one that most will use from here on out. Disney made a big blunder to not give him an official name in the first season. Having decided to do that, it was inevitable that the "Baby Yoda" name would stick.

"The Child" is a terrible name, because not only does Mando barely call him that (he uses "Kid" a LOT more), but try searching for that online. You get all kinds of child sizes and things made for a child. It's death in a search engine. Baby Yoda works in a search engine, and it's now so stuck to the character that I can't imagine anything erasing the name. It's what I search for, definitely, because search engines understand it. Also, "Baby Yoda" at least gives you the opportunity to call him "Baby" -- which is so much better than "The Child". Personally, I do "like" his real name now . . . though it will take some getting used to, I have to admit. :)

Assuming all listings are for Star Wars The Child, I have 223 listings to add "Grogu for search purposes" in...

Do I know that the character is called "The Child"?? Yes.
Do I only refer to him as Baby Yoda?? Yes
I think both names are important like how it can be Sleeping Beauty or Aurora.

That's unfortunate . . . but with a character like this, I think it was inevitable. Is there any way for me to submit changes and help out with that?

Although, "The Child" and "Kid" and "Baby Yoda" can really be termed nicknames now that the darling has a real name! :) (This is really the place for a bouncy Baby Yoda! I mean . . . a bouncy Grogu!)

That's one option, having users input...or is there way to engage developer to add from the database? That would be faster. Is the site still addressing issues or improvements?
For example, if Keyword or Description contains 'Baby Yoda', then add 'Grogu for search purposes'.

I'm doing a search under "child". In the first page, I found two Walt pins. I haven't even done a search for "Baby Yoda" because not everyone adds that in their listings either.

Plus, I have to correct some titles too. Like when it says Star Wars Mandalorian or Star Wars Empire Strikes (and no back or the)!

It looks like there may be about 70-80 "The Child" pins

Oh, dear. Is there a way for us to help out with the title edits and adding hit words? I'd be more than happy to plow through some!

If you created any PTDB listings for The Child, you are able to edit them. :)
