I have been thinking about purchasing a few of these new and thought I had heard talk at one point about subscriptions being sold for that calendar years releases. Does anyone have any info about ACME, how it works and if such a thing is possible?

With no new DA pins being produced, these seem to have a similar sense of whimsy and story telling in a single image that really appeals to me. Still not sold on the idea of collecting them, but it has been a conversation with my daughter ...

Thanks for the help --

Basically with a subscription, you have to commit to buying ALL the pins released that month (and are billed accordingly). The release is announced for the month and then, when they are ready to ship (4-6 months later), you get an invoice.

Email from Hot Art / ACME that I received today (I saw a similar post yesterday on Facebook). I must have subscribed for updates since I do get emails with their monthly releases.

FYI: They are also cutting down on monthly pins (2 pins instead of 4 pins). Golden Magic pins (the circular pins) are still available in a subscription.

Dear valued members,

We are continuously asked to give our thoughts to the price of the ACME LE 100 pins. Are they too high and unreasonably priced? Here is what we like to point out:

  1. The ACME Art Pins are officially licensed. They are the real deal. Every aspect of the production goes through a rigorous vetting by the Disney company to their exact standards of color, quality material and on model. Art and pins have to travel the globe up to five times if everything goes well and more if changes are required. It is a costly and time-consuming process. You have the Disney guarantee to the quantity, quality and accuracy on model.
  2. ACME Art pins are made by the top official factory in the world with the finest materials. This factory is the only ones who can do many of the unique techniques ACME ask for. Some are so challenging only their managers can work on them, leading to long finish times for production and higher costs.
  3. ACME's team of world-class artists are paid for the work done. Easy to absorb what the price point of limited-edition Art but substantial for the pens at such a small price in comparison.
  4. A substantial licensing fee is paid for each and every pin.
  5. Incredible levels of detail. Some of these pins have up to 99 screens on them as well as multiple plains and materials. Never compromising the interpretation of the art for cost.
  6. A lithograph is included as a bonus that in the art community has a retail value of at least $50 in and of itself. Inclusion was a requirement of the license.
  7. Beautiful real wood packaging worthy of these groundbreaking pins.

When you add it all up the ACME pricing is amazing. No one else has been trusted to make official limited edition pins outside of Acme. It is a testament to their love of all things Disney, pins themselves and their ability to bring their groundbreaking premium quality to this hobby.

If you look at this from the pin side of things, the pricing is very fair. While we have not seen a limited-edition of 100 in a super jumbo size pin direct from Disney in a while, we can compare the price of a recent large 20th anniversary DSSH Toy Story pin in a limited edition size of 150. Retail price was $179. That is WITHOUT the extra artist and licensing fees paid by ACME, as well as the increased fees simply because they are not Disney and cannot achieve the type of discounts such a large company can.

From the Art side of things, these pins are an absolute steal in comparison to anything other Art collectible with such a small Limited edition size such as a giclee, and a giclee costs much less to make than a pin. They have had great crossover appeal.

We know directly that money was lost on a few of these first LE 100 designs for the sake of maintaining the integrity of the artists vision. We hope you see the incredible value of these official pins and that they are made for the love of the product and art more than the profitability. You will most likely never see OFFICIAL beautiful large pins of such small edition sizes again. Only your recognition of their value and continued support will let ACME know they are valued and appreciated.

Thank you and keep the questions coming to info@hotart.hk.

I got the same email ... Did not know they were cutting back to two pins. Do you know now when this will start? I assume the overall price will go down per month too ...

I think acme is getting slammed for the silly prices. And they should. I understand it takes a lot to make some of those but when you do some that are $175, and then some that are $15, people are going to get antsy. XD

Having never seen on in person ... Ever, I am curious to hold, see and compare them to not only their 15$ pins but to original DA pins, current releases etc. Need to see what all the fuss is about and why/if I should continue my subscription

I feel like they aren't THAT good tbh. :/ I trade for a Marie Music for my sister a while ago, and I wasn't all that impressed. Then again, if they made a Jumbo Lion King one that looked cool I might have a different opinion. XD

Aren't they releasing a lion king one?

A lot of the pin cost has to go to the packaging, no? And then the cost to ship that? The velvet-lined fancy wooden boxes along with the litho.

