Series discussion #3: Mystery boxes & R/C boxes
yeah.. I resist temptaion as much as possible. once I buy one, I tend to want to buy the rest just to see whats inside. I was like that with crackerjack boxes as a kid too....

I love the mystery boxes, I always say I will not collect the entire series, but I always do. At least I don't go for the chasers

Well, if you go back to recent sets you get the Shorts set, Family Portrait set, and the candy confectionary set. Also, Vinylmation Park Starz mystery set (my favorite the copper Mr. Lincoln!) I think those were multiple park releases though. But if you exclude what you have already there are TONS of mystery / reveal/conceal sets, in the last year alone!

DLR had a Tiki event mystery set, HM What's This? set, Gears Up license Plates, Soundsational Parade set, and 1950's Mickey & Friends. (All within the last year.)

DCA had the Cars Land R/C set and then the DCA R/C set, and a Mad-T party set.

WDW had the Storybook Land R/C set and the Epcot 30th set, Animal Kingdom 15th set, 1970's set. Sorceror's of the MK set, Haunted Mansion graveyard set. (All that within the last year!!) Also they usually have sets for their events. Barnstormer, 13 event for example.

DCL has a few sets, Pirate set w/ coins (still available,) and towel/porthole mystery set (sold out.)

My question is regarding Limited Release sets with LE Chasers. Whay do they treat them like LR? Has anybody asked someone with some authority? The pixar boxes of course are the most popular example, but the Tiki 50th set had chasers that were LE 50. These pin sets are all sold as Limited Release. Shouldn't there be more of an emphasis on the LE part instead of the LR part?

Don't forget the Character Connection set, LE400 regulars & LE200 chasers.
WDW Mickey's Circus event had LE100 chasers that were side show attraction tickets.

WDI Star Tours set was initially mystery boxes, however the store had the pins inside each box on a label on the bottom. Then they sold them individually packaged for the D23 shopping days. They are LE200 and 2 chasers of LE100. But the second chaser, Bespin was accidentally put on the shelves as a normal LE200 while Mustafar was behind the counter and was told to guests that was the chaser.

Mustafar was not the chaser

While true Mark, Both your examples are LE all the way, and WDI has a long history of LE mystery boxes. The original question was LR with LE chasers

The first post says all mystery sets and R/C sets. Then it says, "more focus on LR sets with LE Chasers." But the title of the thread is "Mystery boxes & R/C boxes." WDI pins such as the Star Tours sets and most of their Sorceror Hat series are mystery boxes and fall into this category.

OOPs my bad, misread what you had said!

Yeah, Bespin and Mandalore are the LE 100 chasers. They are blue/gray versions of the same shape/design LE200 pin. Mandalore was sold in the mystery boxes randomly placed when the mystery sets first appeared. Bespin however was supposed to be sold 1 per person behind the counter at a D23 event. But the staff incorrectly grabbed Mustafar which was a normal LE200 pin and was selling that to people as if it were an LE100 chaser. Another Star Wars fan and I saw a blue/white Bespin and new it had to be a chaser as there was already a brown-ish Bespin. So we opened the package and saw it was in fact LE100. Almost all 100 of them sitting on the rack or in a tupperware bin on the table in the middle of MoG. They let us buy as many of them as we wanted because they didn't limit the number of the regular LE200 pins a person could buy.

Mandalore has always been more valuable because they went to WDI staff in the early days of the series and were very hard for people to trade or buy online. Initially only about 50 were released, then the other 50 a few weeks later. The Bespin chaser entirely went to probably 15 people who sold/traded them away easier than the Mandalore chaser. Also when people realized it was a 32 pin collection, some gave up making the second release of pins not as hyped/desired as the first release. The better known planets and designs have done better though. Hoth for example was a popula rone because it's well know and a nice big round design. Mandalore has the Mandalorian Skull logo on it so it's popular, also people like it because it was the chaser planet. Kashyyyk was also popular as Chewbacca's homeworld 2t/16w. Kessle has the Millenium Falcon so it's desired 7t/24w. Kamino is the world of the clone makers from the Clone Wars movie, it's 1t/23w. Endor is the home of the Ewoks, it's 2t/23w.

I was at WDi the day they sold them, the Mandalore chaser was behind the counter, I remember because I had someone buy me one in case they were gone before i got to the counter at like 180th in line. They still had a couple left by then and was able to get a second one.

ALL mystery and R/C boxes can be discussed here. I am just trying to add the info for LR/LE or just LE sets first.

DRB: excellent question about why they treat them as LR instead of drawing attention to the LE pins. I THINK (dont quote me on it)that they do this because there are more LR pins in the set. The LE chasers are there to literally MAKE you want to buy the boxes on the off chance you can get a low edition pin. Usually, the LE is also one of the most sought after characters for the set as well, which makes the draw to buy the box even greater.

