Hiya i was just wandering how do you guys decide which themes you collect?

When i first started collected pins i picked up the one i wanted and even some pins that i don't want just so i started to have these great pin things. Now however i want to be smarter on which pins i collect as i don't have all the money in the world to say the least and lately i've discovered these all new ways to get really cool pins but i need to tone it down but I just don’t know how to decide lol Just today i nearly wanted to start new themes just born out of one cool looking pin. So i need some advice lol

How do you choose which pins to collect as your theme?
Do you think it is even important to have a theme in your pin collection?
And what about your traders? Will you collect any pin that comes along just so you have trading power to get the pins you want or do you buy traders that you yourself would like?

I'm hoping that this will turn out to be an interesting discussion (and i can learn from you wise pin masters lol)

:) I think it varies from person to person. I collect 12 different themes in total, 9 of which are simply based around my favorite Disney characters. So that's Cheshire Cat, Gaston, Scar, Chernabog, Zero, Mufasa, Mrs Jumbo, Ratigan, Shere Khan. The others are Fantasia (specifically the Pastoral Symphony and Dance of the Hours), Princess and the Frog (although I'm managing to limit myself to Naveen, Facilier and Louis) and Characters dressed as other characters. I collect all of these themes just because I like them. Sure, I have other favorite characters, but these are the top ones.

I've always been a big Disney fan, so although these are the only things I consider myself a collector of, I still have tonnes of other pins featuring many other characters. I have 634 listings on PinPics, and of those, only around 230 are pins from my actual collections. The rest are pins that I like because I'm a Disney fan. It's really hard to reign in, but I have tried.

I consider myself as a collector of Nightmare Before Christmas pins, however in reality only about 20% of my entire collection relates to this theme. I also like to collect The Lion King, Bugs Life, Toy Story, Disney Villains etc. However I have a ton of pins that aren't related to these themes whatsoever.
Like masamune said I am a disney fan and find that I have pins that remind me of favourite films, characters etc or I just simply like them. I have never watched Princess and the Frog (not yet anyway) but I am definately going to get the upcoming UK pin as I like the design!

I'm pretty convinced that you will naturally see yourself collecting certain pins without having to force yourself to choose themes now.

Happy Trading :)

Martin

Hahaha I think im one of a minority among the pin community who hasnt branched out to collect everything I like for Disney as when I started I wanted one of each character from each of the films which then I started on Stitch pins....then within a week I had gone onto wanting to collect UP pins (didnt expect them to so hard to get as I was new) and for me thats where it kind of ended as those two themes keep me on my toes as it is, I dont think I would cope spreading out XD

from anyone that has met me or know me, they will tell you Im strict and stick to what I collect, not stitch or UP then its not in my collection :P

I like to collect mainly Haunted Mansion pins only with the exception of buying most of the Dateline Disneyland pins & sets. I picked the HM theme because that's my favorite ride in DLR. I LOVED the O-Pin house pins they released last year!

I usually use pepper spray and an electrical fence to control my pins. Sometimes when they act unruly, I have to take out the cattle prod.

Like many people here, I collect a specific theme(s). You can probably tell what the main one is. It all depends on what you think looks nice and want for part of your collection. There are plenty of Haunted Mansion pins out there that I don't want because they just don't do it for me. Each person, and I'm assuming you as well, likes a specific movie/ride/character. The point of pin collecting is not buying and gathering every pin of a specific subject (although for some, this is what they like to do. I'm sure they have much bigger wallets than me!) but to buy pins that you actually like. Yep, specific pins can be very popular, and it can be easy to be swept up with all the commotion surrounding them (*COUGH*Stich*COUGH*Jessica*COUGH*Tink*COUGH*) but if it's not a pin you really want, other than the fact that everyone else wants it, why get it? Maybe as a trader, but then it depends on the cost and a bunch of other factors.

Having a specific theme to your collection really isn't that important (in my opinion). I might have more random pins than I do of my Haunted Mansion pins. That's because I bought pins that I like. Your likes may lead you down the path of a specific theme, but that doesn't mean you have to stick to those pins.

