What is pre production exactly? Came across the term today and I wasn't sure what the actual significance was. Is there a quality difference in the pin or was it just one of the first few?

Pre-production pins are the sample pins made for the merchandise team to decide which version will be produced as the final pin. There are usually a very small amount of these made and they may have variations like different color fills than the final produced pin.

The next pins to be made would be the artist proofs, which are the first round of pins produced as checks for quality. Then the final released pins are made.

It depends if you can find a trader who values them. As a general rule, pre productions pins are more valuable especially if they are one of the color metals that was not used.

It varies from trader to trader. To some, yes, they are. As far as I'm concerned, unless the pin is visibly different from the standard version (fill colors, metal, etc), it's exactly the same as the standard, except it has a slightly different back stamp.
