I'm not a person to unload on public forums, but you guys feel like family, and I kind of need to vent a little. As some may know, I recently had a root canal and took, for the first time in my life (and entirely against my better judgment), antibiotics because of it. Not only did I have an allergic reaction to the antis, but now, two weeks later, I've been knocked down by severe diarrhea and pain in my gut. I figured it might just be my IBS acting up, or the usual after effects of antis, but it kept getting worse. I can't eat anything at all without pain and recursion of symptoms. I went to the doc today and she's fairly sure it's a moderate to severe c.diff. infection. Sent in a sample, and waiting to hear back, trying to survive on tea, water, and gatorade.

Can I just say how much I hate this world where we're so impatient and worried that we prescribe antis for everything?

Anyway, today I got two packages, both of which were expected but which had such heartfelt and generous gifts inside that my heart near exploded. First up is @krand1276 with whom I traded recently for the Chernabog and the BatB pin (which was a bit of a zap in and of itself!). But also included was the Fantasia pin and some BatB trading cards as zaps!!! How cool is that? I didn't even know they existed! And one is a SCRATCH OFF!!! WHAT?!?!?! What the what?!?!? Thank you so much Krand, for both a great trade and a great zap!

Then we have the phenomenal @Poohlady5 who won my auction for the Oliver Postcard. She sent along the winning pins - Merida Carousel pin, which so much prettier in person, and the pin hat - but also included some amazing Pooh keychains and charms and buttons! All of them are so sweet and cute, but the button (top one) is definitely my favorite! Thank you so much for the very thoughtful gifts! I can't wait to find them homes in my displays.

    (1) Congrats on the awesome gifties!

    (2) Dude, that big-time sucks. I hope it's just bad side effects that clear up soon. If it's C-diff ... woof. Be prepared, because they'll give you ... antibiotics. Probably metronidazole (maybe vancomycin, but it's more expensive and often reserved for cases that don't respond to metronidazole). And with metronidazole, if you even sniff alcohol, you'll be violently ill. Not that you're in a place to go bar-hopping anyway, ha, but take the warnings seriously. It's a very effective drug but must be respected. :p

Hope you are feeling better soon!!!!

Thanks! And thanks for the info! I'm hoping they give me the more expensive one because apparently the re-infection rate is lower with it. But that's not my call... As an avid researcher and self-diagnoser, all of my symptoms are lining up fairly well with a moderate case of c.diff. As much as I hate to admit that. :/

Omg, I'm so sorry to hear that you're ill! I hope you feel better soon. Glad you enjoyed those cards. My husband found them in one of the boxes from the card shop he bought.

I'm still so happy that BatB pin has a good home!

Not that this thread is really for this, but the test did come back as c.diff positive. New antibiotic to fix the problem of the old one. See how this goes...

Booooo. But at least you have a prompt answer and treatment. There is no way to get rid of C-diff without antibiotics, and you REALLY don't want that running amok for any longer than it already has.

The problem with dental procedures is that you're darned if you do and darned if you don't. Even dentists have mixed opinions about prophylactic antibiotics ... You have an open wound in your mouth, which is loaded with bacteria on a good day (ha). If the infection risk is low, you're taking antibiotics that are more likely to cause side effects (not always this bad) than to prevent an infection. But if you forego the antibiotics and DO develop an infection in your mouth ... those can get out of hand quickly and cause serious sequelae that are way worse than minor GI side effects. (Google "infective endocarditis" next time you want to lose sleep over a rare but serious complication of a tooth infection left unaddressed. HA.)

Either way, you most assuredly got the worst end of this deal. I'm so sorry. You will hopefully see dramatic improvement in the first few days of treatment, but PLEASE in this case do not be tempted to stop taking the antibiotics as soon as you "feel better." C-diff is extremely nasty and you want to be 100% sure it is GONE rather than take a chance on it rebelling. It's already difficult to treat (you are young and otherwise healthy and promptly addressing it, so that's a general comment, not a "your case" comment) and if it gets the opportunity to build resistance to the few drugs that can overpower it, we're all doomed. :p

On that dramatic note, ha ha, I wish you speedy recovery!!!! And great comfort in the meantime!

I've been reading a lot about the argument within the dental community about antis. It's pretty interesting, and the resulting infections can certainly be terrible. From what I've found, though the ADA and AHA have pretty much retracted the prophylactic suggestion for a number of reasons.

I'm hoping I can convince my doc to prescribe me Dificid rather than metronidazole, as it may be better for my specific problem with IBS, since it's far more targeted to c.diff (that'd be a no). Broad spectrum antis scare me. lol.

Thanks everyone for your kind words!

Oh man just read this thread, so sorry to hear about it! Man, the dentist is one of the scariest places to me...and root canal? I'd have a heart attack first if I needed one. Kudos to you for enduring that part Corey! The aftermath does suck though. I'm gonna have to go Google half of everything said though.

On the brighter side, congrats on your goodies! That Batb pin is beautiful!

The problem won't necessarily be your doc ... it will be what your insurance will allow. Wamp-wamp-waaaamp. But hopefully the IBS history will be sufficient justification for not starting with metronidazole.

Either way, hopefully soon you will ONLY be stressing about the next great pin you want to add to your collection!!!!! <3

Man, my condolences for the amount of suckage you have been enduring, but hopefully a few pins helps.
I got a couple zaps on the weekend, and they sure improved my mood with all the bad going on!
