Hello, my friend and I were walking around DLR after buying some trader packs and I spoke with a few CMs. They all have to take a "pin class" and now the CMs are instructed to look for scrappers. If they see any regulars or someone with all or a lot of scrappers, they can go as far as calling security and that person being blacklisted from Disneyland. A few asked my opinion as well (I am no expert but I tried). Crazy huh?

Sounds a bit excessive...

Don't get me wrong, sure, scrappers are terrible, but the policy has always been before that they didn't want to offend families who might just be visiting and not know better.

If they really are educating about scrappers, that's awesome! Hope they offer classes to the public too like they did with scoop, but at both DLR and WDW. Look forward to seeing how this works out, but as someone said on another thread, CMs are just as bad about spreading rumors as guests are.

Thats true.... I spoke with the CMs I always see lol... They said the "extreme measures" apply for regulars that blatantly trade scrappers. But with some of them I pointed out the scrappers when they asked me and they totally wanted to hunt down the people who traded them. It was like that with every single person we traded with tonight.

Hmmmmm I have yet to hear this . . . I like Grim have always heard that they are going to continue to let it slide because they don't want to "ruin the magic." I just can't see Disney actually doing this. WIll be interesting to see if it really happens.

My $.02...

Jess, Dan and I actually saw something like this a week or two ago. There was a cast member (custodial - go figure) that stood in the pin trading area for several hours at teh' ho pointing out fakes in people's books and during trades. I was all gung ho about it until Dan brought up a very valid point. He went and traded for a fake on purpose from another cast member, then went up to this pin policewoman as it were, and asked to trade it to her for one of her pins (she was wearing a lanyard). She looked at Dan's pin and said, "no, I can't, this pin is fake." To which Dan replied "But I just got it from that cast member over there. Are you telling me that I just got ripped off by a Disney employee who took my real pin and gave me a fake one, and on top of that I can't even trade it back to get a real one?" He explained that it can't go one way.

Disney can't sit there and point out fakes in the park and humiliate or otherwise embarrass guests before they start doing something proactive on THEIR end. If they have to take a class and do all this stuff to "help us", they need to start being actually fair on their end and stop putting fakes on lanyards. I have been in the park at 7 AM and have seen lanyards that are brand new, no trades yet off them that day, full of fakes. If they really want to do us a favor, take the fakes out of circulation and stop giving them to the unsuspecting and to children! Heck, if they need someone to hire whose sole job is to sit there and pick out and toss the fakes every night between closing and opening, I'd take the job. All they gotta do is ask.

<climbs down from soap box>

...yea every time i find a fake on a CM they have never had a issue removing
them and replacement them...
Unfortunately, in my years of pin trading, I've encountered CM indifference about this issue, even when I (nicely--always nicely) tell the CM that it's a fake and show and explain to them exactly how they can tell it's a fake. They say oh, okay or oh, really? and are polite--and put the pin back on their lanyard. While I'm still standing there.

So, sorry to be cynical, but I'm not holding my breath about CMs being so knowledgeable and/or diligent about not accepting or removing scrappers. I also agree with what Geoff wrote above.

I totally agree. In all of my years pin trading I have never seen a cast member take a pin of their lanyard because it was a fake (even after telling them). Most CM don't really care...

I have only seen one CM actually remove a pin after I told a friend I was trading with that it was fake . . . . a few cms have asked "how do you know" and so I will tell them the color or border issue depending on the pin - but they just say oh ok. Never a hint that that they are going to do anything about it. Also there are soooo many fakes I honestly can't see Disney ever being able to fully control it. Too many bad feelings would occur between guests and cms that I dont think it is worth it from Disneys stand point.

I experienced my first upset CM last Saturday just inside the castle. Just as I was approaching him, he turned and threw a fake pin in a trash recepticle with all of his might. He was obviously quite upset about it. As I asked him if everything was alright he gave me the biggest fake smile.

I'm curious, what was the CM's response? Scrappers suck but if I encountered a CM like that when I first started, it would scare/turn me off of pin trading. Plus I would be so mad if I traded for a scrapper with a good pin and they refused to take it back. I hope pin trading at DL is still fun whenever I get the chance to go back!

CM's at DLR back in the early 2000's would refuse to take Disney enamel pins so they have declined trades before.

Wow, I quess that is good news. We are coming for Sci-Fi and were wondering if there are a lot of traders on sundays. Will we be hasled if we bring our books in to the park too trade?

not at all.this is mainly reagarding cm and guest trading.there are tooooons of traders out on sundays youll have agreat time.

I have run into a few cast members that really know their pins and can tell the difference between real ones and fakes. But it is very few. Most don't know too much about them.
