I've gotten 5 scrappers in trades in the last month. Are people truly unaware they are scrappers and these are just honest mistakes? Does anyone else have this problem?
 
Yeah at disneyland last week I had a kid trading scrappers I told him and he didn't care. Sometimes I won't say anything or ill just say that I'm not interested thanks anyways
 
2 were HM the other 3 were just reg pins. I haven't had this issue with any of the 3D pins. These were all online trades which makes it really frustrating. I don't want to go to the trouble of trying to get my pin back for the scrappers (knowingly shipping fakes or counterfeits is a Federal offense in the US to boot). These pins have a dull finish, dips in the enamel, scratches on the metal, to me really obvious. Am I expecting too much? Is this normal?

Unfortunately, I do believe that many of the traders using the Pinpics trade assistant aren't even aware they have scrappers. But I have had people with huge pin collections who have been trading a long time and who have tons of good references on DizPins send me obvious scrappers. I wonder if they think that I won't be aware of scrappers because I'm new to the hobby. It is certainly frustrating. I keep a log book of every trade and when someone sends me a scrapper, I note it in the book and never trade with them again. I have also returned pins and required them to send my pin back in most cases. But it annoys me to pay shipping both ways and end up where I started pinwise. I admit that I have kept the scrappers once or twice because I wanted to use them for a craft project and I was fed up with having to return pins. I trade much more carefully and less frequently now.
 
I do not do online trades for hidden mickeys or any other pin that has a scrapper alert. I have very few pins in my wants that have scrapper alerts. For the most part if there is an alert then I don't want it.
 
I have received so many hidden mickeys scrappers through online trading that I just assume when I trade for one it will be fake, then if it is real I can be surprised :) Being a ways away from the park, I really have no other option when trying to complete my DLR collections. Luckily there have been plenty on the boards here for sale, so I am down to one left for past collections. Unfortunately scrappers are so prevalent now that it's just not worth getting upset over, unless of course it is a high value pin. It's not even worth leaving negative feedback on eBay anymore since the sellers don't care or somehow they get it removed since I see plenty of scrapper sellers with 100% feedback.
 
I received one which was a scrapper AND it had very obvious defects. He has a number of references, including 2 from highly-regarded members of this forum (as far as I know he is not on DPF himself). I was prepared to assume that he didn't know he was sending me a scrapper, but no one could have packed up that pin without seeing the defects. I emailed him about the pin a few times over the course of a couple of weeks but he didn't respond. ....I finally opened a Pinpics complaint, and he emailed me within about 3 minutes. I sent him back the scrapper and he sent me a different pin. I wasn't happy about it, especially with having to pay shipping twice, and I told him so, but all I could really do is add him to my "do not trade" list.
 
I bought a boxed pin on the bay and the seller forgot to ship it, I guess as her way of apologising the sent me a couple pins along with the boxed pin, one had the backer card and was obviously a authentic pin but the other had no backer card and was a obvious scrapper of the disney villain collection Cruella. It was so poorly made. I didn't say anything because it was an apology zap. but now I know the seller also possibly sells scrappers, so if I buy from this seller again I will be aware.
 
So trading scrappers is acceptable? I've been throwing them away - I should trade them? Is there a way to add a system that classifies pins so we know what we're trading / getting? Maybe a set up like:
Legit pin:
A+ - perfect condition on card
A perfect condition - no card
B - etc thru F
Counterfeit:
A - perfect condition
B - etc thru F
Scrapper:
A - best condition possible - list defects
B - etc thru F

Would something like this help or hinder the process?
 
I guess what I'm getting at wit hthe above post is it would be a much more honest way of trading - if you're desperate for a pin and someone has it but at least tells you it's a B condition scrapper you've can make an informed decision if you really want the pin or not.
 
Don't trade hidden mickeys on pinpics. If those trades were at the park, you can usually undo the trade with the cast member. Or just trade to another. No reason to give up your real pin for their scrapper and then just eat it.
 
Well, I have seen TONS of people post pictures of scrapper pins on instagram, and other social networking sites....
I think most do not know they have scrappers... Sometimes I will comment on their photos and try to tell them about scrappers...
I don't want to be rude or anything, you know? but sometimes when I do comment...
Some are happy I told them, some delete my comment, some get mad and lash out on me.


