Thoughts about a Disney Pin Wiki?

Hey y'all! I hope you're having a good holiday season.

I love wikis so I was wondering what everyone would think about collaborating on a wiki just for Disney pins. There may be smaller ones existing, but a cursory search doesn't show me any. I love PinPics and I think it is a wonderful catalog of pins! However, I think the community needs a good hub for in-depth information related to all aspects of pins, from the jargon to the history of pin trading. We could even have information tailored to each pin set and show examples of scrappers or counterfeits in their galleries.

I went ahead and created the wiki just now here.

My hope for the wiki is that it gets information out not only to experienced pin traders, but also to people who are completely new to pins. This might stop people from getting bags of fakes and circulating them, and it also might just make it easy for people to learn more about the hobby.

The wiki is active and online, and anybody is welcome to contribute. It is very very bare right now and needs a framework, but I can start working on it. In addition, if somebody here wants to be a moderator and is in good standing here, I'd be happy to make you one.

This is definitely something I would use. I find pinpics slightly infuriating to navigate, although it is an amazing database which I fear may never be replicated anywhere else. I don't know much about coding or web design, but I would be happy to contribute pin information. I love to organize

I think this is a great idea! If I had more time, I would contribute. Maybe post-graduation or over the summer I can help out. Until then, looking at the official Disney Pin Blogs or the semi-Official Tomart's pin trading catalog books might be a good place to start

Just a suggestion while your endeavor still is in the planning phases: try to figure out exactly what sort of information you want this wiki to contain. That is, decide on how you're going to structure your sections (example: pin trading history from when to when, pin trading presently, etc) and how are you going to define the pin categories and associated vocabulary. Remember you'll want this interesting enough so as not to bore a veteran but simple enough so as not to confuse (but to help) a newbie.

I agree, it seems like a lot of work, but it might get done easier (and you might have an easier time finding volunteers) if you have specific tasks for which people can volunteer instead of just blanket 'please contribute something helpful.'

I'm really glad y'all are receptive to this idea! It certainly is still in the planning phase and will take work, but if we work together it will probably be a lot faster

I think we should have individual pages for pin trading etiquette, the history of pin trading, each pin source, and anything else the user base wants to add a page on (within reason). I think we should also create individual pages for pin series and individual pins. This would be to show more descriptive photos and information for pins and warn of scrappers/counterfeits. I don't know if getting every pin would be do-able, but we could at least try to focus on commonly-traded pins to get the info out there?

I've created a fill-in-the-blanks infobox for pins that's easy to insert into a page. You can add a picture of the pin and info about its PinPics ID, SKU, edition, release date, origin, and price. Other information on the pages can include a more detailed description of the pin, warnings about scrappers/counterfeits, and information about series. Then categories can be added for things like characters, origin, etc. Here is a brief example.

For now, I've created a small glossary for pin vocabulary thanks to the Disney Pins Blog. The items still need definitions, and more can be added or remove.

As for other stuff on the website, we need a background, header icon, favicon, and general prettying-up of the place. I activated Badges, which is like a Wikia achievements system for contributing, and you can actually make custom images for them so that could be another task. I plan on adding links for the DPF, PinPics, and /r/DisneyPinSwap to the front page too.

Of course, all of this is with your input. If you don't like something, we can totally change it, and if you want to add something, we can totally add it. Thoughts so far?

Thank you! I'm gonna try to get a list together of tasks that need to be done and see if I can get volunteers.

Another member from here made a working site a while back. If you were here for the pin pic wars you know about another site that was made and then shut down. Maybe instead of starting new, team up with the site already made as a option other than pin pics. WWW.PinTradingDB.com