I can see your point about the lure to get an LE pin, but lately the chasers have been of the entire set, not just 1 or two like the Train sets(both parks), and the gear up set Neither of those were the chasers LE BTW. with the star wars zodiacs, the Tiki 50th set, the upcoming villains, and even the Circus event last year. there was/will be a chaser for EACH pin. so in that regards, the idea of the chaser being the more sought after character cannot hold water. From a marketing standpoint, yes, the gamble of getting an LE is very persuasive to buyers. I've bought more boxes than I've wanted too because of this very reason alone.

One thing I love about pin trading is the thrill of the hunt. Looking for that elusive pin to go into my collection and in the process meeting new people and making new friends. That is one of the main reasons I love the mystery boxes. I buy a few and then try to finish the set. It's no fun to just go and buy a brick and be done. There's no challenge in that. I love it when they put out bigger sizes like the Zodiacs or the 13 pins coming up. there are more than 20 so you cannot just buy 1 brick and be done. LONG LIVE the HUNT!!!!!

What drive me, and others, nuts is when their stupid blog or the old merchandise site would clearly state LE sizes of LR pins but then pinpics or other traders refuse to acknowledge. The train pins are LE1600. The confections are like LE400 I think. But since they're stamped LR on the back they don't hold value. I'd buy them more if they'd stamp them regardless of edition size. Stamp LE3,000 if that's what they are. At least tell us if they are actually LE or if they are turly LR. (The difference I presume is that LR can be remade while LE is limited. LR's can be re-ordered to continue sales for the time period and demand drives edition sizes.) LR = less value than LE, period. So why not make your product more desirable to consumers? I say no more LR. It's either LE or OE, that's it. LR is supposed to me for limited-time-only. It's Disney hedging a bet on inventory. LR is supposed to drive some hysteria to buy quick before it's gone. But I buy less because it's worth less. Take notes Disney...

Wow, I am looking for info on this star tours set and even pinpics is missing some pictures and info....

so its an le200, 32 pin series, but 2 of them were le100 chasers. Released in 2 waves, the CM's at the stores were aware of which pins were in each box.

This series definately warrents more discussion.

Can one of you clarify, i got confused in the discussion above:
  1. Which 2 pins were the le100 chasers?
  2. What year/date did these get sold?

1. Bespin (91211)and Mandalore(88862) both had LE 100 chasers + regular LE 200 versions. Le 200 were in color, LE 100 were silver and blue.
2. They were sold Last year. as far as actual dates I do not know. the reason for the different releases, according to WDI employee, was that they had not yet opened all the boxes and affixed pins to cards instead. it was going to take some time to do.

Like most WDI pins, it was first sold to CM's and people who could get into MoG, early 2012 (released pins that are in the series between numbers 88855-89679 roughly.) Then on the first 2012 D23 shopping trip (April 14th 2012 I think,) they sold the mystery boxes, 2 pins per box, unlabled. Then, during a Golden Ticket event (Late May 2012,) they release another round of pins, 90274-90279 along with a few others I'm not 100% sure exactly which. Then, finally on June 23rd, 2012, at the next full D23 event, they released all of them on individual backer cards. They were since sold for a discounted price of $5 after some time at another D23 event eventhough the pins said $7.95 and they were not listed as being on sale, they rang up as $5. I do not believe any Mandalore chasers made it to June 23rd event. They were sold as 1 per person at one of the golden ticket events to like the first 25 or 50 people. The first wave of half the Mandalore chasers went to the early CM's. So perhaps drb195 you went to a golden ticket event?

I have the complete set. They have sold a completed framed set that was marked 1/1, but I'm sure if they were all AP's or not.

I was at WDI for each golden ticket and D23 last year, they are all kind of a blur right now.
I remember that frame set selling. It might have been the golden ticket event just before the June D23 when the Carsland Sorcerer hats were released. Don't know how many people were ahead of me, I do know when I got in register line, I was all the way to the door, which put a lot of people in front of me inside. I do not know how many more had already gone through when I got there, but they made it to me when I got up to the register with about 10 or so left.

The WDI Star Tours Mystery set was originally released on Jan 15th, 2012 at the Disneyana (formally NFFC) Show and Sale. The left overs were later brought over to the regular store. And as far as framed sets go, they made 2 framed sets with Artists Proofs, one went to the artist who designed the set. The AP sets were only marked AP in the bottom corner and not numbered in any way. After the other one sold, they ended up making more framed sets, at least 5 more that I know of. Those were just regular assembled sets and not APs at all.