Once I commented because a guy wanted to get into pin trading and I informed him about fake/scrapper pins on ebay and he just didn't care. He was like "Oh whatever!!! They are still trade-able!" I suggested he took a look at some of the pin forums, to help him out... recently I saw him posting.. he even took a picture of his scrapper pins he wanted to trade.. No one pointed out that they were scrappers, even though you could clearly tell! :dunno:


Another time someone wanted to trade with me, and they posted a picture of their pins asking if I liked any of them...
89 % of their pins were scrappers. I didn't know what to do! Do they know? Do they not care??
I just said "No thank you." and moved a long...


I have also seen traders who's trades list is completely FILLED with ONLY pins that have scrapper warnings... that scares me, and makes me not want to trade with them.


I would say just to avoid all pin pics requests that are for pins that have a scrapper warning... I would just trade with people on the forums who can show you images of the actual pins.
 
Sound advice - I've got quite a few older HM's I'd like to get - monorails for example - should I avoid those completely as they won't be available from CM at the parks anymore. Do you think there are any trustworthy sellers on ebay?

I think it depends on the trader if he or she is willing to have scrappers in their collections. To me, it is not OK to trade scrappers or fakes. I certainly don't want them in my collection. I know a lot of traders who will keep scrappers in their collection because they believe they will never have the real pin. Most of them have no intention of ever trading that pin, so I don't see anything wrong with that. At the end of the day, we are pretty much on our own when it comes to deciding if a pin is a scrapper or not. When in doubt, there are lots of people here and on another pin forum that will look at pictures of your questionable pins and give you knowledgable opinions on it's validity, which can be helpful. There are some sellers on eBay that I will buy HM pins from, but they are making a judgement about whether it's real or not, just like us, and sometimes they get it wrong. The good sellers will automatically refund your money and tell you to throw the scrapper away. Other sellers will refund your money and pay for return shipping. Others will refund your money, but make you pay return shipping. Still others will fight you on whether the pin is real and then ban you for even questioning them. You get the whole gamut. I keep a list of the sellers that I have had good experiences and usually only buy from them.

Personally, I don't want them either. I've never encountered this issue with any of the other pins I've collected but I figure maybe since I don't know the system that well maybe this is how it's done. I'd at least like to know in advance if I'm getting a scrapper. You have the excitement of actually getting a reply and someone who will trade and then you get the package, open it, and..... well, it's obviously a scrapper and you feel like an idiot for trading a good pin away. If that's how it's done then ok - I'll adapt. Or severely edit my wants to only pins that aren't usually scrapped (3D's seem safe for now).

If it's not how it's done then I'd like to try to help come up with a solution.
 
They're just the silly little monorails like Pin 37222: WDW - Cast Lanyard Series 3 - Monorail (Blue) With Hidden Mickey but I just like them. I've gotten a few scrappers of these already but have them on the wall hanging in hopes to be replaced one day with legit pins.
 
If I were smart like many people on the forum, I would just stay away from the heavily scrapped pins, but I have a weakness for many of the hidden mickeys and the mystery pins, which always seem to be scrapped. Then I spend time, frustration and money chasing down real versions of the pins. It's a bad habit that I need a pintervention for! :drool:
 
It would seem that many people like the HM's. Moderators - what do you think about having a Scrapper Trader section for people to be able to trade their scrappers honestly instead of slipping them into trades for legit pins?
 
I do not think it is acceptable to trade scrapper pins! I would tell them politely and ask for them to mail the pins back. I then would not trade with them again.

For new requests I am very leary of trading for pins that have scrapper alerts. I will only trade if I recognize them from this forum or another. I have traded for a lot of my pins at WDW and can spot the fakes most of the time but if someone questions my trade then I tell them and send pictures if needed. I also don't feel bad if they decide not to trade. I received several hidden mickey older chip and dale pins at WDW last month. They look great but am concerned they may be not real since they are an older pin and I found 3 of the set. Could someone have brought them to trade from their older stash or are they fake? They have no signs of being fake but I will not put them up for trade just in case. Also, I collect chip and dale so want to keep them. I would love to someday see the originals from someone to compare with mine.

I don't think we should adjust our expectations of trades through the mail due to what you have experienced. Keep expecting people to send good pins for good pins!

hmm....a sub-forum dedicated to the trade of stolen (scrappers) or copyright-infringing (counterfeits) pins....seems unwise
 
I think you should tell the trading partner/seller if you think they sent you a bad pin. If they honestly didn't know, they should be happy that you're helping them build or keep a good reputation. My only trade so far has been a pin that I bought at WDW, so I know I was sending my partner an authentic pin. If I sent a pin to someone & didn't know it was a scrapper, I'd be terribly embarrassed & try to correct the situation. I would hope that other sellers & traders would feel the same!
