What is actually tradeable in each park?

I am going to California again later this month with a stopover in Tokyo for a few days. I was thinking of picking up a handful of Disney Store Japan pins and was wondering if they would be tradeable in DLR.

While the rules officially state that they are, in practice CMs in Hong Kong and Shanghai are trained to look for a pin trading logo. Therefore, they will gladly accept fakes and scrappers but not legitimate Japanese pins, propins, Adventures by Disney pins, etc. Anyone know what the situation is in Anaheim these days?

Basically it depends on the CM. :/

They're supposed to accept any non-duplicate metal pin with Disney copyright (and most do) but you'll occasionally run into someone who insists on the pin trading logo. But that's fairly rare. Generally they're appreciative of any pin that's different than the usual scrappers they receive. And then there's some that don't care at all.

By the way - do post when you'll be here as I'm sure plenty of locals would be happy to trade with you if they can. Sorry to miss you last time!

Exactly what Jabberwocky said, although honestly I'm not sure you'll find anything but scrappers on our lanyards, so you may not want to give up good pins for that junk. That's not to say there aren't some gems to be found, and it's always a happy day when I can find a foreign pin on a lanyard.

Coming from a former CM, anything with a Disney Copyright logo is trade-able. When I was a CM, I think I traded a bit of everything from current park pins to propin, Cruise Line, CM, and even a Disney Auction...

As someone who is at the park trading weekly, it is mostly the same repetitive fake junk on the lanyards as pretty Omi said. My last three visits I haven't found one real pin worth trading for all day. I'm not going to waste trading good rack pins on card (which is all that's in my bag) for a bunch of fake stuff. But you can sometimes find decent trading with other guests - though there are plenty of those with fake stuff or trying to shark people too.

Are you trying to insinuate that I’m lying to them about the lanyards being flooded with scrappers for my own gain? Because that’s how this reads...
I’m there sometimes twice a week, and all I ever see are scrappers. It’s really a shame because some of my friends enjoy cm trading only, but they haven’t found something worth trading for in a while.

Nope. It's not personal at all.
I'm m just telling them what I have seen and learned in my 8 years of pin collecting. Yes lots of the pins will be bad. But by no means are they all bad. I have even know some CMs that collect and they will do there best to pull scrapers and not allow them to be traded. Obviously this can not be done all the time and the fakes are a real problem. So the best thing you can do is educate yourself as much as possible. Take your time trading and look at what you are interested in trading, if you look and think it is no good, politely turn down the trade and care on. The main key I try to let all pin people know is that pins are a side thing to go along with the park or Disney Magic. Most often you hear or see negative views of things from those that put to much in to those little pins. With that said some of my best pins have come when we were not looking and just happened to fall our way.

One more side note. I know of a lead CM that would hide her lanyard when the scraper guys would go in looking to find out what new pins were available to copy. CMs like that almost always have multiple real pins on their lanyard. They even point you to the good stuff with hints and eye movement when they like you. My son has gotten that treatment a few times. For that matter we have had a CM go to the back to the pin box and pick out the HM he needed to complete a set. Babytrader always got the most love at the parks, but there is magic fir all of us if we go about it in the right way.

@KT07 I don’t believe anyone said they were all bad. Most people were just saying they’re mostly bad generally flooded with scrappers which in my experience has more than not been true.

To your point though on very rare occasion as others have said “there are gems to be found.” You just have to be patient and look for the right clues. We’ve seen “suits” have some stellar pins too, but you have to be on with those CMs. They move fast and they don’t come out often.

Years ago in DLR we found this Museum of Pintiquities LE 300 Donald Sarcophagus Pin on a pin board no less.

I couldn’t believe it. To this day it’s still one of my favorite pins.

We’ve also found some great Cast Lanyard Pins in recent years. Especially during Year of A Million Dreams and the Diamond Celebration.

That's what I'm talking about Jim. Lots of us do put real pins and that is in addition to the real pins that are added by the leads each day. I recall getting five brand new pins from a manager that was just coming on to work. It was cool because I got two and Babytrader got two and my dad traded for the last one. The cm was sure to let us know that only two trades per person but that we could all trade if we wanted. That was the fastest start to a set we ever had.

