so many members want tobe sponsored for NBC event

Dose everyone try to get other members to pay the full price to get in the event??

Do members make deals for events like this or is it always a full charge thing??

Seems to me that there is still fun to be had at such a event, even if you do not collect or want what they have for sale. Asking full price just makes the pins or other event stuff cost an extra $90 with out getting any of the fun at the event.

Maybe I am wrong but just something I was thinking about. Reminds me of members that say they have to over charge for DSF pins due to all the time they had to wait in line. Not really true if you are already going for your self. IMO

I think it's not the fact of paying an extra $90 (or whatever happens to be the event price), it's basically asking someone (who may or may not want to go) to go to purchase the pins for you. Some people go to the event to just get the limited merchandise (which may or may not sell out); and some can't afford to fly or drive and get a hotel, so they don't mind sending someone (and paying that someone's entrance fee) to get the stuff for them.

I know at least for the Tiki Event, some of the attendees didn't care about the pins at all. They just wanted the artwork and/or figures and/or coasters, etc. If pin people here could hook up with those people (e.g. you get the non-pin merchandise and I get the pin merchandise), that would be perfect. But it's hard to find non-pin people in a pin forum; or at least, those people would have to work hard trying to find someone through other forums / facebook / etc. And I'm not sure for the RSPs if the person can choose their top 3 non-pin merchandise and top 3 pin merchandise OR if it's top 3 merchandise period (and with the limited edition size, whether it be LE500, LE250, LE1000, etc) it would be hard for the non-pin people to say "I'm putting all my wants above your pin wants".

So... basically sponsoring someone gives people who don't want to fly / drive / hotel a chance to get LE merchandise. Naturally, not all LE stuff sells out, but I know at least for the Tiki Event, the mystery boxes (which were just limited release and not LE?) sold out by the end of the event, so it's a gamble. Have someone get you the stuff you want (and pay their admission fee) OR risk not getting the stuff you want because it might be gone by the end of the event. Of course, there is always the option of buying it through secondary sources (e.g. auction sites) but again, it depends on how much of the stuff you want and how much you're willing to pay on top of cost?

I've been going to pin events for the past few years and I have always tried to have my wife get sponsored. She doesn't pin trade at all; I just like to have her company. So I ask for the sponsor to pay for the price of admission since she isn't doing anything but hanging with me. They get the gifts, the early bird pin, and any merchandise they want since they get access to the full rsp.

Although, there have been partial sponsors if they want spots on an rsp or if they don't want the gifts, etc.

Sponsoring is great for those across the country. It's cheaper for them to pay someone to go for them if they don't want to pay for flying, rental car, hotel, etc.

thanks for the info. I understand what you are saying. Just seems its one thing for members to ask some one to go just for them and a whole different thing for so many people to say they want to be sponsored to go.

Not sure if that makes since but just IMO.

From what I have seen, there are VERY few people willing to do anything at cost so seeing people "offer" to have someone pay their way into an event where they will not only be able to enjoy the goings on, they will be able to trade! I agree with you 100% that if really people are not "interested" in the swag but plan to stray there, hang out, trade and buy other merchandise it would be the decent thing to do would be splitting the cost.

I think that people are open to "sponsoring" at full price because it may still be cheaper than buying the swag at resell prices. Everyone wants the best prices but not everyone is willing to do the right or even the fair thing for that matter.

Sponsoring seems to be dying- back in 2007ish, it made a lot of sense to sponsor someone if you couldn't go. There were all sorts of hard-to-get pins, and a lot more freebies.

Nowadays, you can usually get the pins at cost (people pre-sell them to fill up their orders to get the GWP pins), and the freebies have dwindled to nothing. I would have loved to have been sponsored the last few years, since my RSPs were empty (I didn't buy a single thing at Florida Project or Reflections or Evil). But so many people offer, and so few people need it anymore...

