I received a trade request and I really like the offer, the gentleman is (understandably!) concerned at my lack of references (we haven't been trading long). He has a long list of good references that go back quite far, I'm thinking it seems safe and reasonable to offer to send him my pin first (they're both LE pins, relatively low cost if you were to check ebay for them) as a good faith measure. That doesn't sound like a dumb move does it? He has a TON of references, I'm thinking this may be a risk I have to take for a while until I build up some references?
 
I believe that having the new trader send their pins first is fairly common practice. It sounds like you've checked him out and are confident with his references, so I'd say it's OK. I know when I first started trading, I sent my pins first a few times and I never had a problem.
 
You could also offer to use a go between which is like holding pins in escrow. You could ask a more seasoned trader (LOTS of references) to do that for you. You would both ship the pins to the agreed upon member and then they would ship them out from there once they were both received and confirmed the contents of the packages. Judy (tiggermickey) has done quite a few of these but is dealing with a family tragedy so she may not have the time to do it. Just throwing out ideas and of course those would build up your trading refs as well.

I don't think you need to use a go between if this person has already proven themselves to be a responsible trader. Send the pin to them and have them send once they receive it. They have too much to lose if they stiff you.
 
If it's fairly low value and doesn't have a scrapper issue, then you should be able to mail them a confirmation number for shipping and then they ship asap. They shouldn't hold your pin hostage until theirs arrives. If it is for high value, and your pin you're trading may have a scrapper warning, then maybe they could wait and inspect first.
