I have a curiosity question. I am still new to this, so..

A lot of times, when people offer "at cost" pick ups for DSF pins... They upcharge it an extra ten or so dollars.

For example: If a pin is 15.95, they want 25-30.

I am just curious as to why?

If they're charging extra money, then it's really not at cost. Of course people who charge shipping and maybe parking fees, are simply covering their own fees.

You need to distinguish between "at cost" or "close to cost" pick-ups and "I'm doing a pick-up." People who do the latter are not promising at cost; they are telling you they'll be somewhere and can pick up pins--and yes, some of them will add in a few bucks to cover their expenses (parking, gas, time, etc).

But you also need to realize that even "at cost" does not mean "the exact price on the sticker." First of all, there is tax applied; it varies by state but I think California's sales tax is relatively high, like close to 10%. Second of all, there is shipping (usually between $2 and $3, unless you buy several items and the weight of the package goes up). And finally, if you pay as goods--which is safest for you as the buyer--PayPal tacks on fees that the seller has to pay. If you do not cover those fees, the seller ends up with LESS than cost for the items, because he/she is paying those fees and not being compensated. Most sellers request that you add the couple bucks to offset those fees, so they don't do you a favor and end up losing money. Those legitimate expenses add up to $5 or $6 above the price listed on the item's barcode.

Also, DSF pins are usually worth a bit more than at cost instantly. So I never really mind if the seller adds a few dollars as an extra charge, and having to go to Hollywood is a major pain in the neck for most.

I'm aware of all of that. And the reason I asked is because I've seen people specifically say "at cost" only to add anywhere between 10-15 dollars to the price.

I know at cost isn't exact and all the extra fees like shipping and such.. I've had at-cost pick ups done by very nice people. And it was just a curiosity question, I wasn't attacking or saying anything bad about the people who did it. I just noticed it was a trend almost exclusive to DSF pins.

Thank you for the answer, though.

I figured as much, I was just curious if there was another specific reason - I'm all the way over here in the East Coast, so I know little about DSF and all that.

Thank you for answering!

I didn't think you were attacking anyone--but I've seen people underestimate what "at cost" means. I do think Ang addressed the DSF aspect, though ... going to DSF sounds like a giant PITA, ha ha ha. There are costs associated with getting there, parking, etc, and there is a pretty good time investment if you're going for a release and waiting on line starting at some ungodly hour. (Or waiting on a long line when the PTD flips to something good and everyone freaks out.) It's definitely a misnomer for someone to call those "at cost" pick-ups (unless they truly mean "at my costs") but they are still a far cry from the instant $75 mark-up that has occurred with some of the most popular pins!

Yeah, I've never seen someone claiming "at cost" and then adding ten to fifteen dollars for no reason. Then again, I never really bought anything from social media, if I were you I'd stick away from those claiming "at cost". Tessa's (Timeerkat) DSF pick up thread is probably your best bet for at cost pins.

Yeah I understand. I wish I lived near there, DSF gets such neat pins at times and I'm all the way over here at the east coast! >.<

And yeah. Like the Belle PTD pin and the Wall-E one..

I feel like newcomers to Pin trading are definitely at a disadvantage. ESPECIALLY if you don't live in Cali or Florida..

I felt that way as well, it really just takes time. You don't really need to worry about the latest, best, or most popular pins. Just collect what you like, and you'll meet great people along the way.

:wavey:Another thought, although I'm not sure, is that people might bribe friends to help them get the pins at DSF? Usually the LE pins are 1 per person per day, in order to get extras they have to get another person to join them. As a single it's tough to get extras, as well as get good #s for the releases. I'm lucky to have met some good people, so we try to help each other out, but if it's a set we all want, it's a tough day. "At cost", as mentioned above might be what the cost was to the seller and not necessarily just the pin. It's tough for newbies to figure this out, I'm still trying to understand and its been 4 years. As for living close to DSF and/or DLR, it has it's perks, BUT pins become an additional expense hard to keep up with, so many pretty pins!! Hope this helps, and welcome to an awesome hobby.

I don't do pin pickups - if I'm selling something it's because I need to clear out space in my trade bag.

But for reference here is my actual cost for a dsf pin.

Let's say it's a $16.95 retail price pin.

Add tax is another $1.55 approximately.

i spend about $8 in gas to get there plus $2 to park.

So the actual cost to me to go buy a "$16.95" dsf pin (completely setting aside the several hours I may have to wait in line to do so) is $28.50.

Personally, if I am at an Event/release and I have offered to pick up pins for folks I do NOT mark-up anything. It's what I paid plus S&H&I to the other Traders.
If I am there for ME, I do not add parking, gas, food and anything else for that event/day. I am there anyhow to get stuff for ME. I also pass along any AP discounts that might apply.

To me, it's just the good old Pin Karma that needs to be paid forward.

Thank you everyone for the answers. It's definitely helped enlighten me!

Thank you, pincrazy, I hope I can find people who will actually trade with little ol' me, haha.

I understand, Jabberwocky, that's fair.

That's super nice of you, figment!

Again, thanks everyone!
