So I have my main collection, which is Steamboat Willie, and I have my secondary collection, which is Indiana Jones, when there aren't any new Steamboat Willie pins which happen most years (More pins this year than the past 2 years). But I want to start another collection... But I have no idea what to collect... I was thinking Lion King or Monsters Inc. or NBC but I don't know which one... Or a different one than all three of these... I just can't decide... I was hoping I could get some advice from more experienced traders on which would be the best to start and why.

Thanks,

Corvyn

Well, I think it depends, firstly, on which of those is your favorite . That's how I choose mine. If you like them all fairly equally, maybe think about whether or not you plan on being a completist. There are SO many, simply beautiful, Lion King pins... Many of which are VERY pricey. There seems to be a HUGE amount of NBC pins, so that could be a nice long journey, and keep you interested for quite some time. Monsters Inc. seems to also have a good amount of pins, but at more affordable prices for them. Now, that being said, I don't personally collect any of those themes and could be completely off base

Just collect the pins you like from MU, Lion King, and NBC. I don't collect any of those pins but my main collection is Snow White and my secondary collection is Pocahontas. I have some misc pins of my favorite movies because I think the pins are pretty or they mean something to me.

From somebody who focuses collections quite a bit, but still collects a number of themes; pick your favourites... even limit what characters you collect from a movie if money is an issue. Focusing collections is a great way to limit it, but also collect what is most important to you.

For example, WIR is my favourite Disney movie... but I only collect pins of King Candy from it. Another example of focusing even more; I collect the Mad Hatter... but only pins of him without any other characters. Doesn't have to be character based either; I collect Disney Trains... but have recently decided to change the collection a bit and only collect train pins if there's no characters on the pin.

It means you can collect a number of themes without it getting too crazy expensive trying to find every pin from a movie or ride. Of course... I'm still trying to find all the Phantom Manor pins...

That was a long post to type on a tablet...

As you probably know from collecting Steamboat Willie, it's actually kind of fun to collect a more obscure theme. It certainly helps to limit the amount you're going to spend on it, and it's a neat conversation starter. Stay away from the popular things with a bazillion pins unless, as Turbo-tastic said, you can limit it to a particular character or theme. For example, Jack Skellington on Disneyland rides, or only Randall pins. You could also do something that evolves out from your existing collection, like moving from Steamboat Willie to Plane Crazy or any black-and-white Disney cartoon or character (I know a good number of those came out in the millennium sets). What about another ride that you like? Or an area of a park? Or some obscure thing that might not be your MOST favourite but would make for an interesting collection?

My own collection is painfully obscure: Jules Verne-related pins WITH Disney characters on them. So not JUST 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or Space Mountain: Mission 2, but those pins with Mickey and Donald on them I'm basically done it too, so I've been considering starting a new collection, but I've hummed and hawed over it for months now, and can't settle on Main Street USA, Fantasia, or a handful of the Peter Pan pins I really like (even though Peter Pan isn't one of my MOST favourite Disney movies, I really like some of the pins they've made for it).

I don’t collect Monsters Inc, but I collect Boo FROM Monsters Inc. And even with limiting myself to that character, I have A LOT of pins of her!

I have many other pins, too, don’t get me wrong--it’s not only Boo. But after years, I’ve finally limited myself--Boo, Club 33, Magic Music Days (pretty finished except for Paris), and Minnie’s Moonlit Madness (I think they stopped in 2011. At least, that’s the last pin I’ve found.)

So I have A LOT of pins to get rid of and relatively few on my wants list. Which means trading is really hard--while some may want what I have, they don’t have what I want. But I’m VERY willing to trade quite a few of mine for a single pin. I think I’ll have to resort to ebay to sell them. But I need to zap someone, so I have to look up how to do that.
