So I know I've only been doing this for 2 years. I think I have a decent grasp on the pin community but some things from the past I just don't know about. Or how things cycle. So I ask the veterans.

Is this practice of listing pins for trade that haven't even been released yet a new thing? Or has it be going on for a long time? I feel like it has recently popped up and primarily with DSF pins as soon as a flyer is released. I mean, how can 11 people honestly put down they are trading the next wave of Beloved Tales pins? They have no idea how the release will go or if they will be able to get them. I am sure they are dedicated to do whatever it takes, but to me it just seems kinda ballsy. Unless it's a LE3000 at the park, I don't list pins for trade until I know for a fact I can get it in my hands. I think this is almost equally as bad as preselling on eBay. I say almost because you can at least not commit to a trade request where as eBay you have to deliver or you get an infraction. But I feel like they're trying to cash in early to see how good a trade they can get before everyone else lists it for trade. Or they want to see what is offerred to know how valuable the pin might be. What do you guys think?
 
I know personally I have offered a pre-trade. I am willing to get a pin at the park when it comes out and the other person is willing to hold the pins that they have for me until I have it my hand. Once I have it in my hands then we can officially trade and send the pins to one another.
 
This isn't a new thing. When the Piece of Movie pins were coming out at the parks I would list that I was trading them before they were actually released, because I was pretty confident that I could get these pins and was open to setting up pre-trades.

Just as people list upcoming pins for pre-sales on eBay, people set up pre-trades as well. If someone was interested in a pre-trade I would always let the other trader know that it was not a guarantee that I could get the pin, and I wouldn't want them to send their pin until I actually had the pin in my hands.

I am assuming the people that have listed the upcoming Beloved Tales pins for trade are fairly certain they can get them, and they are just seeing what they could get in return...which could also determine if it is worth their time to camp out or not.

I agree that folks are seeing what they could get & then decide whether or not to do the overnight stay in the alley or wherever it is
 
Nope not a new thing, saw it with every new Uk pin coming out as people expected to get them and listed it for trade. I never get why people do it as something might go wrong or what not and then more hassle to tell the person couldnt get the pin.
 
I don't have access to new releases, so I can't say how sure you could be about getting a pin with a low edition size. I do often list a trader I've just bought on ebay, especially if the pin is in high demand. I don't send out requests to trade them. If I receive a request I'm interested in, I tell the trader that I'd like to make the trade but I just bought the pin, and I need to receive it and satisfy myself that it's authentic before we confirm a trade. I've made a few good trades this way. I don't see any harm as long as you are reasonably certain you can get the pin AND you are completely honest with the other trader.
 
I won't agree to pre-trades any more. From PinPics or on the boards. I held a WDW PTN Duffy for DL's PTN Duffy for someone who contacted me first. When the DL's finally came out, I waited a couple of days and nothing. I sent their email back to them asking if we were still trading. Nothing. This wasn't someone new to pin trading. By the time I figured out they had probably already traded their pin to someone else, no one wanted to trade their DL Duffy for a WDW one. Grrrrrr So, no more holding pins for me. Ya either has it in hand, or don't bother.
 

That's certainly a fair position. I always ask if they're willing to wait, and I take no offence if they say no.
 
I saw the auctions and was confused at first too. The logic, I think, is if a person can get someone to buy a to-be-released pin for $100 then it would be much more worth their time to wait in line at the crack of dawn.
 
I have only started doing it recently if they pin is on pin pics from UK
But I only ever do one pre trade in case there is a problem and I always tell the person that if I don t manage to get one etc
But yeah Its a new practice for me