I'm all about giving advice and agree people should look very good at the pins before trading, but I will never discourage people from trading due to fakes. To me that is all just part of playing in the bloody water with sharks. Sad part of our hobbie. But people like Jim and many others actually leave good pins behind. The good part is he didn't do that at first gate open when the Sharks swim around the most. It's so sad that people have to make money of this hobby. They could do that crap in with baseball cards or something not Disney related. Oh well little rant over. Now get to the parks and let the magic happens on its own. The little shine things are just for side fun. Enjoy your family and friends time first and the pins will just fall in your lap. Or that's how it should be.

Yes that is how it works. And if they know you are a true Disney fan and not just out to make a buck, they will help more. Like I say, they have gone to the back and git Babytrader the missing pin from sets before. It's all about the Disney Magic and how you share and experience it. I love to say I share the magic. Almost every trip I receive some kind of VIP perk and we always grab random guest from the back of lines to enjoy with us. A while a go we tried to take one couple to the front of the line and they thought it was a joke or something. So we took the next people behind them. A CM saw me getting extra people and asked what I was doing. I said spreading the magic. The cm said "oh, ok lets dubble the magic." She than took us from the front of the fast pas line to a side door that let us walk right on to star tours. So we had gone from back of line to the ride doors in less than 5 minutes. My wife said the couple that did not go was sad they didn't trust me and the wife was telling the husband it was his fault. Lol. That's how things go at the house of mouse.

Wish you all the best with your pins but more than that I wish you happy times with friends and family.

I used to love going to DLR as an AP and my wife and I gifting our Fast Passes to guests at the park when we couldn’t make it to a ride due to lines or changing our mind about going on a particular ride. It was really fun to see other guests faces light up and they respond, “you’re giving these Space Mountain fast passes to us?” It goes around too. One time a couple came up to us and said, “we can’t stay for World of Color do you guys want to go?” And they proceeded to hand us their World of Color passes. That was a great day. I was actually so bummed we woke up too late and missed the passes for World of Color that morning so that was a huge blessing. World of Color is my absolute favorite Attraction at Disneyland/DCA.

Sadly since they scan your actual ticket now for FastPasses you can no longer gift them to people.

I also love trading a good pin with a CM and they go... “whoa!” And then they proceed to flip it backwards on their lanyard. Haha. It’s always fun to surprise CMs since half the time or more I think they expect to get something crummy.

Yeah I’ve gotten those and gifted those too. I have many friends who are CMs and a few that are Leads and anytime they were working they’d hand us a few of them.

You can be on a ride over one hundred times without a breakdown and even if it breaks down, there's no guarantee of receiving a physical return pass. I had MaxPass last time when Jungle Cruise broke down so I'm wondering if I could have gotten a physical pass instead of a digital multiple experiences pass.

I know in the early days, Fastpass scalping was a big problem in Shanghai which may be part of the reason Disneyland is going digital.

They're pretty, and likely to be at least a little popular. The last couple of trips I took to Japan, I was lucky to find ANY pins in the Disney Store, so that's great timing for you!

Also, if I have anything you want, I'd love to trade for them, but we'd have to ship to and from Orlando/LA.

HAHA. I'm still at a stage where I prefer to trade face to face and have never sent pins out by mail but there's a first time for everything! I'll keep an eye out for those pins.

Every Disney store seems to have slightly different stock but the one in Shibuya tends to have the most pins. They can be hard to find though because the stores are organized by theme so there aren't specific pin sections. In February, I got a snow white 4 pin boxed set off the lowest shelf that would have been really easy to miss if you weren't looking closely. Loads of people were admiring this set at the pin trading fun night in Hong Kong but it was only 1300 yen (less than 12 USD) at the sale price.

Disney Store Japan pins would not trade, as most have metal backs and usually there are not any pins for sale. But you can get tradable pins at the park store.

I don’t think so. I’ve traded old Disney channel pins, most of the time they have board so the backs aren’t even on them, you keep your back.

That’s a good point they are on boards .... usually. But anyways my experience has been if you go to a Disney store Japan there will not be any pins for sale. The park store usually has one seasonal for each park. Now one is summer other is Pirates. And they have a small rack near one register that has open pins. Now mostly attraction pins.
