Why are PTDS such good traders?

Perhaps the Low edition sizes? Popular and obscure characters that are not often made into pins?

When they first came out no one wanted them. In fact DSF pins were kind of hit and miss.

Before it was the Ghiradelhi shop I used to take my grandma for lunch. There was only one surprise PTD offered at a time and if it ran out no one jumped to the flip.

But the progression of DSF pins becoming more popular (Up, Tangled and Frozen have forced this to the extremes) and more people realizing they can make a quick buck off of them (You can usually make 10$ of profit from a PTD, as none of them generally sell for less then 25 minimum, but you can usually get back what you paid.)

Also if you buy two PTD often enough, you can sell one to cover the cost of both, and now you have a trader for free.

With all of this, these once unwanted, low LE pins became more sought after since you can't just ask your friend anymore for cheap pickups. the time and effort for these has raised the price too, so as prices stabilize in the 30 - 40 range per pin even if it's an unwanted character, that still means it's value is 30 - 40$ and it must be treated as so when trading.

I don't have any yet but I think they are popular too because they pull out some rather forgotten characters. Some characters that would hardly get a pin from their film or series now get their own single pin and it's new and limited! :) It's a good tactic.

They are popular right now...they haven't always been such great traders, nor selling for such high prices! :) They are all the craze right now...a lot more difficult to get being release only at ONE store in the whole world, and low(er) edition sizes, so everyone wants to get their hands on them lately! ;) They will fade out eventually...just like many of us have watched the pervious craze do. :)

I think they make good traders (rather than just financial investments for those wishing to resell) because they seem to fit a lot of wants for collectors. There are people who don't like words on their pins, there are people who collect obscure characters and PTDs often use those, not to mention seeing your favorite character with ice cream is absolutely adorable. I have two myself (Olivia from GMD and Jim from Treasure Planet) and I have no intention of ever selling either.

On the one hand I really hope the PTDs keep going, for people who want pins of their favorite characters, but on the other I hope the rules for them get a little stricter so the scalpers can shove off and find something new to buzz around.

Heck, if I know. In my pin bag, I have several pins that are also LE300, same size as PTDs, feature characters that I know people collect, no words...And in some cases there are only 12 people that want them. The popular one has 64 wants.

I'd like to know, especially among the last year's worth of releases, how many have found permanent homes vs how many are in people's trade bags, wishfully hoping they can be flipped to get the pins someone REALLY wants.

I honestly didn't know about PTD's until I found the website. If I had known earlier, I probably would have tried to make them a large big of my collection, because I just love the idea! I mean, who doesn't love ice cream? And as said above, I think that they fit a lot of collections for other collectors too.

I'm still kicking myself for not knowing about these around a year and a half ago. I was staying a block away from Hollywood Blvd and the DSSH store for an entire week. There were probably at least two flips and tons of opportunities to go get some pins. Oh well!

Wow, I am so glad you asked this question. Being from Florida, I don't think I had even heard of them until I joined this Forum, and then I see everyone on here (or at least the California people) are crazy over them. I assume it's because they are issued in small batches. But personally I am not that crazy about pins that feature my favorite characters with ice cream, as it sort of takes them out of their original context.

I think the Disney Soda Fountain also offers other, non ice cream design, pins, which are very nice, but not necessarily better than LE pins from elsewhere except for the super low edition sizes.

Honestly....I like them because they are usually really high quality pins, and, as was mentioned above, they are only released at one store and have more obscure characters. I hate when I see people selling them for a profit....honestly it kinda bugs me when people do that for any pins. I'm of the belief that if you are going there anyway and have the opportunity to help somebody else out AT COST, you should. Same thing goes for event pins too. I mean if you are going out of your way to get pins for someone else and non for yourself...okay maybe a convenience fee but it shouldn't be 100+ dollars..Just my opinion.

I collect Disney "food" pins as one of my themes in the beginning no one collected them and at today's prices on ebay glad I have a lot of the older ones at cost. I also think with ds.com getting rid of the regular LE 100 pin sets releases and other LE pins like they used to have it also helped turn people on to DSF as another source for getting pins that are low editions

I hear you and I somewhat agree. I hate seeing the prices so high for some of these but on the other hand, it also costs me about $28 total for the pin, parking, gas money and over an hour of driving down and back ... as well as and sometimes and hour or so of waiting in line. So "AT COST" can vary. I would say $25 -$30 is not an unreasonable asking price as a minimum..

I mainly collect the PTDs that fit in with our collections. Mulan, of course, and I mainly collect her by herself or with her parents, although I did make an exception for Li Shang (did not make an exception for Mushu). We have, I think, all of the BATB ones (hopefully).

At cost to me includes shipping but that is about it...because I'm going for e as well so my time is for me, I'm just doing a favor

People love collecting ongoing sets.

If it was announced tomorrow that there would be no more PTDs, the prices and number of collectors would drop as people moved onto the next hot current set. And then they would be mostly forgotten except for those looking to finish off sets/characters. See: PODMs Or Reveal/Conceal princessses which were the hottest pins in town. Until the series stopped. Rare ones still retain value but nobody raves about them anymore. They stopped being THE pin currency which they were while they were still being sold.