I'll admit I bought some Stitch and Tink pins for traders. But only a few. Not that I hate them or anything. I do have some stitch in my collection. Sometimes it can be worth it to buy a few to use as traders, but don't just buy pins to trade. If you're on a budget with pins like I am, save up and buy pins that you want for your collection. I may not trade very often as my amount of traders is on the low side, but all the pins I have are ones that I like and I can tell you where I got each one and why I like it.

(Hope I didn't offend any stitch/tink/jessica fans out there!)

:nono: offended stitch....

I agree though I collect stitch and think some look weird and are not my taste, at first I added random and got a few stitch pins which are now in the maybe trade/keep pile as Im in 2 minds about them now..

I dont have deep pockets to afford all pins, reason why UP took over from stitch as they soon turned into my main focus and have all of them so far but thats over months tracking them down and sacrificing many stitch pins which now I am after XD...

I was "lucky" in that sense - I started collecting pins as an extension of my general Wonderland collection, so while other pins over the years have caught my eye, the only ones I collect and keep are Wonderland. :)

CONTROL???? Who has that???? I am still trying to figure out what "limit" means!!!

My collection is entirely made up of Cast Lanyard & Hidden Mickey pins from WDW, DLR, DLP & UKDS. Character pins really do not interest me nor due LE's etc. I'm very happy with what I have & by just focusing on "sets" gives me a feeling of success whem I get the last pin! Also being in the UK there's no panic to obtain the new releases every week/month, I just sit & wait for news of the new HM sets & arrange trips accordingly!

when we started, we collected any pin and then after about 500 pins and $4,000.00 I decided we needed to focus on what we really like.
I am rides & Attractions and Chip & Dale
Max is Star Wars and Vinylmations
Lizzie is Dalmatians and cute Dogs

Of course when a pin does something for us, we get it but we try to stay focused.
The kids now realize they can trades pins thay have for pins they want so the spemding has dropped dramatically (Thank God)

Hiya i was just wandering how do you guys decide which themes you collect?
I collect Sleeping Beauty because it's my favorite Disney movie, 101 Dalmatians because I had a dog that looked like Perdita, and Beauty and the Beast because I loved the movie as a child. My misc pins I collect for sentimental reasons so it would be tough to explain.

How do you choose which pins to collect as your theme?
Most people collect their favorite characters/movies/rides, but you can make almost anything into a theme. Sometimes it could be something for sentimental reasons, or because you like something non-Disney related but found pins that relate to it (ie. military pins) or even something as simple as a certain color.

Do you think it is even important to have a theme in your pin collection?
I think it's important because it gives you focus and something to aim for. And if not you'll spend tons of money and time on pins you may like at one time then realize you don't really like them after all. You don't have to be completely strict just make sure you really like the pins you're collecting.

And what about your traders? Will you collect any pin that comes along just so you have trading power to get the pins you want or do you buy traders that you yourself would like?
My traders are a very different story. Some of them are from when I slimmed down my collection so technically I liked it at one time but for the most part, I only buy traders that I know other people would want, not necessarily what I like.

Choosing pins for your traders is tough since everyone's tastes are different. For me, I try to have traders that fulfill a couple requirements: Good design. Now, I know this is subjective, but considering a pin's subject, I want the artwork to look the way it "should." Interesting perspectives on common designs are also a plus. Also, un-commonality. This doesn't necessarily mean "rare," but something you don't see all the time. If you attend pin trading events often, say at least once a month, you tend to see the same stuff from the same traders. It's nice to have something different to offer people. Of course, having "popular" pins doesn't hurt, but if they don't move, I start trading easier for them. These are also the reasons I try to purge my trader bag of pins that no one has shown interest in or I haven't been successful with trading online. Every six months or so, I get on a "I'm sick of looking at this pin" kick and either sell those pins or try and trade them for one of my easier-to-obtain wants. I always remind myself that my pins aren't gold, they're just colored that way.