If my husband decides to go for the first time this year, I may offer it again, but I'm not sure anyone would want to do it. Maybe if the pins and freebies were super awesome.

I know for us that there is very little reason to need 2 of everything esp if its some theme we dont collect and if there is someone who does its a guarantee to get everything for 'cost' and 'at once' and if you get a good sponsor they can piece together sets like the event mystery set where its 100x harder to do post event or get event exclusive mystery board pins..

For us its never a issue of being sponsored=go, no sponsor=not go its just nice to offer to help others out.. I agree it used to matter more in the past where things held a high value post event and even paying the 'full sponsor fee' was a 'bargin' compared to post event prices..

I know we plan to do both the DLR and WDW events this year and while available to be sponsored for both not stressing because it does seem more people are peddling this year...

thank you for your reply. So when you don't need or want 2 of everything and want to go to said event as a couple, do you offer to help members at a cut rate or only if you get full sponsorship?

I think this hobby would be more fun and full of Disney magic if we all help each other more often.

DLR does not put on pin/merchandise events on the scale of a WDW event. However, those of us who live in the Southern California area have plenty of opportunities to trade in/around the park and at locally organized trading events so I don't believe there are a lot of traders in the area that want to pay $90 just to trade unless you're a fan of NBC. This is especially true since we can make in-person trades throughout the year for free so why pay any amount just to trade?

I collect villain pins so last year, I sponsored a very cool trader for the villain event at WDW because I knew I wanted each and every villain pin being sold and knew I was going to spend a LOT of money on just pins. So factor in airfare, hotel, meals, etc. and the cost of those pins add up; I got all the pins I wanted and was very happy I didn't have to pay the inflated Ebay prices for the pins I received. At no time did I feel as if this person should pay a portion of the ticket because at the end of the day, they were doing me a favor. Sure, they got to trade off the boards and make trades with other traders at the event but to me, the event pins were more important than the experience of attending the actual event.

Next month, there is a "villain-esque" themed pin event planned for Disneyland Paris and I'm sponsoring someone to go because I want the pins, I don't want to pay inflated ebay prices for the pins, and I am NOT about to pay for a flight to Paris just to pick up a handful of pins. Again, I feel this person in Paris is doing me a favor. (AND, the Paris event includes a brunch that I thoroughly hope she enjoys!!)

I think offering yourself to be sponsored or saying 'yes' to someone who asks to sponsor you IS an act of the "Disney magic" you speak of.

So in regards to the NBC event at DLR, I'm looking to be sponsored for this event because I don't collect NBC and I don't plan on buying one piece of merchandise at the event. The only reason that draws me to this event is curiosity and the opportunity to trade AND the chance to help a NBC fan who is in the same boat I was in for the villain events. If it seems like a lot of people are offering to be sponsored, it's probably because they too are curious about the event and don't collect NBC. I think the key for people looking to be sponsored is to find that person who is a NBC fan and wants all the pins/merchandise... sponsoring someone just to buy 4 or 5 pins to use as traders isn't worth it. And if that's the case, then that's when you can discuss finding someone to attend the event and split the cost.

The last time I sponsored someone was before the events were greatly scaled back. For my money I got over half a dozen pins, a tshirt, event trinkets, and a few APs my person got off a trade board for me. All that was in addition to getting the RSP items. I thought it was worth what I paid. However, with the scaled back events (especially in DLR) your $90 only guarantees you 1 pin and a tshirt (there could always be surprise gifts).

It it all comes down to how things are worked out between the two parties. Back when the events were bigger I did see some demands like pay for my parking, let me keep the shirt, etc. but I haven't seen that the last few years. Plus the fact that most merchandise is still available after the event nowadays has slowed down the sponsorships.

diablo put it best. We can see the same pin traders at the park for free. I went to the tiki event last year. Ninety percent of the people were there specifically there for Tiki merchandise and to meet SHAG, not for pins. The ballroom was only ten percent full of traders....the same ones I see at the parks and don't trade with.
