UGH. Ok, no offense, Snow collectors, but this is so unfair. You have 3 marquees now!!! Meanwhile, I'm still over here waiting for the day they'll finally get around to Hunchback of Notre Dame... sure, they can squander their enamel on marquees for instantly forgotten flops like Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Wild Hogs, and freakin' Gnomeo & Juliet, but I can't get one measly Hunchback pin???
There is a sequel coming out, this is a very real possibility....All right, everyone. Brace yourselves for an avalanche of Gnomeo & Juliet pins.
I was just saying elsewhere Frollo gets very little villain love and he is one of the most realistic and problematic villains there is. Plus, he’s got one of the best villain songs!UGH. Gnomeo and Juliet isn't a rip off it's a retelling. If anyone is butt hurt maybe they should go be butt hurt over idk....snow white, sleeping beauty, Cinderella, frozen, princess and the frog, beauty and the beast, little mermaid, any of the Alice in wonderland and movies, Aladdin, and omg I mean they stole Pocahontas' history right out of 5he history books! For what it's worth, there are no "Lilo & Stitch" marquees either. Meega naala kristaa!
While I didn't care for the first Burton "AiW" movie, I really liked "Through the Looking Glass". It had a good theme about time not being our enemy.
Now, I'm preparing myself for a major flame war here, but...
"Gnomeo & Juliet" = rip off of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" and that's bad, but "Lion King" = rip off of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and that's OK???
Let the flames commence!
Oh pffftttt. I get why y'all don't like it, but I find variations on the theme of Alice to be interesting. BF has actually become a baby Alice scholar, and he made the observation that Burton's Alice (the character, I mean) is probably the closest in spirit to Lewis Carroll's original. I tend to agree with him. People have done enough weird sh*t with the character in the past 150 years (including icky stuff) that Burton's slightly creepy, mad/genius interpretation of the whole thing does NOT offend me.

Let's be real, no history books were used for the making of Pocahontas...
GUUUURL. Do not even get me started on how underrated Frollo is. We would be here all day. But yeah, he is totally the most realistic villain ever, which makes him so much more disturbing. And Hellfire is THE villain jam.
Lol oh God, now I'm gonna have Gnomeo & Juliet fans AND Poca fans coming for me... seriously guys, don't be offended, you can like whatever you like! I'm not judging you. (Ok, I'm judging you a little... I'm a film student, what do you want from me?? Of course I'm snobby about movies.) I like plenty of trash too though. No shame. Own your trash, girlfriends. More power to you. <3
Plus I think Lion King was really original for its time and took a lot of risks
Oh I was being way more sarcastic lolLet's be real, no history books were used for the making of Pocahontas...

(Although I still think Hunchback is eleventy jillion times better than Gnomeo & Juliet and is infinitely more deserving of a marquee, and I will fight to the death anyone who disagrees. Just sayin'. Also, we don't have any Hunch PTN's either. Again, just sayin'.)
We would need to sit down at at Epcot, get some Grand Mariner slushees by France and spend all day on him! He’s the personification of some serious Catholic Guilt.
Also HoND related, I’ve been thinking about reading the actual novel though it is quite different.
Gratuitous Frollo love:

I love me some completely fictional Pocahontas! I own that trash! Also love the sound track. Fight me. ;-)
Poca’s tiny pin board is on my wall while Aurora’s huge one sits on the floor by the end of my bed, since I have to move wall decorations to even think about getting it up!

Except for the part where it may have been heavily inspired by Kimba, the White Lion.
I'm not saying that it was, but I am saying:
A.) It wouldn't be the first time someone's tried to rip off anime/manga and pass it off as their own idea in the West
B.) Unconscious stealing is a thing that happens- it could have been deep in their memories when they were coming up with the idea.
C.) Several people on the film remember and referenced Kimba, even if it wasn't the "inspiration" for the movie
Counterpoint: I also know that coincidences and parallel thinking happens to writers and artists all the time. I've had it happen to me...had an idea, and boom, someone else beat me to it. So I don't approve of just assuming it's ripped off because they're similar. That said, it's important to investigate claims of plagiarism, always.
But even if it wasn't original in concept or design, it was still a great movie. Kids that grew up with it are definitely making it popular again...
And I have no opinion on Gnomeo & Juliet...haven't seen it.
Anastasia is one of my all time favorite movies. Have you heard about the Anastasia musical? The backdrop of the musical is the Russian Revolution (only slightly less historically inaccurate than the movie).Honey, you're talking to someone who owns a replica of Anastasia's "Together in Paris" necklace and wears it every damn day... zero judgment here. That movie is the most historically inaccurate thing ever and is downright offensive in its royal apologist whitewashing of the Russian revolution and it is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THING EVER OMG. I think it's totally fine to enjoy problematic media as long as you're honest about the problematic elements, ya know?