Thank you for all your great advise!
I was looking at my whole collection last night (Not a hard task considering how many pins i have) and its maybe not as bad as i believe it is. I mean i have a definite theme of Minnie mouse however like YoSoyAhPuch and Stitch2814 there is such a pool of pins in that area that i can be picky with which ones i want beside it would be insane to try and be a completive in that area lol

and i do notice some small themes of pins that i have already such as Kim Possible which i strongly doubt there will be a influx of pins in that area so i can be a completive with that over time to get the last few i need. And there are a few like Chaboo has that i have for sentimental reasons they wouldn't be ones i myself would pick up like the green alien pins from toy story but because of who bought it i wouldn't get rid of it for anything. And there are small number i wouldn't get rid of because i'm not sure whether there scappers or not, So I keep them.

I think i should just relax and stop worrying over it and let it form naturally what i want to collect and just try to think do I really want this when go buy/trade. =)

I've got another squestion if i may how do you guys gain such large number of traders? is it just with time and alot of money or is there a screact disney way of gaining lots of disney traders such as wish upon of a star (but i got a feeling i already know the answer lol)

For me personally I buy my traders and yes that can get expensive but I only buy from time to time since my wants list is small and if I see a pin I need on ebay etc I will buy it rather than using that money to buy traders.

I dont buy UK pins for traders as for me personally I dont think there good enough as traders as they are not popular enough, we have a few thats been popular and highly wanted but not many and when there looks like to be a popular pin coming out, quite a few UK traders buy one and add it to their trades list and im my own words - Ruin the wants/trades ratio as if you look through UK pins and look at the wants/trades more often than not thereare more people trading than to wanting them and thats to people over buying.

For me as to regards to your question I purchase DS.com, Cheap PTN and other pins that may be cheap but highly wanted..I also look at what members are selling and if its a $70 trader but would be a good trader then Id buy it..but I guess to each his own XD

I'm going by "it's shiny, it's pretty, I want it." LOL

I started off with my favorite characters, which would be Tink, the 'munks and Eeyore. But like thejessta has said: in the end it is all about design. I got way too many pins in my collection now which I got because I liked the design.

All my trade pins are basically what the rest of the family have traded for on our last couple of visits & we've decided to trade/sell them out. Some will be used for DLP later this month, the remainder will remain as trade pins until our next trip to WDW in April & DLR in August, whereby hopefully there'll be a new Hidden Mickey sets out by then. The odd trade may take place using the DPF or Pinpics so I'll always keep some back.

When we run low then we buy starter packs or pins from the outlets when we visit

I'm sort of a mix of collecting. I would NEVER part with my Wonderland collection, but I've spead out so much with other pins it's hard to tell what I collect. Like Spiffie - hubby would love it if I learned the word "limit". My pins pretty much are in control and between the pins and the cats I might be booted out of the house:) I definitely did old Fantasia pins and they are part of a storyboard. One I frame a storyboard, I will trade away the rest of the pins I'm not going to use. I have over 3,300 pins and I don't see how anyone can manage more. I need HELP!!

My pin collection controls me :(

Amen to that!!! Lol

I find it hard to control my collection really. I'm currently collecting Princess & the Frog (trying to get them all), Tangled (trying to get them all), Stitch (anything I like), UK pins, Zero, Jessica, Dug, Tink (although I've toned this collection down a little), St Patrick's Day and pretty much any pin I see that I like I want!

I'm trying to tone it down a bit, but the problem is I see a pin I like and then think I ought to try collecting the whole series or something.

I don't know how Danny manages to be so strict, but then when you're collecting Up you need to keep all the money you can just in case there's a mystery set or something! Lol.

I think the best advice would be to choose a few themes you like and then only look for pins related to those. Don't browse through pinpics, just specifically search for pisn related to your chosen themes. that way you should minimise the temptation!

It's too late for me to get this obsession under control though! Good luck! :D

lol cheers anastasia! i think your right try to control that roving eye and pins i don’t know about can’t hurt my bank balance =)

hehe the wondering eye quite harmful when you dont trawl through pinpics but you can be caught when you least expect it especially on forums as you will look at other peoples collection or see their HG and think 'hmmm thats a nice pin I want that now' XD

But there is a positive side to trawling through pinpics as Ive found quite a few bargains on ebay which Ive used for traders, and it pays to know whats rare etc and to spot it and get it for trading quite cheaply is great..but then that positive has a bad side as Ive had to either stay awake or wake up at early hours to bid on pins to get them cheap XD
