Starting new collection

Since I have joined the forum here just over a week ago, I have seen a lot of pins that I was not aware of simply because I am out in Utah so I only get to Disney once every couple of years. With that I have seen the El Capitan Marquee pins and I have been greatly intrigued to start to collect any of those pins. Partly because I am a huge movie fan as I have my own movie review blog, I have heard these pins are extremely popular at the present. My question to the forum is am I wasting my time wanting these based on the prices? I have never paid more then 15 dollars for a pin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am also In Utah and it is difficult to get DSF pins. But lots of the marquee's are reasonably priced and then there are a handful that are priced in the stratosphere. If you are a completionist and have to have everyone of them, you will run into some big money. But you could start slow, get the ones that are accessible and work your way up. There is another forum member that collects only marquees and he is very knowledgeable. He even wrote up a how to guide for collecting marquees. His name is MarkHeardJr and you may want to look him up.

You will be paying a lot more than $15 for any of the pins unless you get really lucky on ebay or can be at DSF for the release. That being said, you can get some of them for $25. Some have hit over $500. I'm not sure if any have hit over $1000 yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they have.

Ooohh! Good luck! I think with the Marquees you really need to go do it one pin at a time! Some of the recent ones sell for $30, but as stated above the prices are really high right now, hopefully the come down in the future! I would suggest trying to trade for them first before you buy! xx

If you're okay with being in it for the long haul, then you might be okay. Pins spike, then drop, then sometimes spike again...Jessica DA LE 100s, which were some of the biggest Grails in their days, would go for $300, then drop to a little over $100. Stuff goes up and down all the time. So while you scope up the cheaper ones, maybe the craze will die down and the prices on the more desirable pins might drop some.

That said, your hard limit of $15 will definitely change over time. I used to flinch at $30, then $50, then $75, then $100- now, I have so few Wants that I'm only really buying Grails once every year and a half, so I can afford to do what I have to to get them. So sometimes it's between getting multiple cheaper pins, or getting one really in-demand pin you want.

That said, make sure you search Pinpics for other move/film related pins...there are quite a few out there besides the marquee collection. Good luck on whatever you decide to do, and remember, don't beat yourself up if you miss out on a pin- they'll come around again, and sometimes, for a better price!

Everyone thanks for all the advice, it has helped me to decide that the marquee pins can be collected and a lot of them have reasonable prices.

As a marquee collector, i can tell you they are very difficult and very expensive. The guy to talk to is actually Nathan95. He's got a full set and was able to get them all in about a years time, mostly through trading.

There are plenty of marquees at reasonable prices. It's the older ones that get hard to find and expensive. To do this collection you'll need patience and you'll need to be prepared to spend a bit for some of the bigger ones (Up, Tangled, Wall-E, Enchanted) as those with them would rather sell than trade.