Tbh I'd prefer a smaller pin on a simple card backer. The pins are so enormous and heavy it can make them a bit awkward to display on a board. I collect Dug and I like to display all my Dug pins together and its *so* big and heavy my sister and I have actually had discussions on whether they "count" as official Disney pins. :)

I have all 4 Rapunzel Jumbos that have been released along with the LE250 circle pin and I do love them but I got them from re-sellers.
A couple were at cost, one was below cost and one was above cost.

I display them on lanyards and one on a pin board, they are HUGE but definitely gorgeous. I don't regret buying them but would prefer a lower price XD I don't think the box and litho is really necessary as they just live under my bed in a storage box now.

Yeah, I wish I liked it. There's really just too much going on in that pin design for me. :/

I agree with that one :/
Luckily I've liked all the Rapunzel ones. Some of the artwork chosen has been questionable. Plus the ones that have the fab 5 are hard to sell so people aren't even getting retail for them.

I did confirm in an email that the monthly number of pins will go from 4 to 2 with the price for existing subscribers will remain at $125 per pin (plus shipping). They are going to ask upwards of $200 each for those buying outside of the subscription holders. What was also interesting is that they are not going to be accepting any new subscriptions, I guess counting on people in Shanghai and Japan buying them upon release and/or people cuing in a virtual line, online... Those with current subscriptions will be able to maintain them until they decide to give it up... Their stated goal ... at least in the email to me, was to be more timely with releases and to not get behind with two being a more manageable release number.

Personally, I like what I see online (especially those Rapunzel pics! - Thanks!) and am anxious to get my first set. As these pins will be part of the collection my daughter and I build together, I think they will be worth it. With her recently declaring that Beauty and the Beast is her new favorite, I am very much looking forward to the Belle Pin I have seen concept art for recently :) For me, this is why we collect pins and I hope the quality matches the images and is a sustainable model. 225$ every month or every other month just seems psychologically like less of a hit that $533 :)

Congrats on getting the subscription! If they make the Ariel "nouveau" pin and you don't want it, I'll gladly take it off your hands ;P.

For myself, the one pin I wanted has lost its appeal it once held over me. I'd still like to have it one day, but it's not a priority. I think they're all pretty, but for "art" they lack the soul of the artist.

There is a guy on FB from riverside, CA selling a few acme LE100 pins for $125 shipped. Had that pin above ^^, mickey/minnie, ratatouille, sleeping beauty, and a few others.

So it doesn't look like a lot of them sell well at all.

I'll read the post again, but I thought I remembered seeing it posted that they were stopping the platinum releases? I think once those came out (and increasing the LE100 TO 200), people got unhappy quickly.

In my honest opinion, I don't see ACME pins to be 100% Disney. I feel its not considered Authentic Disney, even with the licensing and all that. ACME doesn't only do business with Disney, but with other large companies like Comcast. and that's where I feel cheated on. Its just like Hot Topic releasing pins of Disney Characters, they're licensed, but they don't have that Authentic Disney factor to it. Which makes those pins feel worthless. I feel ACME is more like over done fantasy pins. Shoot we cant even wear them or take them to the parks to trade. or can we? Either way, I find it very hard to accept as a true Disney pin. Also in regards of the price, the reason its hard to justify, when someone buys it for $125, to make it worth the purchase, they need to make a profit from it. and at that point the pin is beyond what people are willing to pay. Even with the argument ACME gives on how DSF sells Premier pins for $150, they failed to notice, how difficult it was for DSF to even sell out of those. In fact DSF ended up putting them in "Jumbo" pin games to win for free.

I never seen an ACME pin before in real life so wonder how the quality holds up. Though the price tag seems to be way to high for me, even if it was a design I loved, I don't think I am even willing to pay more than $25 for a pin, even a grail pin.

Now I am curious about whether the ACME pins could pass the trade test, it would be an expensive trade, but I am curious to see what comes of an attempted trade.

I don't know about trading in the park, but I did see several people trading the ACME pins at the Pixar pin event last September. Then again, I also saw lots of people trading full-out fantasy pins, and none of the CM stopped them...

ACME pins came today!! NOW I know what all the fuss is about! These are BIG, bold, Sooo detailed and most of all beautiful! LOVE the Snow pin! It really is gorgeous!

Cheshire has been traded, but the 3D Incredibles pin is available ...
