Bought this lovely Darling children pin at an antique mall today along with some other pins that are definitely real. Unfortunately the back doesn't match most reference pictures and the pin back isn't the usual rubber mickey-shaped one so I think I got duped. :( The linework is still very nice and the colors are perfect so it looks just fine, but I did pay $10 for it so in my heart of hearts I'm hoping it's some kind of misprint/early version. (I should've known better, looking at the signs now haha...)

I'd love any input, but I'm already expecting bad news :(

I'm pretty sure this one hasn't been counterfeited. It pre-dates the appearance of scrappers by several years. But there are likely 2 versions of this pin. The one that was originally released as a "lanyard refresher" pin. And then the one that was released for sale. The one I have, is the refresher one, collected at the time it was available and it has the 2000 backstamp. So what you need to find, is someone who bought it when it was sold. The waffle pattern is appropriate, for that era. And later releases would have had an updated backstamp and not the 2000 one, because the Millennium celebration had concluded.

And it wouldn't have had a rubber Mickey because those didn't exist back then. The pin back would have either been a gold butterfly type, or a plain black rubber. I think more likely the gold butterfly, because this was still pretty early in pin trading.

Thank you so much!!! Lotsa interesting info, wow. :0 It came with a plain black rubber backer, but it's possible the seller changed it so who knows. I guess it's time to hunt down one of the sold versions online to compare!

I actually just did that. There is one currently for sale from Alices-house-of-treasures. This is a long time seller. The back of that pin looks like yours. There is also another one with original card. No photo of the back of the pin, but they did take one of the card and it does have the plain rubber back. The is also another auction that shows one with the 2002 backstamp. So there are at least 3 "runs" of the pin, and I think yours is the 2nd.

So I think you are good.

@hopemax has made an extensive study of counterfeits, so if she says you're good, you're good. :)

Thank you!! I love the pretty periwinkle-y background. <3
