I'm usually a doll collector, but with my upcoming trip to DW (Sept 7th-13th!) I was going to give pin trading/collecting a try. Since I'm new to this, I thought the best way to start was to buy a pin lot from eBay. I figured I would get a good variety of pins and I can pick out ones i want to collect (mostly alice and villains) and trade the rest. However, since I am NEW at this I'm worried about getting a bunch of pins that are not legit and I will not be able to trade or aquire an actual "real" collection. Any advice on where to start? Is the eBay route a good idea? Anyone know a legit seller?

Thanks for the help!

Hello! Welcome to an addicting hobby - nice to see someone else from NC on here!

If you look at some of the sales forums on here, there are some sales threads with good prices traders ($2-3 pins), that's a good place to start. I'd avoid "pin lots" on ebay - a significant number of those are going to be scrapper/fakes.

Check out the first sticky post in "Pin comparisons" for a good primer on how to ID fakes, scrappers, etc.

Definitely find someone reliable on here who is selling their traders/collection. A lot of people will sell part or all of their collections to scale down or liquidate them. You can usually find good deals that way. Check their feedback and ask if you are not sure of something.

eBay is NOT safe when it comes to "pin lots"! DON'T DO IT! I only buy singles on there for my collection, and even then, I go through a lot of research to make sure the seller is trustworthy. There are simply too many scrappers on there to not be extra careful.

But hey, welcome to pin trading!

:)

Thank you for all of the helpful advice! I will most defiantly stay away from eBay until I become a little more educated on pins. I'll post a wanted thread in the sales forum and see if I can get a few for my son and I to begin trading. If I do become addicted to this and it winds up just like my doll hobby, my hubbs may flip :)
